Hanley shares a lot more similarities with Manny than Ortiz. If they could give his contract away, they would.
Give away? That is an odd way of describing the offloading of a $70 million liability backed with a junk asset. There is nothing gift - like about that. Lol!

And yet the Sox jumped on signing him when no one else seemed to be interested in him.

Oh but I understand the reasoning behind it!!!!

Yes, Larry liked him.

Great news for the Red Sox, Hanley will play WinterBall. (@Enrique_Rojas1)

So he will either learn to play 1B, or get hurt and miss the season..... Either way, the Sox benefit.... ;)

I read somewhere that Price => Cubs is looking less likely. Let me see if I can find it....

Read today that Price and his agent told the Jays that they were far and away his top choice of teams he'd like to sign with.

I still think the Sox are going to have to outbid other teams by a fair amount in order to get Price to come to Boston.

I think that there might be even better options than Hanley after next season. He might wind up being the one. If he is with Boston this year, it will be a big year for him. If he continues to be prone to injury, and can't get it done daily, I think that they will cut bait with him. I'm hoping that he comes out fast in the spring and proves to be what many think he has been and can be. I'm skeptical by nature.

Being a DH after this year should help to keep Hanley healthier. If he's with the team this year, I think he will be getting a fair number of ABs in the DH role.

It's often difficult to understand the reasoning behind something you disagree with, but because you disagree with it doesn't mean that the rationale doesn't exist.

I completely understand the rationale behind the Kimbrel trade, and the rationale behind Dombrowski being so aggressive with that trade, even though I disagree with it.

Good for Hanley. All reports on him so far this offseaon have been good.

I am sure they say that to all the teams! I still think that the Cubbies have the inside track because of Maddon. But money will talk in the end.

I really hope Dombrowski doesn't get burned this off-season. The scrutiny on his moves is enormous. Maybe it was the case in Detroit too, but I doubt it was to this degree. I feel like part of the secretiveness that Theo and then Ben developed was because they got burned when their intentions were known. I really like that he shares more or less what his plans are, but I hope he can combine that with pulling off quality moves. Seems like a lot is riding on them landing Price, Greinke or Cueto. I think Zimmerman might be one step below. Not that it matters, but fans will question whether he's an "ace".

It can't be a good thing to know that the Sox are desperate to land a pitcher and that they don't see much hope via trade.

I think it's down to the Cubs and us. I've heard the Cards thrown in there a fair amount also. I think we have a good shot though. He knows the AL hitters so well I think he would choose us over the Cubs of the money is near the same.

Why? Chicago is a great young team on the verge of making history. He'd be a hero if he helped them win the WS. Meanwhile Boston (the team and the city) haven't been especially nice for Price. Chicago is a great city. Boston is a great city. Both great ballparks. I'm not so sure that he'd want to go to Boston at all.

Ya maybe your right. But I hope your wrong ha..I'm just hoping he once again chooses the AL. As mentioned previously, the thought of him wanting to possibly reunite with Maddon does make me nervous though.

Nothing to be nervous about. Don't have your heart set on him and you won't be disappointed.

He's our only shot at an ace. Grienke couldn't handle the Boston fans and media and Cueto and Zimmerman aren't true aces imo.

Right, because the LA media and culture are so much more easier to handle than Boston.

Also, Cueto's last five seasons (average): 179 IP, 2.87 ERA, 138 ERA+, 1.11 WHIP. He's given ace production, but has had trouble staying healthy.

I'm all for Price, but Cueto (if his elbow is sound) and Greinke are pretty good fallback plans.

I'd have no qualms about Greinke. I'm a little less sold on Cueto.

Honestly, I just think with his anxiety issues that it might mess with him more in Boston. I think Boston fans/ media are a little different than L.A.'s. I spent 10 years out there back when I was in the marines and while it is a little similar, I don't think it's as bad. Look at what Ted Williams went through. And he's a legend!

Money will talk, it's just a matter of how much the Sox are willng to outbid some of the other teams by. I think you and I are in agreement that all offers being fairly equal, Price is not choosing Boston.

I understand liking a GM that is forthcoming about his offseason intentions, but I think it's in his best interest not to be so open about it. As you said, it can't be a good thing for other teams and agents to know what Dombrowski is trying to do.

Someone reported yesterday that Dombrowski is "all in" on Price and that he thought the Sox would be the high bidder. I want Price, but I hope Dombrowski doesn't get stupid with his offer. The contract that he is going to get already makes me shudder, without Dombrowski trying to outbid the other teams on top of it.

I have never lived in LA, but from what I understand, no place is as frenzied and no team's players are under as much scrutiny as they are in NY or Boston. The anxiety may or may not be an issue, but it is something to take into considertion when handing out that much money. Not to mention the draft pick that he will cost.

Somebody also brought up the very valid point that in LA, Greinke was not expected to be THE GUY. He had Kershaw to take some of that pressure off. If he came here, he would be expected to be THE GUY.

So he might choke?

It isn't like it's some national secret. Dombrowski has made it a point to have a headliner atop his rotations. He has had one everywhere he has been. Typically a large, high velocity starter capable of eating innings. Price was that guy starting off the year. He might be that guy again. The sox have a gigantic hole in the top 2 spots in the rotation. You could drive a bus through the hole. You have to take care of 1 before you can take care of #2.
