It's not a solution if Ben still makes the calls.

It can be. He doesn't make the calls in a vacuum. He makes the calls based on input he gets from a team of talent evaluators.

Maybe they should compartmentalize and put Dipoto in charge of sprucing up our putrid bullpen for next year.

From what I've read, one of Dipoto's main tasks is to re-evaluate and re-assess the talent the team already has, mostly in the minors, to help determine exactly what we have and who should be used in trades.

Your take on WAR is uninformed and silly. I will bet money you don't actually understand why its measurement varies between websites. You can't call it terrible if you don't really understand it. Not that it doesn't have its flaws mind you.

What happened with the "bet money" blasphemy?

You do not like to bet money to prove that you are right.... right?

Every single stat has to be taken with a grain of salt, and while I like them, they are not la panacea.

In the end they need interpretation of what they tell you between the lines for a certain situation or analysis.

How 'bout those Cubs? :)

How 'bout that Jon Lester? :(

I'm pulling for Lester, Theo, and the Cubs. It's too bad Maddon has to be a part of that team.

He'll never bet you. No one should ever bet with you. You are too good at it! LOL!

He's the man Theo wanted though. Looks like another good move to me.

The FO and Ben are responsible enough to acknowledge that what they have done the past 2 years has not worked. Rather than the continual bashing, give them some credit for bringing in a fresh pair of eyes to help them fix the mess that the team is in.

I find it funny since Theo had guys like this around all the time. This not some new MO relative to the last decade plus. Self scouting is an important gig too, and it helps to bring in somebody from the outside to do that.

DiPoto will be fine in the limited gig. He has a solid reputation, and is not in a position where someone is telling him "do the analysis, just don't ask our staff to use it"

Maddon became the natural choice once the brass had all these kiddos on their way. Francona, Showalter, Maddon - somebody like that is available, go get em.

It does look like a good move. I am not denying my personal bias against Maddon in that previous statement. I cannot stand the guy.

There are some who are not going to be happy until Ben is gone, which is fine. I can understand that feeling with the way the team has played 3 of the last 4 years. However, I think it is making some people a little closed minded in terms of moves like bringing in Dipoto. It may or may not help, but at least give it a chance, and at least acknowledge that the FO is trying to improve their talent evaluation.

At least we don't have too see his mug every time we play the Rays now. :)

This clown is a mass of contradictions.

He refused to bet regarding Porcello, apparently because he hates me haha although he was pretty sure that he was going to be a 3.5 ERA pitcher or something, in what planet?

He made a storm of s*** regarding bets, remember? (still do not know why) and now, somehow he is willing to bet just because he "thinks" (pretty sure, actually) that jd does not understand WAR. As always no one can think different, otherwise he uses his typical obtuse cliches "do not make sense" "bitching/whine" "reading comp" "you do not understand" etc, while starting s*** up.

Quoting Hornsby "That's just the way it is"

He'll bet money on something that can't be established with certainty so he can claim victory regardless of the outcome and not pay. Betting money on what someone thinks ... ? Does Vegas have any betting lines on things like that? LOL!!

...and If you add 2012, it speaks volumes of how bad the plan has been in recent years.

We need to change the culture of losing. We need to blow the entire FO otherwise this hardly is going to change.

I definitely see the frustration - although 2012 was so smashed to smithereens by health issues that inclusion among 2014 and 2015 is a little unfair.

It's pretty obvious Ben will be back for 2016. The big question now is what happens with the manager position.

I wouldn't be surprised if Farrell survives. But he shouldn't. There are a lot of viable candidates - as simple as Lovullo to a wider search.

Injuries are part of the game, sk. Also if you take 2010 and 2011 as well you have 5 years of misery. Five!. It makes 2013 more and more fluke than anything else.... sorry but I can not see it in other way, the plan in recent years has plenty flaws.

I insist, the strategy hence the culture has to change. This franchise has arguably the best fan base in baseball and we deserve better than this crap.

I'm not a huge Farrell fan by any means but it is just another attempt to lay blame at someone's feet. He is the easy target but if he goes, his coaching staff should go with him. I get the fact that people are frustrated as well. Regardless of what the stats say - regardless of what the scouts said, the players brought in are not as good as everyone thought that they would be. I think that anyone could have reasonable expectations for professional athletes based on past performance no matter who the head coach is.

The line "I'd bet money on it" or some variation of that is just a figure of speech to convey confidence in one's opinion, not to be taken literally. How often do people nonchalantly say "I'd bet my paycheck on it"? I'd bet that very few of them would actually do it. But you already knew that.

Well, I bet money that I used it in that way sometimes

... and U? still made a s*** storm about it.

It sounds like Farrell will be back as well. I do question this coaching staff's ability to properly "coach" these players, but I have no proof that this is where the problem lies. I would not be unhappy if he were fired, but I also would not be unhappy if he were given the chance to fix this mess next season, along with Ben.

I really think that the FO needs to be insistent on some of these players putting in some extra work this offseason, either with conditioning (Panda) or working on drills (Hanley). I know they can't force it, but they can be very adamant about it.

Of course he can. He's the last person that needs my help.

But I can defend him, just as you can defend iortiz in a discussion that did not involve you.

2011 was a collapse. 2010 was one of the more proud seasons unless you are unreasonable - another season where injuries decimated them and they still managed 89 wins and the last two weeks of the season with something to play for. "Injuries are part of the game" is a cute idea except that in 2012 all of their good players were hurt for long stretches - no team can recover from that. You are veering awfully close to the "29 teams have had disgraceful seasons" each year mentality, which makes it hard for sports to do much of anything other than disappoint.

I am not defending iortiz. He can state his own case. I am making my own comment about U.N.
