Contract reportedly contains opt-out and no-trade. Monster money and control over his future. Couldn't be better for him.

I would have told them to get f***ed if it didnt after what happened to Jose Reyes et al.

The Stanton contract is now a reality.

The Blue Jays signed Russell Martin for 5 years/82 million.

The Braves traded Jason Heyward to the Cards for Shelby Miller.

Busy day.

The Stanton deal is gonna be a good 6-7 year deal for the Marlins and he is gone, or it will be the biggest albatross ever.

That is just stupid money for Russel Martin. Typical Toronto. Decide to spend money, but spend it foolishly.

That is an interesting trade that came absolutely out of nowhere wow.

The Stanton deal is just plain nuts. I don't get it at all, the Marlins never pay and now they decide to pony up the most expensive contract in history. The money and the years are crazy. Look at A-Rod!

Not sure I understand the Heyward trade for the Cardinals since he's a FA after next season - unless they feel sure they can sign him to an extension. Miller might be overrated but he's still cost controlled for a few seasons. I guess the Cardinals have the pitching depth to spare though.

gojohn, I think the Marlins are fairly confident in him option out after year 5. As long as Stanton is still good, he will opt out after year 5. They assumed all the risk here, because if he has a serious decline, they'll be completely f***ed. I assume they are going to be insuring this policy for injury.

I think the Cardinals saw they made the NLCS with their second best pitcher on the shelf and with Miller pretty much a mop up guy. They always seem to covet the defensive players and Heyward was arguably the best defensive OFer in the game last yr. Hitters thrive outside Hot-lanta and pitchers blossom with the Braves. This might be one of those good for both kind of moves

Heyman, the Boras mouthpiece, says the Yankees are looking at Scherzer. I don't believe it for a second.

I think he'd be a great signing, considering the lack of wear on his arm, he didn't reach 1,230 innings until he was 29, compared to 26 for Sabathia, and 24 by Tanaka.

Among the top free-agent pitchers, Scherzer has thrown by far the fewest pitches, with 20,954, to 26,321 for Lester, and 29,461 for Shields.

He also has the most violent mechanics of the group you mentioned. Have you actually watched him pitch? Yes he's good but his arm is likely to wind up 10 rows back of home plate eventually. He is one of the very few top P around the league I would want absolutely no part of based on delivery/motion. I'd throw up in my mouth is the Sox signed him. I have a couple Tigers fans friends and they were dancing around the dugout when news came out he turned down that big offer from Detroit. They wanted no part of him and felt they had been lucky to get out what they had of him. I'd love for the Yanks to give him a fat 7 year deal lol

I think this is Boras just trying to drum up business by getting NY's name involved. A few stories have mentioned the odd quietness surrounding Scherzer's market. Boras falling flat on his face would be even better than NY signing Scherzer. But Boras usually finds some owner desperate enough to give him what he wants.

Good luck insuring a 13 year contract for $325 mil. The last I heard - and this was a long time ago and about pitchers - teams couldn't get insurance past a certain number of years. Maybe that's changed.

Can we instead talk about why is this contract thirteen years? Where was the need? Was he really going to get ten elsewhere? Maybe, but he isn't even a FA yet. Backloading the deal is stupid if he doesn't opt out, they are gonna be f***ed. I look and look and still can't see the benefit in this contract for the Marlins (knowing their history as far as spending goes).

He is 25 years old and already has 150 home runs. I'm not big on long contracts, but if you're getting a top player through ages 25-32, sometimes you just have to bite the last few years. It also has an opt-out option, which I am betting the Marlins believe he will use.

Again, I'm framing this in the context of the Marlins who insisted on no no-trade clauses to Beurhle and Reyes and dumped them one year later. What the hell changed for them to offer this? I understand wanting to keep a guy, and I know he's a good player. But still...

He's not a good player. He is a great young player.

Yup. Probably they finally will be contenders putting good teams around Stanton and Fernandez in the coming years.

Not if he shits the bed and doesn't do that great. He'll just stay with the team then and milk the contract

That will be for the next owner to worry about lol

325 million dollar deal? Are you kidding me?

ikr?

he was asked if he is embarrassed to make more in a day than a lot of Americans make in a year, which is kinda unfair to single him out in the embarrassment of riches that is American major professional sports, but sometimes you have to wonder at the economics of it all. Is it one giant bubble that is unsustainable? Doesn't seem to be so far....

I actually don't think he will opt out after seeing the content of the deal. He's getting $10 mil per year for the next 3 yrs and an average of $18 mil a yr through year 6, which is the last yr before the opt out. The last 7 seasons are worth a whopping $217 million, or $31 mil a year. There would need to be a massive change in MLB finances for a 31 yr old to opt out of a 7 yr $217 mil deal.

Not necessarily. Pujols and Cano got $240 million. It all depends on his numbers and whether salaries ever do stabilize or if they climb some more. Right now the money is flowing in.

Cano played a premium position and Pujols was the best player in the game for a decade before he was signed. Stanton may be that in 6 yrs and if so, he opts out. But he would need to be a top 3 player in the game to opt out. That's massive money

Arguably, he is right now, if 2014 and projections are to be believed.

Those guys were also 31, 32. Stanton's contract is huge because he's a top player, and the team is getting prime years from him, instead of over 30 years.

Reports saying Kyle Seager and Mariners closing in on 7/100M extension.

LOL, $100mil for Kyle Seager, GTFO. Is this what it's come to now? This blatant overpaying is turning me away from baseball, and making me less inclined to spend money on it.
