Relapse involving cocaine, apparently. Some disagreement on whether he'll be treated as a first time offender as his suspension was before he was on MLB roster.

I can't exactly cast the first stone - I know of the power of addiction, having worked in the field of addiction treatment. Also, given how he fell off the charts at the plate the last couple of seasons, it's not entirely surprising to hear he relapsed. Just very disappointing.

We should all be a little sympathetic to the guy. Addiction is a terrible thing and you're only one drink or one snort from going back to dependence. I also feel sorry for his wife and kids who are also suffering at this relapse by their breadwinner. A little compassion might be in order from where I sit, and be thankful none of us are drug or alcohol dependent.

Well said Fred.

Are we talking about the same Rex Barney, the pitcher who threw as if the plate were high and inside, but when he had his control could be a devastating pitcher?

That must be going way back, Fred but apparently that's the guy. I just remember him as the Orioles PA announcer.

Then that's the guy. I knew he was associated with the Baltimore Orioles in some way. The guy was a wild man but on occasion could really pitch a gem when he had his control. On September 9, 1948 he pitched a no hitter at the Polo Grounds in a 2-0 Brooklyn victory over the Giants. Unfortunately he never could gain consistency and was out of baseball by 1951 or 52.

A little compassion and a lot of punishment for these undermining performance 'de-hancing' drugs. The added stress from the punishment might even encourage further drug use, subsequent feelings of guilt and shame to which more of these drugs could assuage, further reinforcing their use and driving a vicious cycle. At least we know every hit and homer he gets came despite the drugs, not because of them. How refreshing!

Good post. Nice touch of irony there.

Great to see pitching today this kid Urias (18 YO) from Huiguerita, Sinaloa, Mex.; a really great prospect of LAD; some are saying that he is the next Kershaw. Happy for him because he has a great story of life behind since his tumor in his left eye and comes from a very very poor family. He has a FB of 98 mph with a very good command. Some are saying that he could make his debut next season, if so not sure how many pitchers have made a debut at that age. Hopefully he makes his dream come true, the kid deserves it. Edited by iortiz

Fred, probably you have heard more rumors about this kid in LA.

The kid lefthander apparently has a howitzer for a pitching arm and can heave it at time over 100mph and his curve isn't at all for an 18 year old. He pitched two days ago I believe and had a little trouble with is control but when in the zone was pretty effective. The Dodgers say they are going to bring him along slowly and they are right about that because they do seem to have a pretty good and experienced rotation, but frankly I'm already tired of reading, hearing and watching the Dodgers out here, and that now is going for the Angels. I don't MLB Red Sox games until the regular season and I wish there was some way I could get them now or at least listen to them on the radio.

Yu Darvish To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

Not good news for the Yankees, obviously. This morning I read ( ESPN Boston ) that he was pitching side sessions or something and things were going well.

Tubbie's knees are shot from what I have read. He needs all types of pre-game and post game therapy and attention. But again, I read that he is throwing well.

The Yankees rotation could have been the best in the division. Now things don't look so great.

I wonder if NY will make a play for Hamels?

Huh? Are you confusing Yu Darvish with Tanaka?

Tanaka has actually been pitching well and feeling good so far. I'm not sure that he'll make it through the whole season, but so far that has to be encouraging for the bad guys. CC claims he's healthy, and that his knee brace is more for peace of mind than anything else. If they stay healthy, the Yankees rotation can be scary good. We just have to hope that their offense is another dud like it was last year.

Despite the Yankees saying that their not in on Hamels, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up getting him. :(

Ervin Santana, take a seat for 80 games, son.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

And I was just reading that the Twins gave up a draft pick to sign him.

No, you have serious concerns about trying to salvage some of the huge amount of money you overpaid him with. How's that contract working out for ya?

It was a dumb investment. It had bad written all over it. I say live by the sword, die by the sword. f*** them. If the Sox do this crap I say f*** them too.
