I think you have many good points here Fred. The biggest of all being the playing time in the outfield. I think teams need to see Craig and Vic before any team would make a trade for either. I would rather keep Craig than Vic. If Craig is healthy he has more power and controlled longer and Vic has chosen to only be a RHH which I think hurts his value. Holt and Nava will be on the bench for lefty bats for matchups and you can play them pretty much everywhere. Then Hanigan will have a spot as the back up catcher.

So one question I have is what kind of range does Castillo have in CF? Will he have Mike Trout range and have similar stats? Maybe not as much power but still be classified as a 5 tool player. If not then you will have to have a guy in RF to cover a lot of ground. So alot of pressure will be on Castillo if he has hanley in left and Nava or Craig in right. I honestly don't think Betts has the arm for right field. So does Castillo have good enough arm for RF ? Then Betts would play CF. Injuries do happen and may sort everything out, but if all are healthy atleast one has to be moved.

How did you arrive at the idea that Castillo is five tool?

Total news to me.

There are some legitimate concerns about Pedroia's decline and health, but trading Pedroia right now would be a PR nightmare. As you said, Pedroia is the heart and soul of this team. After losing out on Lester, another home grown player, the last thing the Sox want to do is trade Pedroia.

Besides, Pedroia is on a mission to once again prove his doubters wrong. You tell Pedroia that he is in decline, he will do everything he can to show you that he's not.

No disputing that Pedroia is the hart and soul of the team. But I think that trading him for a big arm would be justified and eventually understood and probably embraced by most fans if the arm panned out and the Sox flourished.

I disagree that Pedroia is in decline. His numbers are down over the past three years, true. I think that two years with successive hand injuries has diminished his ability to drive the ball. I hope that with good health this spring that he will perform closer to the previous norms.

If the big arm panned out and the Sox flourished, then yes, the fans would eventually come to embrace the move. I still think it would be a PR nightmare for a while though. It's a move I just can't see happening. Pedroia means too much to the Sox and their fans.

I don't necessarily think Pedroia is in decline either. Just that the possibility is a valid concern. At this point it's hard to know how much injuries played a part. I wouldn't bet against him. Regardless, his defense will be much needed this season.

There is something pretty awful about trading a player who took a gigantic paycut to play for you.

He's a franchise player, and that means things that transcend past pure ability.

Also, the average tenure of Red Sox players is 2-3 years, and I am surprised that it hasn't become a problem for attendance.

I guess the good news is that I know I for one haven't seen anything viable in print that has even suggested that Pedroia might be traded for anybody. Once again all conjecture and rumor. A cute one - got us all talking. It's a lomg winter isn't it. The bait was thrown out there and it got some hits quickly though didn't it.

This team is as much a contender as any other team in the division. More so than most.

You may very well be right with this assumption. On paper I do think that they look much improved but for me I choose to reserve judgement. I hope it all works out but there are just too many ifs and buts out there. American League East looking weak will help. Obviously third base has been taken care of and the acquisition of Porcello is a real upgrade but after that I think we just cheer them on and hope that they perform like many people think that they can.

Pedroia's contract is not a pay cut.

His new contract was not a pay cut, but at $14.17 million AAV, it was definitely a below-market contract.

Talk of trading Pedroia doesn't seem to be paying much attention to his huge defensive value, especially considering that we now have a bunch of groundball pitchers.

With his bat in decline, his defense doesn't make up for his huge contract. He's a guy being paid based on reputation rather than on field performance.

He signed the extension in July/13. He finished 7th in 2013 MVP voting. How is that being paid on reputation? He's being paid on past performance, yes, but which players aren't?

Well, MVP votes are even more about reputation. His .300 AV and ..415 SLG are nothing to write home about that year.

I was going to say the same. Find me an available 2B with his O and specially with his D right now. The strategy is to set a GB pitching staff, since we do not want to pay big money in proved arms, isn't it? well, Peddy is a master piece in that regard, considering as well that XB has to improve, and probably you are going to need a guy who covers a bit more of the usual range of the IF.

In the current baseball economy, Pedroia's contract is a relative bargain imo.

See, now no one can say we agree 100% of the time blah blah blah.

We barely completely agree on anything. The only things we always clearly agree on are the common-sense issues that somehow get turned into actual arguments while i shake my head in a combination of amusement and annoyance.

Why are you personally attacking me now bro? WTF? If you keep this up, I'm going to have to put you on ignore and make 100's of posts about you being on ignore.

Chad Billingsley is an interesting name out there today. 3.65 Career ERA, GB% in the high 40s, K/9 in the 8-9s, innings usually in the 200 range.

Two significant elbow surgeries over the last two years is scary, but if he's healthy and available for only a few mill, he could be a steal.

So when is the talksox ppv fight available? A700/SBF vs MVP/User? ? I can't say I'm not entertained, but how the same arguments happen everyday is getting boring. Either ask Yeszir to open up fights and crap again and leave your s*** there, or talk baseball in the baseball forums. I enjoy reading all of your baseball posts even if I disagree, it's a shame they never last.

Maybe there'd be more baseball talk if you stuck around longer than 5 minutes.

Unless you're part of the solution, you're just part of the problem.

Brandon Beachy's electric, but he's as much of an injury risk as Billingsley. I'd like to see one, or both of them, sign as depth.

My preference is CB, but yeah, a low-floor high-ceiling SP signing would be great.

I'd be over here drinking a blueberry beer just to distract A700.
