Good move near term for the Yankees. They will need a strong pen.

But 4 years for almost any reliever is kind of risky.

Agreed, but doesn't the word risky apply to almost every free agent signing of any significance now?

Sure but I was thinking of the idea of a 4 year deal for a reliever in particular.

Absolutely, UN. Relievers are the guys you don't give long term deals to, unless they have absolutely ridiculous stuff. Then you have to pay the price of admission. For years we have been too right handed in our pen. We had Boone Logan, but he was serviceable. Thornton sucked. Myers was a disaster. We haven't had a true lock down power left handed reliever since Stanton. Miller has been excellent since converting full time to relief in 2012. Last yr was his first full, healthy season and he broke out in a big way. We are hoping that he has found himself and can put up 13K per 9 and match up with Betances at the back end of the pen. I have advocated for this move from the beginning of the offseason. No draft pick comp, it allows us to pick up the pick with Robertson and allows possibly the best reliever of 2014 to ascend into the closers role. It also allows us to finally lock down lefty power in the later innings in our own stadium. I like the Miller move. Jury is out on the Greene deal. So far, I cannot complain with the plan set forth by Cashman....so long as he doesn't go get Scherzer while not chasing Lester

The one thing that bothers me a little here is they sold high on Greene and bought low on Gregorius. I thought they could get more for Greene, to be totally honest

They're already talking platoon at SS. That's maybe the number one position where you need stability and continuity.

As it stands right now, the Yankees starting 9 are as follows...

1. Gardner LF

2. Prado 3B

3. Ellsbury CF

4. Teixeira 1B

5. McCann C

6. Beltran RF

7. Rodriguez DH

8. Refsnyder/Pirela 2B

9. Gregorius/Ryan SS

Shouldn't Ellsbury lead off?

I agree, Ellsbury should be 1st and Gardner 3rd

Last season Ellsbury did not do as well hitting 3rd as when he batted leadoff, plus his more daring base running would seem to serve him better in the leadoff spot.

Also Gardner’s increased power makes him more of a candidate for the 3-hole than he had been perceived to be prior to last season.

He had the highest OPS cause the offense was s***. No way he should be hitting 3rd. If he's your best hitter your season is over anyways.

Ellsbury

Gardner

Teixeira

McCann

Bitch-tits

Beltran

Prado

Assorted suck at 2B

Assorted suck at SS

Neither Gardner nor Ellsbury have very noticeable platoon splits (although Ellsbury had a curious reverse-split last year and Gardner had a bad case of s***** luck against lefties). There's no way to stop the Yankee lineup from being over-reliant on bounceback seasons (and health) from older players, but that looks at least half-decent on paper.

It's too quiet, I wonder if Max Scherzer plays drums and guitar?

The Yankees haven't made their big move now and it's not like them. I keep thinking they are going to unload a ton of cash for Scherzer.

Yup. They held fast on Lester.

I will not be surprised if they offer a mega-deal to Scherzer.

I'd either sign Romo right now, or let Kelley close. Miller and Dellin mixing in the 7th and 8th innings. Maybe going two innings each and switching off. Warren in the 6th inning or matching with Miller. Wilson doing the same for Dellin. Not sure if Jacob starts with the mlb. I'd like to see Mitchell get the 5th starter role. Even if we're able to add a starter, move Phelps into the bullpen or trade him away.

Meh, Warren had an awesome year. Betances and Miller were otherworldly. The only reason to sign Romo is if Warren is moving back to the rotation

I'm not saying they can't handle it, I'm just saying dellin and miller in the 7th and 8th could be devastating and have a hopefully rebounded Romo in the 9th. Really shorten up the game.

I think Dellin deserves a shot at the 9th inning. He had a near 4WAR as a reliever, which is Kimbrel territory. But I also don't think he deserves every shot as the closer. I would have Girardi mix and match the 8th and 9th depending on the handedness of the hitters coming to the plate. If the 8th looks more RH, then Dellin goes in the 8th and Miller the 9th. If both of them show aptitude to close, then you have the perfect scenario. If one chokes and one shines, then you have your set closer.

Plus, we have a LOT of pen depth in the minors. It is probably the only location of pure depth in the system, and with us no longer needing to rush a LH reliever, we have a pretty nice level of talent there too. I am against Romo coming unless the plan is to move Warren into the rotation. I think if we cannot add a rotation piece over the next month or so, then a guy like Romo works great. As it stands, we have

Tanaka

Pineda

Sabathia

Phelps

???

That is the rotation to start the yr with Nova on track by the ASB. If the year started right now, I think Warren is the #5 starter. We also have Banuelos as an option, but with him working back from TJS last yr, they didn't get to stretch him out. He might be more of an option come the ASB as well assuming he shows the durability in the minors. We don't have the internal depth we have had in years past. There is no Shane Greene waiting for his chance, which makes me think we have to bring in one more starter. Who knows, that starter might just be another year of Kuroda
