I think Brady and Manning are both in the top 5 QB's alltime, with Montana, Elway and probably Unitas I guess.

I'd swap Elway with Marino, but that's about it.

They're not dealing Lackey. My sig line says how I really feel about most of this.

Words have meaning ... "Should" they trade Lackey. There were legit reports that the FO would take inquiries on Lackey.

I wouldn't trade JBJ for Fowler. JBJ's ceiling is higher.

I disagree. Fowler is the better player, but with service time being 6 years vs 1 year, you don't do the trade, unless more is coming back to the Sox.

That's why he said "ceiling". And he's right, since JBJ has similar on-base ability but his defense is worlds better.

If Fowler is our best answer to the loss of Ellsbury then we had better sign Ellsbury even if we overpay.

Can Ellsbury average a WAR of 4 over the next 5 seasons? I think that he can. You can argue that it makes him a 100M man. With a little luck, some rest throughout the season and no serious health issues it would not be stretch for him to average a WAR of 5+ over the next 5 seasons. 6, 6, 5, 5, 4. Maybe he would take a deal for 105 / 6.

Agreed. Im not a fan of Fowler.

Not a lot of news floating around about Ells. I know that Boras is notorious for letting/making his clients wait till late in the offseason to sign, but all the reports that have said that teams are in on him are not that often so maybe he could come back here. But if not, i hope a trade for a big bat is what Cherries does.

Those are some big ifs, especially considering the fact that he'll be exiting his prime, not in the middle of it. Also, i think you're taking FanGraphs' dollar value a little too literally. That's just my opinion though.

Well you have a point for sure. IMO because of his injury misfortunes Jacoby still has 2-3 prime years left. If JBJ can be our 5th Outfielder next season he can spell Ell's in center and he may actually get more games in. WAR does favor players with more games played. The fact that we play in such a tough division every extra win that a player can contribute makes a huge difference.

Fred clearly doesn't know what he's talking about, but he's content trying to convince us that he does.

So far I've been right about Delarosa and Webster. Both got the s*** knocked out of them in their few appearances with the Red Sox this year. Neither one impressed. If you're so confident of their ability you take the bet offer I made you last summer or shut the hell up. I will bet you $100.00 that DLR never wins 15 games for us in a season nor will Webster win 16, one more since he is supposed to be better. Put up or shut the hell up. In other words, shut the hell up. As for Santana the rating went on POTENTIAL and TOOLS, and if the Guardians are interested in trading him (which some of you say) doesn't that put up a red flag that he might be overrated? BTW, that bet goes for you other two clowns to berated me for my take on them. Put up or shut up!!!!!!!!

That would f***ing blows for Boston. They lose a guy who is expected as their #2 starter to give them 200IP at above average. Lose their 20-30HR bat, and LOSE the #1 pitching prospect, who comes in handy when Clay's head explode.

A rotation of Lester and follow by those guys could quickly erode. How many of them can you count on as 200 inning while at above average?

I know this is a board where there is a lot of brain storming and opinions fly every which way but I can't for the life of me why so many here think that Carlos Santana is the answer to a maiden's prayer. First of all those who say he is similar to Victor Martinez are full of s***. Martinez in an authentic 300 plus hitter with 20-25 home run power and he has been consistent in that since he came up with the Guardians. Santana has never hit 300 and most likely never will. He is also a sup-par defensive catcher as well as a sub par first baseman. It is that reason the Guardians signed a Yankee RF in Nick Swisher and quickly made him their first baseman. Now they want to see if Santana can play third base. See a pattern here? Also, though it is a strong anti-Dodger bias of mine, I have always believed the Red Sox should stay far away from any player on that team or one raised in their system. The idea of trading Renaudo, Middlebrooks and some other player for Santana is so ridiculous it almost makes lost for words.

Yeah ... and I run a faster 40 yard dash than Tom Brady but that did not stop Brady from becoming the greatest QB in NFL history. Hassan is a gold glove caliber LF and he has one of the best eyes at the plate in the minors. You need competent bench players like we had this season with Nava and Carp. Sure he can wash out in 2014 but I used the word potential arrivals in 2015 did I not? Do not believe everything you read MVP. I doubt that either Carp or Gomes will still be with the Sox in 2015.

You ought to practice a little what you preach Mark. Your love affair with Carlos Santana is off the rocks. He is NOT a good catcher, he is NOT a good first baseman and therefore a liability in the field. There is always a chance he could suddenly erupt but since his trade to Cleveland for Casey Blake some years ago he has never has that breakout season so many of you think he is capable of if your love affair with this guy is of any indication. His value to the Red Sox would have to be as a monster hitter, someone capable of going something like 310-35-100 to make up for his defensive deficiencies. Now the Guardians are trying to see if he can play third base. Talk about panic.....if can't be a good defensive first baseman he can't be a third baseman either. He is a DH and nothing more.

.....so is batting average, for the most part.

Wins are far more useless. At least the batter has a little control over his average.

Yeah but OBP's more important. In Santana's case, the fact that he's never hit .300 means jack when he's getting on base at a very above average clip and hitting for power.

No you haven't. They're both prospects, the organization is still high on them, and you're still blowing hot air. What's new?

Then take me up on my bet your gutless wonder.

I, for one, would welcome Carlos Santana in Boston. That kid can hit.

And the greatest ever QB argument is between Tom Brady and Joe Montana. Everybody else is lower tier, that includes Peyton Manning.

Unitas? Marino? Elway?
