Who pitches game 1 in the playoffs?

Like mvp just said, we have a fine postseason rotation lined up. I think you could make a case for any of the top 4 guys starting. It's a nice problem to have. My gut says it goes Lester - Buchholz - Peavy - Lackey. No disrespect to Lackey and his excellent season intended. It's nice to imagine some team lining up their mediocre 4th starter while we toss Lackey out on the mound.

I'd argue that Buchholz pushes them past the Tigers.

Given, Scherzer has the stamina that Buchholz does not have, but when both are healthy, and in the playoffs, I might take Buch over Scherzer. Then you've got Lester - Peavy - Lackey vs Verlander - Sanchez - Fister.

Man, those teams match up well. As a baseball fan, I'd love to see a Tigers/Red Sox ALCS. As a Red Sox fan, I'd love to see a Sox/A's ALCS.

Obviously Buchholz needs to be stretched out more. At the same time, clearly he could have pitched another inning without much effort. I think he should be able to get to the normal output by October. Honestly, last night could not have gone any better.

Yeah, they're probably on a 3-start build up. 75 last night. 85-90 next game, 95-100 his following game, and then he's free. He's got 3 starts left, so he'll have his 2 more build-up games, and then a non-restricted game and then the ALDS.

I'd say Lackey first. If the Red Sox are going to score very few runs, I would rather it be against Scherzer/Price/Colon/Kuroda than whoever that team's #4 is.

Pal, I have to agree with UN here. Run support is complete fluke. In terms of the decision making process, it's below 'whether or not the team has JIF crunchy for Lackey's pregame PB&J"

It's a great feeling when you have multiple options for a game 1 starter. We lost 2011 because of pitching. That will not be the case this year, just no way. I can see a Tigers/Red Sox ALCS, even though I will be praying for an A's/Red Sox ALCS.

Logic is completely irrelevant here. Even so, lackey has been the team's best pitcher all year.

How is logic irrelevant? By this statement, then let's start Matt Thornton, because f*** logic!

Also, while Lackey has been very good, he hasn't been the best. Buch has been the best, and if he's all the way back, then he's the clear choice to start.

I do think the A's are a lock to pick up their division. Texas are really struggling lately(like the Rays)

Unless Lackey is a normal human being and hates crunchy peanut butter and it throws him into a rage. Don't mess with a man's PB&J! At least you didn't say Skippy or Peter Pan...

Well, as far as who starts Game 1. For Detroit, Verlander-Scherzer is a legitimate argument ... Scherzer is the clear choice based on 2013 output, but Verlander has a much stronger track record for managing the workload. I'd go with Verlander myself though it's a 50-50 choice.

For Boston it's much the same question - Lester's steady durability vs Buchholz actually being a lot better but with less certainty about pitching twice in an ALDS setting. It's a 50-50 call there too, but those are the only choices to me.

The Game 1 for any pitcher in the playoffs has to be your "ace." Anyone who you think can go out and win that game, regardless of what happened in the past.
