Roughly where would you have our system after the trade? (Probably where you had it before the trade, right?)

Exactly.

We made out far better than Texas with Garza, which I didn't expect for various reasons. Peavy being under control for more than 10 starts being one of them.

No way in hell that package nets Stanton.

From what I've been hearing, Stanton doesn't want to be there, and there not going to agree on an extension. Marlins might be looking to off load him before he walks for nothing, and this might be the best time.

There outfield is already loaded, adding Jackie Bradley Jr. to it would cost someone learning a new position.

So a JBJ, Cecchini, Barnes and possibly 1-2 other top 11-50 prospects I think would get the deal done I believe. Maybe an Alex Hassan who can play first base possibly.

I like boobs. When I call him Ben the Boob, it is a term of affection. BTW, I wonder when was the last time that someone used that term in reference to Benny.

Probably when Carl Crawford still wore a Sox uniform.

Texas raped its farm system for Garza. We got him for Iggy and two guys that aren't even top 30 prospects.

Now compare this return to the Garza return again. hahahaha

It was just a smart move by Cherington. The Sox had the payroll to take on Peavy's contract. Even though there wasn't much talent available at the deadline this year the Sox waited it out and came in with the best low ball offer for Peavy at the last minute.

So true. Iggy isn't trash. But I don't see him becoming more than a 7-9 hitter.

Aren't you that guy who has said nothing but bad things about Cherington's moves so far? Now you say he makes a smart one?

Yes. He is.

At the least, this deal helps the Sox through the latter part of this season.

I still believe the Sox have lost patience with Buch. By that I mean that BC was not going to allow Buch and his health or his whatever to dictate how the Sox finished this regular season. As it is now if Buch comes back...great...if not the Sox have bought themselves some insurance that they will not be spread too thin in SP and become irrelevant. What did they spend for that insurance? A guy that did not fit into their plans.

You know where guys that don't fit usually end up? They usually end up being throw ins on other deals. The Sox made their guy one of the center pieces of a deal and actually got something of practical value out of it.

Maybe it is not a blockbuster and maybe it does not get them to the promised land this year but IMO this deal is a very smart piece of baseball business.

Honestly I couldn't be happier with this move. I figured Cherington would pull some sly s***, but this is beyond what I expected to happen.

Another benefit is that since Peavy is set for next year, we can hold onto him for the year and get a draft pick for him, unlike the rental trades. (ie Garza) I'd say Seattle's offense might be a good welcome to Boston for Peavy. Too bad we have to face Iwakuma and Felix.

I wouldn't be surprised if Peavy goes Thursday or Friday and they give Dempster/Felix/Lester an extra day. Workman is scheduled for Sunday, but Peavy was scheduled for tonight so they may not want to give him that much rest.

As I come to terms with this, it definitely seems like Ben sold-high on Iglesias-- who was clearly outplaying his skill set. I also hope that this pacifies the baseball gods, who were angered by the decision to put a gift like Iggy's glove at 3B.

Last offseason, I figured the best strategy for the Sox was to find a guy they believed could get past struggles and turn into ace form for them. I thought Peavy was the best opportunity to catch lightning in a bottle... hopefully I was right.

If you break it down by team, I think we won in the trade, I can see the Tigers winning in the trade (replacing a likely suspended SS and improving a horrible infield defense) but I can't really see Chicago benefiting much from the trade. Then again we might not know the answer to that for many years.

I was critical of the Ryan Dempster signing, who sits at 6-8 with a 4.24 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, and .254 BAA. I'd be happy to let Peavy have his spot in the rotation.

And also of the Shane Victorino signing who is at .281/.327/.400/.727 a .730 OPS isn't worth $13M/year. Sorry.

I can't help but think if Theo were still here we'd have Cliff Lee, but we'd also have no prospects.

Please no! Theo left the organization in disarray ... Ben is the man!

Dempster's been better than most of the offseason pitcher signings, and a passable mid-rotation starter. You also conveniently forgot to add the value of Victorino's D to the equation. Health has been his issue.

You were mostly wrong about everything you predicted about this team. Maybe man up and admit it instead of coming up with this sorta crap?

Theo was actually very stingy with the farm system too. I think that's where Cherington learned it from. There is a balance to be struck. But today's game (i.e. a game without PEDs) means teams have to be younger to compete since players really start to show their age around 33-35, except for Papi who is just a miracle and should be put forward for sainthood.

Cherington says he does not expect to make another trade.

Come on man! He will find another arm for the pen ... mark my words

Not always that stingy, remember Adrian Gonzalez?
