I hate to see Iglesias traded, but Xander Bogaerts is the shortstop of the future. Peavy is not the pitcher he once was but a nice addition. I like the trade.

If all you had to give up was Iglesias and some trash, then this is a f***ing brilliant trade. You have Drew for this yr, you have WMB to play 3b and you have a top 5 prospect at SS for next yr. Also, you have 2 more yrs of control on Peavy, who, when healthy, is a solid #2 in the AL. The only bugaboo about Peavy when it comes to performance is his HR rate. I hope that gets magnified in Fenway, but I have a feeling this just significantly helped you out

Cafardo says it looks like Tigers are sending Brayan Villarreal back to Boston. Not bad. 26 yo RH BP arm. Horrid this year but was solid last year. 54.2 IP, 66/28 K/BB ratio. Something decent at least, if he can regain his form.

Looks good to me.

Throw in. Another AAA reliever with control issues.

Here's the latest from Speier...

Believe athletic 2B Cleuluis Rondon of Lowell is in the deal. As is Wendell Rijo, a 17-yr-old off to a spectacular start in the GCL

I had heard a bunch about Rijo being traded throughout this season but in the end I'm happy with the deal if that is it. I still think we could have done something regarding our 40 man crunch and Rule 5 draft, and while I'm not the biggest fan of Peavy recently I think this was a safe deal that can help us improve a little.

Significantly. IF Peavy can stay healthy.

I'm more concerned about improving in the playoffs and I'm not sure Peavy adds much there. I do think Peavy can help us win a few more games while Buchholz is out, which in and of itself helps us from slipping in the standings while we wait for him. I'd be surprised if he outperforms many of our starters going forward.

He walked 4.6 per 9 in 2012, and he's got 4.9 BB/9 at AAA. Nothing more than a throw in.

He also K'd 10.9 per 9 in 2012, so there's that. He's got a live arm but has control issues. Throw in for now, but could be more, if he gets some control. Not saying he will, but I like it. I've seen worse throw ins than him...

Again, IF healthy, Peavy is the best pitcher on this staff right now. You're seriously underestimating what he can do when healthy. The problem is keeping him healthy.

So Iglesias and 2 lottery tickets. This is a f***ing steal for Boston

Iggy is not chop liver but he was not going to be a fit here. Whenever you are looking at deal and considering it bold and safe at the same time...you have done something real right. If it all falls in place like it is being reported, that is one hell of a job by the Sox FO.

I don't think he needs to outperform Buch, Lester, or Lackey. He's not needed to be an ace. He's a solid #3 that goes after hitters and is a leader in the clubhouse. You put him in with our current top three and then have Doubront/Dempster as a #5, and we're good to go for the playoffs.

Villarreal is AKA depth, right? Having a semi-viable MLB caliber pitcher hanging around between AAA and MLB isn't terrible. It is all about adding depth and this won't hurt that quest.

I don't disagree with you that Peavy isn't an ace. however, since an ace would have cost Bogaerts and the Sox badly needed a SP upgrade with Buchholz in question, this can't be seen as a terrible deal.

So far I LOVE what I've heard about this trade.

Jose Iglesias still isn't much of a hitter, better than the past two years, but that isn't saying much.

Jake Peavy for a year and half! On reasonable money too?! No brainer. Better than the Garza trade.

The only thing that concerns me are the other minor league pieces included. Sometimes a trade like this sounds sweet up front and then you lose quality youngsters in A ball.

I think Peavy can significantly help if healthy. All accounts point to his stuff being just as good as its always been. And, he's a bulldog. I think he helps and he fits right in with this team. AND, he's not a rental as we have him under control for next year as well. I'll take Peavy, despite his health risk, over getting Lee by spending the farm.
