The worst part about this deal is that the Red Sox not only give up their best starting shortstop, but they also gave it directly into the hands of a playoff opponent. Fortunately, even his glove probably can't save the Tiger defense.

Is Peralta's glove that bad. He his hitting 300 with 10 HR's and a .990 fielding with 4 errors.

Seems like they're almost positive he's getting suspended.

FP is absolutely the worse defensive measure you can use. And Peralta is not the problem (UZR's of 11, 13 and 1 last three seasons including this one). He's referring to the rest of the infield, and part of the outfield.

The other end to this that is very impressive is that I have thought for the longest time that Iggy did not fit into the Sox long term plans. Instead of just sort of letting him drift away in some nebulous trade, they end up turning Iggy as a trade chip to really improve their prospects this year and hopefully next year as well. Sure there has to be another player in the deal but we would have known already if it was a player that would make us curl our eyebrows. Really have got to commend the Sox FO here. Played Iggy enough to be impressive allowing the Sox to use him to fill a need. Plus this one belongs to the FO entirely I suspect as opposed to the Dodger deal which was really a deal between the Sox and Dodger brass as much as anything.

Well played Sox FO!!!

Twitter-verse is saying Villareal also heading to Boston. No idea who else Sox are moving. Assuming that's Brayan Villarreal it's not a terrible add-on. I mean, a 2.63 ERA in 50 IP last year with 66 K and a 1.2 WHIP isn't terrible. I will be able to contain my excitement enough to sleep tonight, but a RHP is a RHP

Hopefully Iggy is the only "big name" involved...and as you said, still a 3B is needed.

Iggy is batting about 200 for the past 30 games .... love his glove but in the end there is no future for him. Give Peavy a chance as he just may rise to the occasion .... as you know the Sox are one of the best 6 teams in MLB ... they have a chance to win it all.

We gotta' find out who the last piece from the Sox side is pretty soon I would guess. I can't believe there isn't at least one more player, possibly more than one more.

Here's an idea: Since the Sox essentially gave up very little to get Peavy, what if the Phillies budge on Lee at the last minute? Would y'all do JBJ + Doubront + WMB for Lee (70% salary) and Young (have to take him off their hands)?

Would you?

I'm okay with most of that, but what I am most concerned about is when Doubront goes to the NL, has a 3.00 ERA for the next 4.5 years, and hear I-told-you-sos from the boob-haters out there.

By that time one of our pitching prospects should be in the rotation with a WHIP below 1.4

if we win the championship, I'll never look back at the trade. I never thought about Hanley after 2007. I wouldn't care if he beat every record in the book. The same goes for anyone who gets traded to get us another championship in 2013.

I'd consider it but I don't think there's something the Phillies would want that I would realistically do.

I would personally inquire about Giancarlo Stanton. I don't think that'll happen either but I think you at the very least have to see what it would take to lure him away. He's more of somebody that I would consider losing key pieces on the farm for. I know it's a totally different idea than trading for Lee, I'm just spitballing here.

UN does bring up a good point. Since we got Peavy for what seems like a steal, we can always take advantage of the time before the deadline and make a profit on the trade. I'm not saying trade Peavy for a profit but since we got Peavy without exchanging top prospects, we can see if Philly's Lee demands softens, especially closer to the deadline and now that we have a s*** more leverage.

My guess is the Phillies would still want Bogaerts, I don't think UN?s proposed deal would get it done.

I would love for that to happen, yes. I still don't think it would happen though

That's why i put in the caveats of them getting desperate at the last minute, and the Sox taking Young off their hands.....remember what the price for Peavy used to be? They wanted Bogaerts too.

If Cherington someone manages to take Lee and Young off the Phillies without giving up a huge amount of prospects, if that somehow happens...

I'm pretty sure he'd be easily my favorite GM of all time.

I know part of that is deadline anxiety, but you have to admit, BC is displaying quite the shrewd skillz so far.

Well I'm going to light my satan candles and sacrifice some goats in hopes that the trade package you outlined happens.

Are you moving Dempster too? Or just throwing his contract to the bullpen for now?

Woke up this morning and found out about the details of the trade. I don't know how anyone here could be upset about this. Peavy isn't an ace, but he's pretty good, and the Sox gave up Iglesias and a couple of low-minors wild card prospects that are nowhere near their top 20. That is a steal. Great job by Cherington on this trade. It solves two issues for them, because they can now move Workman to the bullpen, which gives them a real nice arm there as well.

And it also clears the way for WMB or Bogaerts to come up and play 3b down the stretch.

Mike Morse is very much available is what MLBtraderumors is saying. He could be the power bat from the Right Side that the Sox need down the stretch.

i hope ben atleast looks into it. He may just be a rental and shouldnt cost and significant prospects so i think it would be worth it.
