Rosenthal loses my respect by comparing this potential trade with the Beckett-Ramirez trade. Lee is going to be 35 and Beckett was 25. If the Sox make a trade for Lee it shouldn't include Bogaerts or Owens.

He actually had your respect to lose?

Can't say I agree. Rash decisions like this are how we turn into a team like the Phillies themselves. Full of big contracts that no one wants and a poor farm system.

How is this a rash decision??? You're trading for a guy who's been a consistent high 2's, low 3's ERA and FIP guy.

I was ok with losing out on Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez due to the money and many question marks, but it's hard not to be disappointed in not signing Wilson.

Wilson had a knack for holding 2 run leads with the bases empty ...

If Bradley were not a CF, he'd be fine for this discussion (Lee) ... just not sure what the endgame is other than bringing a 30-year old Ells back if Bradley is gone.

MLBTR is saying that executives and the Red Sox think that Young would accept a deal to the Red Sox, not just to the Rangers like previously reported. The Phillies just promoted Asche to play 3B, so Young might be forced to go to a bench role and it might be a strategy to incentivize Young to accept a trade elsewhere.

Also, I have read reports that the Red Sox have good enough prospects to deal for Lee without giving up Bogaerts. That might mean that Bradley could possibly be in play. Lee was scratched from his start, whether it is because he might get traded or whether he has neck soreness is up for debate. A deal for Young and Lee still seems like a possibility, although it is hard to tell.

Have been told #Redsox definitely have enough hi-end prospects to do Lee without Bogaerts #Phillies

Young will only approve a trade back to the Rangers, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. In contrast, Scott Miller of CBS Sports says Red Sox people believe Young would approve a trade there. The Phillies checked in with Young over the weekend about the Rangers and Red Sox. You have to wonder if the Asche promotion is designed to force Young into accepting a deal, as Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer says the rookie is up to stay and Young would likely be pushed into a bench role.

Anything but Bogaerts? Not on board with that. He's getting older and is owed a s*** ton of money. I'm not interested in Lee unless he comes without giving up our top guys. I think Bradley should be off limits as well because bringing in Lee would probably make resigning Ellsbury very hard and a young, cheap replacement, especially one as talented as JBJ, could really come in handy.

Nick Cafardo tweets: "From every indication Phillies won't settle for anything less than Bogaerts at the head of any package for Lee"

Please Ben, no. Do NOT give up Bogaerts. He's a generational prospect. I want to see him hitting 40 homers and putting up a .950 ops playing SS for the Red Sox for the next 10-12 seasons......

Amen on this one. As soon as the Phillies mention Bogaerts you got to say good bye.

Rosenthal tweeted earlier Young would wave no trade only for Rangers. That apparently is incorrect. Especially when you consider he has friends on the Red Sox (Napoli).

I have no problem with Rosenthal's premise on comparing the deals. Lee figures to put the Red Sox near the top for the next 2-3 years, as Beckett did. Young is no Lowell, but he would be a useful veteran addition.

It should be noted that the Red Sox don't figure to pay all of Lee's salary, with the sizeable prospect package they would be sending. They are holding out for half his salary right now, which some believe to be the principal issue. The inclusion of Young also complicates the money and the prospects.

IF we can get a deal done for Lee WITHOUT giving up Bradley or Bogaerts, then I cannot disagree with this move. However, it all depends on what the Phillies are willing to accept in return. I have read that they will not settle for anything less than Bogaerts, but I have also read that we have enough top prospects to get the deal done without including Bogaerts. It is going to be a crazy next 25 hours. The deadline is at 4 p.m. tomorrow, correct?

Dodgers Sign Brian Wilson

By Tim Dierkes [July 30 at 1:26pm CST]

The Dodgers signed free agent reliever Brian Wilson to a minor league deal, tweets Yahoo's Tim Brown. The Beard had a long road to recovery from April 2012 Tommy John surgery. He spent his entire career in the Giants organization, racking up 171 saves in the process. The Giants non-tendered him after last season, and the fully-recovered Wilson auditioned for many teams Thursday. Wilson had three offers, notes Brown. The 31-year-old reliever is represented by MVP Sports Group.

The Dodgers' bullpen struggled at the outset of the season, partially due to the decision to anoint Brandon League the closer. Kenley Jansen officially usurped that role in mid-June. The Dodgers have also gotten good work from lefties J.P. Howell and Paco Rodriguez.

The tentative plan for Wilson is to begin at the Dodgers' complex in Arizona, then go to Rancho Cucamonga, and then report to the Dodgers in two weeks, tweets Brown. In theory, the move could take the Dodgers out of the running for other, similar relievers available for trade.

Nice addition of the Dodgers. Plus, it will really piss off SF fans.

Gordon Edes is reporting that Arizona is the frontrunner for Peavy. Hopefully this does not lead to an act of desperation on our part to get Lee.

Doubt Red Sox would have been a factor here. They are trying to land a bigger fish, anyways. If they get Lee, they probably have enough BP help internal. Or maybe another setup type.

If true, it may give the Phillies a bit more leverage with Lee. The Red Sox may not want to come away with nothing.

Lets hope it gets done soon. This is unbearable. The Rays have gotten better and their pitching kills us and the Orioles will make another move before 4pm tomorrow.

We need a rotation that can compete with the Rays Tigers and Rangers. And a rotation of Lee, Buch, and Lester could be the best top 3 starters in baseball if Buch healthy and Lester back to form.

We need to worry about winning the divison before we worry about winning a World Series.

This guy Rich Smith is now tweeting the Dodgers have jumped back in on Lee. That's a bad sign. They don't figure to care whether the Phillies pick up any of Lee's salary. The Red Sox could come out of this empty handed. You don't have time to haggle with the Dodgers around.

The Phillies are asking for guys like Bradley, Cecchini, and Barnes. The Dodgers can't sniff that package.

I doubt it will - different levels of discussion. If there is a panic, it'd be to move on Bud Norris. Lee is a completely different timber, and as much a move for 2014. It would be risky, and no one pitcher can increase world series odds that much - but Lee is an elite starter. Peavy has no impact on this. Also, the Red Sox pitching has been solid - they can afford to come out of this empty handed.

We lost a couple of heartbreakers to Tampa ... we can compete with them already. Shoring up righty bats could do just as much.

Really. I understand that Tampa is our toughest competition but we have beaten them quite a bit this year. Also, the run they are on now is completely unsustainable and it is undeniable that they will regress at some point. All we have to do is stay close until they inevitably fall back down to earth. I'm not saying we're guaranteed to take down Tampa but we've managed to have pretty significant success against them already and I think we have just as much chance to beat them as they have to beat us.

Consistent with what Rich Smith tweeted last night: Bradley, not Bogaerts.

You better fasten your seatbelts.

Tampa's starters are young and locked in right now. That is what makes them the Sox biggest threat the rest of the way. To begin with they could force the Sox into that one game playoff which is a crap shot. That is why the Sox still need to do something with the pitching, at the same time don't blow up the farm system.

I'm not going to lie, I think Harold Reynolds makes the draft chat entertaining just because he's the token "Special Olympics" guy that Autism Awareness parades around in order to make the rest of the retarded population not feel as bad about themselves.

Harold Reynolds is dreadfully stupid. I'm pretty sure I also heard him say that Erik Aybar on LAA should be off-limits. I could be mistaken, though.

Also, is anyone else really amused by how much of a moron Ruben Amaro is? That guy just refuses to admit that his team is terrible and needs to rebuild.

The Red Sox feel a trade for Lee is highly unlikely, tweets Yahoo's Tim Brown, but Jake Peavyand Bud Norris are still in play for them.

The Phillies are believed to have asked for a package headed by Bogaerts and Brandon Workman, plus a big league ready outfielder, according to ESPN's Jayson Stark. Stark's source agrees with the consensus, that the Sox won't give up Bogaerts.

Though the Phillies want Bogaerts as the centerpiece of a Lee deal, the Red Sox "view his inclusion as a non-starter and will not consider proposals that involve him," writes John Tomase of the Boston Herald. He says the Red Sox are willing to deal multiple top ten prospects though.
