Crain is a dominant high leverage reliever that replaces Miller. Marrero is blocked by Bogaerts, Cecchini, and Iglesias. I don't think it's the worst trade in the world.
Posted
I was personally disappointed when we drafted Marrero (in the first round) anyway, and Crain is probably the best reliever on the market. He'd be better than almost all of the American relievers on our team. Even after when Miller returns.

I think Miller is done for the year. I'd say that Crain would be the best reliever on the roster.

He is. I meant when Miller returns next season, and assuming we keep Crain.

Edit: The thing for me is if we trade for Crain now I feel like we should have traded for him in the beginning instead of getting Thornton.

Buying high on a reliever having a career year is never a good idea. Granted there is nothing that screams "fluke" from Crain's season other than the zero homers given up, but still.

What do you think about Oliver Perez? We probably could get him for cheaper.

I like Perez after his transformation to reliever, but i don't think he could be had on the cheap. He's also not really a fit for Fenway being a fly-ball lefty pitcher.

Read that the Cubs are asking for the last and best offers for Garza. What would be the Sox best offer? I wouldn't give up any of our top 8 prospects for him.
Posted
It's a rental for 2 months. You can't give up anything major for that. On the other hand, they are on top right now, and want to stay on top. The future is today. You can argue it both ways.

Garza could be down to the Rangers and the Red Sox. The only caveat is how much you give for a rental.

Could be and is are two different animals SoxSport. If that is correct about Garza via Red Sox and Rangers I'm pleased and delighted because IMO we need a quality starting pitcher very badly in the second half. Since I believe Theo Epstein is sensible why would be hold onto Matt when first of all the Cubs will not have him next season and more importantly have no chance this side of Heaven of getting to the Playoffs this year. I will use as a segue what the Nationals did with their young pitcher last year when they shut him down and said there will be o ther years for play to the gallery. Well not this year; the Nats seem to be going in the other direction. I think when you have a chance to strike gold you go for it because next year may not be next year.

Hitting much closer to home, I vividly remember the post 2007 season when our young guns Pedroia, Lester, Papelbon and Ellsbury were waxing poetic about what a grand future the Red Sox had. Well five years later and five seasons coming and gone and nothing accomplished in the championship arena, not a division, league or WS title. What would the cost be for Garza? I would hope Cherington is on the horn with Epstein or one of his minions and find out what they would want for him. Sure they would be playing us against the Rangers, but I don't relish the thought of seeing Webster toe the rubber for us anymore this season and getting the s*** beat out of him. I think one good starter and another solid reliever and we could actually make a move towards winning something this year. Without that, no.

I'd rather have a starter I'd be comfortable is better than most of our in house options, and one that would help us where we really need it, the postseason. I don't think Garza adds that much, so I wouldn't want to pay extra money/prospects unless we were getting a real benefit that increased our World Series odds. I don't think Garza is that type.

I hear Buchholz didn't throw today, and his 2nd half availability is open to question. My feeling is they are on the fence right now with Garza--much of it related to Buchholz. They could blow this thing if Buchholz sits and they don't get Garza. Don't think they want that. The Rangers look more desperate about getting Garza with their starters down, but their prospects (e.g., Profar) aren't doing so well right now, so the Red Sox can outdo them if they want to. Plus you know Hoyer and Epstein will give Cherington every chance.

It's worse than just not throwing. he needs to be examined again.

Clay Buchholz will be examined Friday

Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz, who experienced some soreness in his shoulder during a bullpen session Sunday, did not pick up a ball during the All-Star break and is expected to be re-evaluated Friday, according to the Providence Journal.

Buchholz has not pitched since June 8 and has a 1.71 ERA in 84 1/3 innings this season.

Can you lead me to something I can read on this? I am just wondering if this is Buch looking for a second opinion or the Sox throwing their hands up and looking for more info before they are forced into the FA market for a SP.

I just found the blurb that I quoted on CBS Sportsline Fantasy. It's short, but it doesn't sound encouraging.

Thanks for posting up the links 700. Clearly this is the Sox now trying to understand more about what they are up against.

Maybe the Doc will order another MRI. Although the last one was on June 27th and he has not done much of anything that would tax the shoulder more since then. Obviously this is just an opinion but I suspect that the Sox are going to find out more about their pitcher than they want to know but should have suspected given the history.

Garza shouldn't cost a ton because he is a 2 month rental with no draft pick attached to him. But given he's one of the better arms available and multiple teams will be in on him it will drive the price a bit. If I woke up tomorrow and saw the Red Sox traded for Garza giving up Workman and say Lavarnway, I wouldn't throw up in my mouth. But anything more then that and I'm not feeling good about it. He's a #3 type and sounds like the Cubs want a #1 package. Guess we will see.

Workman AND Lavs? No. His numbers are good since coming back, but his schedule was fairly easy. It remains to be seen how good he actually is right now. If there were no injury concerns, the price would be higher.

I wouldn't mind Garza going to the Rangers. There was talk of them including Mike Olt and at least one pitching prospect, which would be nice to see the Rangers farm team take a little hit.

That be a pretty damn good young IF for the Cubs if Olt Blossomed like Rizzo.

Not sure where else to put this, but the Sox are in talks with Dustin Pedroia on an extension. This one is a no-brainer. Get it done, I don't care if it takes Cano money -- and this is coming from a guy who practically never advocates long term signings.
