Samardzija would be at least the number two starter until Buchholz comes back. He is now what the Sox can only hope Allen Webster will one day be. It will take a lot so I'd would offer up a package that featured Webster. If it would take much more, I'd tell them to forget it.

The last 24 hrs you might see surprise deals that slipped under the media radar. This could be one. My guess the Red Sox will deal for a reliever who hasn't been mentioned.

They're not getting Peavy--and I doubt Lee. They don't want to give up top prospects for Peavy. In Lee's case, doubt he's available.

I seen on TradeRumors that the Phillies are not interested in dealing Lee at this time. I think the Sox trade for a reliever or maybe sign Wilson (I Hope) but as far as the SP situation i think after Lester's performance today the Sox are gonna wait on Buch to get healthy and hope he comes back and be the pitcher he was at years start. If they trade for a starter i think its gonna be a mid-tier guy i dont think a Ace will be brought in this year. I think the A's will get Peavy cause Colon is gonna get suspended next week when all this PED stuff comes out, also since Lee is off the table apparently a James Shields or a Tim Lincecum wont be traded for or even available. I have to say ive thought about it over and over again and looked at Peavy's Stats and the more i look and see how much hes owed if it cost us a Top 10 prospect and picking up all his contract id say Hell No lets keep what we got as far as SPs. Maybe if Workman can hold us over until Buch gets back and our bats can keep hot for the rest of the year we may be alright. A name that i havent seen mentioned but i read he was available at the start of the year was Rick Parcello and maybe the Sox will trade for a SP type like him. Im not saying he'd be a good option but he'd be a proven major league starter who prolly wouldnt cost us a Top 10 prospect to sacrifice the future. I believe more and more as the days get closer to the deadline that a big deal wont be made but moves like the Sox done at the start of the season will. We dont need flashy moves we need results from whoever we get.

Can the mental masturbation stop now?

I think if Amaro is reading the tea leaves and hasn't deluded himself he has to know his team isn't going anywhere this season. If he wants to hold onto to his veterans and try again next year, well, that's one thing. If he believes his team will miraculously recover, then he is deluding himself. That ball club has been wildly inconsistent this year and has been unable to put together any type of run up to now. No reason to believe they will do so save for the fact that the Nationals are doing exactly the same, the Mets are building for the future, and the Marlins are going nowhere but down. Perhaps he thinks he can grab a WC spot but his team will have to have a better record than they have right now to do it. Something tells me he might just decide to have an auction this coming week.

Unless Amaro rebuilds his roster, this group will go nowhere next season

Suiters appear to be falling by the wayside on Peavy. Wouldn't that be an ironic outcome. CWS unable to convince anybody on the asking price end up having to lower their expectations. Who would have thunk that with 4 or 5 reported suiters at the doorstep.

MLBtraderumors.com says that the Red Sox is still "very much in" on Jake Peavy and that the CWS are asking for teams top prospects. If the Sox deal any Top 10 guys for Peavy and pick up all his remaining $ the front off is crazy. Reports says that the CWS asked about Boggy in the deal. Writers believe the price will drop by the deadline but i'd bet that Peavy is still in a Sox uniform but they wont be Red id say he stays in the windy city.

The WSx will drop their asking price on Wed. I hope the RSx pass. Middlebrooks and Bogaerts at 3B and SS would look good right now against LHP.

The other factor is Lee. The Phillies should sell high on Lee--he'll never go higher. Maybe they'll come to their senses at the last minute. He's the one guy the Red Sox would give a high prospect for.

I really don't think Peavy is an answer to anything for the Red Sox...he might be an answer for somebody else but not the Sox.

Olney says Sox are behind A's and STL for Peavy.

I think Peavy doesn't come here if top 10 prospects are involved and ChiSox don't take on any salary.

I think that is our left side of our infield for the future. I could see Iggy traded at some point. Iggy started off red hot and has cooled off, he is an elite defender but i dont know if his bat would ever come around. But so many people on this site are all about trading Middlebrooks but he has the potential to be a power bat at the corner and with Boggy beside him it could become the best hitting left side in the majors. But since Will is struggling now people are trading him like he done nothing for us last year too many people are what can u do for me now and dont see what we would be losing in the future. He was our top prospect and for good reason until he came up and Boggy hit the scene.

Cliff Lee would be an amazing add. But realistically, the White Sox drop their asking price and throw in a reliever plus eat some of Peavey's salary. We'll see. Philadelphia is gonna ask the moon for Lee because he is a proven playoff performer.

But consider that Lee is 34, 2 years older than Peavey, and Lee's K/9 has dropped slightly each year over the past 3 years. Why, I don't know why. But makes you wonder if the added asking price is worth it. Not to mention the NL tends to make pitchers ERAs look a lot nicer than they should be if brought over to the AL.

Philly's asking "a lot" for Lee:

Red Sox can take a hard line with the ChiSox on Peavy. They can take his contract without needing Chicago to eat salary. That is worth giving them a Merrero instead of a Cecchini prospect-wise. Also, the Sox starters for all the worry have largely been pretty good. I don't feel comfortable going into October with this group sans Buchholz obviously - but they have performed and given this team a chance to win virtually every start and that has to be respected.

That's what I was saying myself until recently. That is, until I saw just how good a hitter Garin Cecchini was. He needs to be in our lineup when he's ready and not be traded under any circumstances. As for Middlebrooks, I would love to see the Red Sox convert him into a first baseman instead of trying to trade or sign some guy for a year or two. An infield of Cecchini, Bogey, Pedroia and WMB would be formidable and for a good number of years. If the opposition want any of those players the Red Sox have to tell them to hit the road.

That's next year. Right now, they need more rhd hitting against lhp. That means Middlebrooks-Bogaerts at 3B-SS.
