Mike Carp for a PTBNL. I like this move from a sox standpoint. Kinda bummed the Yankees didn't pursue him. Big power that was thwarted in SafeCo. No patience shown at the big league level, but in a much larger sample size in the minors, he's shown a great eye. He's a value addition with no risk and the potential for big rewards

For a pretty minor move it's a decent pick up. Guy had good power in the minors and then injured his should on what opening day last year?

vs LHP .300/.341/.462

vs RHP .241/.323/.398

Not sure how he's managed that being a LHH

He's probably not worth the player they DFA to make room for him. Let's just hope the outfield stays healthy this year.

Kalish was put on the 60 day DL so no one was removed from the 40 man roster.

Oh, so this is a harmless pickup then. I'm surprised they hadn't done that already-- they had run very low on spots last time I heard. Let's just hope that moving out of Seattle will do Carp some good.

He's a value pickup akin to Jeremy Giambi and David Ortiz circa 2003. Lots of power, pretty pedestrian production. If they can manage to unlock some of his potential, he could be an all star caliber player. If they do not and he continues to be mind numbingly inconsistent, then he'll be off the roster come May

Good upside potential. Hurt last year, but he absolutely tore it up at Tacoma in 2011.
I don't want to burst your bubble about the guy, but Wily Mo Pena well outperformed Carp on that 2011 Tacoma team. Eight players on that team had OPS over .900 and 4 of them were over .1000, including Ryan Langerhans. Carp's 2011 at Tacoma probably doesn't mean too much. He's a mediocre player with a below average glove.

Pena would have been a good signing at the same age. The issue is that Pena was acquired for a similarly valuable pitcher
Pena would not be a good acquisition now or in 2011 when he tore up Tacoma even more than Carp did that year. Tacoma seems to be a hitters haven with 8 players OPSing over .900 (4 with more than 1.000). I don't think any stats at Tacoma are a good barometer for success in the majors, regardless of the age of the player.

Something isn't right here. This move smells fishy. I don't want to be crabby about this, but as others have pointed out, Carp is no Mike Trout, or even Tim Salmon. I'd be prepared to caviar eyes if this guy ever gets to the plate in a ML game for the Sox this season. I'm not sure I see the porpoise of an acquisition such as this. Mark my words, this will turn out to be a whale of a mistake that will just garner the FO more anemones in the long run.

How's that "retirement" from TS going?

I'm not sure I'm back for good. This was more of a "hit and pun", if you will.

The second post after I return being you acting like a douchebag has me leaning towards not starting again though, if that helps.

Of all the douchebaggy things I could have said, that's pretty low on list. Why so sensetive?

It is a big mistake. The guy is too susceptible to a good hook. Fans will quickly tire of him floundering at the plate, producing nothing but LOBsters.

You are right. I don't like how this smelts. This Carp is no keeper. Hopefully, the Sox FO will do the right thing and catch and release.
