One of the most encouraging things I've heard this spring:

Bard strikes out the side in order. Hitting 97 mph.

Wow, he found his velocity after having the winter off to reset and refocus. Who would have thought?

Please let him start to do that consistently. I don't care about the ST strikeouts, but getting his velo back consistently would be huge for the team.

Ease up there, champ. There was plenty of room to hope it would happen, but nothing guaranteed. Fans had plenty of reason to be worried.

Hanrahan posted a 6.75 ERA in 2011 Spring Training. Then he posted a 1.83 ERA during the season.

He may be one of those guys who has to have that adrenaline to be effective. Kind of like Pap, who has allowed 7 earnies on 8 hits in 1.2 IP.

That's good to know, hope it's the same this season!

Napoli (you know, the $5mm player) just went deep again. I believe that's his 3rd HR in 3 games.

Meanwhile, Adrian Gonzalez is slugging .235 with 0 HR in Arizona.

Not saying Napoli is a better hitter, I'm just sayin....Napoli could destroy Fenway Park and LHP.

It don't mean a thing, 'cause it's only Spring.

Napoli could end up being the bargain of the offseason.

@PeteAbe: In other Joel Hanrahan news, his wife having their 1st baby on Monday. So wise to keep his stats over 3 whole innings in perspective

$5M base salaries is the best part of the contract. If he stays off the DL, he likely could come close to 2011 season.

Yes you and a few choice others saw there was hope for him to recover and we got mocked pretty hard for believing it . So I'm just returning the favor to all the idiots who couldn't evaluate a pitchers ball sack, even if it was sitting on their chins :D

The report I read had him topping out at 95. The velocity is not as important as his command at this juncture.

That sounded like an encouraging outing for Bard. Didn't hit the mascot. Didn't hit any batters. Didn't allow himself to be hit......Hey at this stage of the game, if Bard can just put one good outing atop another, he might just work his way back to some sort of a role for the Sox.

You control your emotions and name-calling about as well as a bratty 12 year old girl. STFU.

Lighten up lady and stop taking yourself so seriously. I even said you and SFF were right. That's more credit than you've ever given me.

It is still encouraging Sox Sport. Listen, we need all the good news we can get. As for Bard, here's hoping I was 100% off on him.

Agreed. Even if it was only 95, if he's recovered his command, I'll take that. 95 is more than enough to allow a power reliever to set up his slider, and that's all we're asking for from Bard.

Heck, Papelbon could get it done dealing it in at 92, 93 because his command was all that. Bard hasn't got that level of control, but if he really is hitting in the mid to high 90's and he's gotten over his case of the yips, that's plenty of reason to rejoice.

Seriously you two? Your combined age is 100+ and you're doing this?

Remember you youngins', there is that magic age when regression starts setting in and we start the journey in reverse, back to our childhood. At a combined age of 125+ I would think that at least one of them must be on the road back. Come to think of it, I might be on the same road......in the passing lane no less.:D:D

Fred is on record as 71, so the combined age is closer to 125 than 100.

Fred 71

VA 29

100

Still getting 100 with my recalc. Where's the variance?

That would explain a lot. :)
