Why in the world would Cherington sign a platoon player who could only hit left-handed pitching?

There are far more right-handed pitchers in the game and teams only face a left-handed pitcher anywhere from 25-33% of the time, on average.

Now, given that stat it would make sense to get a platoon player who could only hit right-handed pitching. But the Gomes signing is just ridiculous. 2-years $10M to a guy who can only be utilized 25% of the time.

Same argument can be used for the people who point to Victorino's strong numbers against lefties. The numbers just don't add up.

This signing makes little sense. The guy has been with three teams in the last two seasons. Why would he command a two year contract at $5 million per year???

More whining from Lord Snow. It would be one thing if he actually defended his argument, but it seems like people constantly are making very good arguments and his response is more whining and bitching.

Platoon players are just what you said, platoon players. Therefore, I expect him to be platooning with someone who can hit righties.

Koji Uehara is a really good signing by Cherington. His first of the off-season!

1-year $4.25M is good value for a pitcher with a good track record (when healthy).

Ok, so Victorino has had two seasons he has hit under .270 against right hand pitchers, last year was one of them. that makes him a platoon player?

Gomes might be a platoon player, but he still has a higher OBP than Ross and hits more homeruns than Ross. So if Ross was, so is Gomes i guess.

Not to argue, but wasn't Ross signed so he and Sweeney could platoon?

The sox will probably have 2 left handed OFers in their starting lineup as well as a lefty DH. Having a right handed guy who crushes lefties in Fenway when you're facing Price, Sabathia, Pettitte, Romero, Chen, Matusz, et al multiple times lends flexibility to your roster. Cherigton has said all offseason in every interview that he wants flexibility and depth. Gomes provides that. The price is high, but not prohibitive

Sure, probably, but a lot of people are acting like Gomes is a step down from ross. They have very similar obp against righties (.005 higher for ross) but ross has almost no power against righties averaging about 1 homerun every 33 at bats were as gomes is about 1 every 20. If he has to play all the time he shouldn't be a huge drop from Ross.

I am a big Cody Ross fan, and still don't think it's fair to act as though Gomes is a step down from him.

In reality, if we retained Cody Ross all together...What are the odds he would have even been able to be as productive/successful as last season? I doubt he could replicate that year, honestly. People would bitch and say we could have had Gomes.

The grass is always greener, eh.

I would have rather given Cody Ross the 3-years $25M he was looking for, even though that was overpaying, than give Shane Victorino 3-years $39M. Ross is a better player. Played good defense in right field. And was a good fit with the Red Sox.

Jonny Gomes is going to be a regret. He will be released by August.

Could be.

I was all for retaining Cody Ross - trust me. I am just making the point that regardless of what happens, someone is going to say it was a mistake. If we would have kept Cody Ross and never acquired Gomes, people would have said "Cody Ross was a mistake, we could have had Gomes and he would have been worth the extra, he is better" etc.

No he isn't. Stop whining.

They have similar career OPS's, yet Victorino is a worlds better defender and baserunner. It was still an overpay, but saying that Ross is a better ballplayer than Victorino borders on the moronic.

Right. Ross was waived by the Marlins in 2010. He virtually played himself into a reserve with the Giants in 2011. He had decent home statistics with the Sox in 2012. Now, let a team with a short memory overpay for him. Victorino will be overpaid, but he is a better player than Ross.

Ross has never received a major award. Victorino has twice been in the top 20 in the MVP voting. Three times a Gold Glove winner. He was an all-star as recently as 2011.

Ok i figured it out, Lord Snow, do you hate Hawaiians?

Exactly.

This really isn't a bad move. The only reason it ends up an overpay is because of how the market shaped up, and for all of the people you could over pay he's far from the worst. Let the guy get on the field and see what he can do before complaining about him. From everything we have to on to this point in time, Victorino is the better player.

I just didn't see another thread concerning Gomes to bump.

His defense has been better than advertised and has some real clutch moments. He seems to be a great team player and has been a solid addition here.

All I heard all offseason is that we overpaid for Gomes, who is a defensive liability and can only hit lefties. People kept saying he is more suited for a DH role. That might be true, but he has shown that he can more than hold his own in the OF. He had the unassisted double play on a great catch a couple nights ago, he had a great catch against the Green Monster, and then last night he showed off his arm strength gunning down the guy at home plate. He has made some great plays defensively recently. Not to mention he has had a few clutch hits this year. He isn't the best player in the league, but he sure as hell does contribute a lot to this team when he is given the opportunity. Also, his clubhouse presence is said to be a great one. Overall, I did not know if I like the signing at first, but he has definitely made me like the signing. He is a great team player, like mvp 78 stated.

Gomes' defense has been a pleasant surprise. You don't expect to see a guy who is built like a linebacker play outfield D like he has. As for his offense, he has a track record of being a good platoon player. He hits lefties very well.
