IDK, $13 mil/yr for 3 years of Victorino is so much less exciting to me than 1 year/$13 million for Haren would have been.

True, but I believe Haren would have chosen the Nats regardless. It's a much better situation for him. The NL East is much better to build value in then the AL East. And he has to be taking his next contract into consideration. Especially with SP prices these days.

I really hope there is something bigger in the works with Ellsbury for a SP. I like Victorino a whole lot more as a CF then a corner OF...

That is a possibility. We will have to wait and see.

If we are heading down this road, I dont mind the signing so much.

Rid the clubhouse of another spoiled soft player personality.

If they acquired Victorino with the intention of moving Ellsbury, I dont mind the move.

Good point Rdsxmbnt...

They said Gomes would be playing a lot in left. I think they wanted an outfielder who could catch the ball. Gomes and Swisher as the corner OF's would be an adventure.

Haren had the chance to go to a legitimate WS contender, not have to worry about the stress of being a top of the rotation guy, and also stay out of the media spotlight. Their rotation is disgusting for 2013.

Strasburg

Gonzalez

Zimmermann

Haren

Dettweiler

Agreed on this. LF is small, and you can stick a defensive liability out there. CF and RF however, you might as well stick 2 natural CF's (Ellsbury and Victorino) out there

Gomes is not going to be the starting LF. He will see the bulk of his playing time in LF.....as the 4th/5th OF and filling in for Ortiz at DH.

If the Red Sox did sign Shane Victornio then No Alcohol of any kind should ever be allowed at the winter meetings again!!!

All we can hope for now is that he fails the physical.

3-$37.5MM is not a bad deal at all. Our OF looks really solid for 2013, hopefully SP help is on the horizon.

I'm seeing 3/39M... not like it's that big of a difference

It might be 39, I haven't looked into it at all yet. I was only going from a700's post on the 1st page

Maybe Victorino will be used in a platoon type role. His splits against Left-Handed pitching have been markedly better than what he has done against righties.

They are not paying him 13M to platoon.

This is what I was concerned about when I started talking about all of these middling players the Sox ere chasing. Why overpay for middling players that are not really going to do much for you.

I was OK with Napoli although I really wanted them to go in a different direction. But how is Napoli a 3/39 player and Victorino a 3/37.5 player? If I was going to overpay I would overpay for the Mack Truck. Never mind overpaying for multiples of these pregnant roller skates. Here they go again making the market for players.

Victorino is protection for Ells?...not really. So what does this mean? Does it mean Kalish is not going to play in 2013? What the hell happened with that. I don't want to see Victorino play. I don't want to see placeholders play. I want to see Kalish play. The Sox have waited and waited and waited for Kalish. They shipped off Riddick cause the A's wanted him for nitwit Bailey putting their eggs in Kalish basket. Now what...he is not going to play...again....this time cause we have Victorino!

In case you have not heard by the way. Victorino is done. The Sox got him...no s*** Sherlock. Nobody else was going to offer him that kind of money.

I'd prefer to invest in Victorino for three years than in Cody Ross for the same amount of time. Victorino has been more consistent than Ross and is a better baseball player.

Ok the AAV is high. But like I said for Cherries to close the deal(which a lot of people think he is incapable of doing) he likely had to go to a higher AAV to be the multiple 3 year offers he was reported to have gotten. There was even a 4 year offer. Looks to me like the FO did what it had to do to get the guy they wanted without having to go to 4 years. This looks to be the plan this off season. Less years, higher AAV.

With "middling" hitters, it depends on what their skill set is. If they all have OB% skills, the lineup gets longer.....you just need to have the horses to drive them in.

"Middling" hitters who don't get on base, but hit solo homers in games that don't count obviously doesn't help.

Lets see what they do after this move.

jung, you've been pointing out, rightly, that we seemed to be getting weaker on defence. Victorino is a good defensive outfielder isn't he?

That's a good point. I don't get this move. His splits against RHP are terrible.

Cheaper and less risk then Hamilton. Doesn't cost a pick, or even worse send a 1st rounder to the Yankees.

Also Ellsbury could be traded for SP help and they could still be in the market for a RF. We will have to wait until this pie is done cooking before we judge it too hard.

And where is he going to platoon? His speed whatever it might be now is wasted in LF. As for waiting to see who else they sign...I don't see who they would sign that would make Victorino for 3/37.5 make any sense.

Even if they rope in Hamilton spending that much money on Victorino makes no sense. Go ahead Sox spend the money but "Mother of God" don't spend this kind of money on the Victorino's of the world.

He was the next logical choice,

Hamilton- too expensive too risky

Swisher- probably more expensive, sends Yankees a sandwich 1st rounder

Victorino- Better then Ross, also had multiple offers, some longer then what Sox gave him, solution? Give him more AAV. That's what you can do with payroll flexibility.

Yes Victorino is a better defender and I certainly hope Gomes is a backup of some sort cause he is terrible in the field. But Victorino is wasted in LF and unless something else happened to Kalish again (although what...did he fall off his couch this winter) shouldn't he be in RF.

If Victorino is going to platoon are we now paying 3/37.5 for platooning outfielders?

and as I mentioned earlier...I don't want to hear about Victorino's speed on the bases cause we already saw what happens when the Sox have multiple speed weapons in the lineup...nothing...that's what....nothing!

Posted

Ok lets just see how this plays out.

Gomes/Kalish in left, Ellsbury in center, & Victorino in right

Like to see a Hamilton in left instead of a platoon.

Where with Victornio hit in this current lineup?

He's not platooning. He's playing RF. They wanted someone that could play RF and CF(CF most likely so they have an in house option if they decide to trade Ellsbury now or at some point in the season). The OF right now is Gomes/Kalish in LF Ellsbury in CF and Victorino in RF.

Right, because Crawford being a bust has an impact on what Victorino does.
