I swear to god these Shane Victorino rumors at 3-years $38M better be a joke.

Victorino sucks. He's terrible. He is the kind of bat that hurts a line-up, not helps it.

How can Cherington keep his job if he burns $38M on ANOTHER bench player?

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss Theo.

Is the money everyone's biggest issue?

Because the guy stole a career high 39 bases (7th in the Major Leagues) and is pretty good defensively (3 time Golden Glove winner).

Admittedly he had a career low BA last season, I believe around .250...

In my opinion yes in this situation it does come down to the money.

I had no problem with him in Philly, i thought he was a solid player there. But 38 mil is just a lil much. Supposedly a team has offered him a 4 year deal. I hope he takes that.

I wonder if this is true and all the reports are accerate if he will be Boston's new center fielder and the FO is gonna package Ellsbury into a deal to get a front of the line starting pitcher?

I hope not... i love ellsbury (when healthy) slotted in at leadoff i dont think shane victorino in right and an outfield of Gomes/Kalish, Ellsbury, & Victorino is gonna make a boom in ticket sales.

I like the fact that the FO is trying to change the atmosphere in the clubhouse from the chicken and beer to a more upbeat good hearted guys. But still that dont buy us WINS i guess the FO is just looking to have guys who are in a good mood even when losing 90+ games. I hope all the reports are wrong.

Why does this make any sense at all? Would Swisher really cost them that much more?

Swisher is bad at 4 years, but Victorino for that money and length is awful.

Mike Cameron signed for 2 years 15.5.

Shane Victorino is looking at 3 and 38?

Its the same player. Once a great defender, aging and declining. Contact numbers have decreased, power numbers has decreased and his batting eye has diminished.

This is a horrible, horrible signing if it goes through.

Mike Cameron was 37 . Victorino is 32

Its the same player.

Do you like the deal?

If not, what is the point of arguing.?

Same skillset. Same decline.....if anything, it reflects poorly on Victorino, he declined way earlier than Cameron.

Why the hate for Victorino? He's a solid defender, has speed, gets on base (.340 OBP). Looking through his career stats, he appears to be a much cheaper Carl Crawford that switch hits, walks more, and k's less.

His career stats are decent.

Hes been in a decline, and Carl Crawford was a huge mistake, why would they go down that road again?

At 13 million per year, hes hardly a bargain.

My problem is the contract. If we were talking about a 1 year deal, I could care less. This is a bad contract though.

+1 Well stated.

I'm not overall happy with the terms. But victorino is a decent player and adds some speed to this overall slow roster. If Swisher signs for something similar I will be a bit disappointed but calling for Cherries head is hyperbole. It's a meh move, not great, not bad. Not all deals are slam dunks.

Not really liking the AAV, but like the FO has said, they are more worried about years. We have some financial flexibility. Since we have Victorino, I think that counts out Swisher (who costs us a draft pick). Victorino can play all three OF positions. I think that means Cody Ross is still in the hunt. He is cheap compared to Victorino, more power but not as good defensively. If we can resig Ross, our OF will be Gomes, Ells, Ross, Victorino, and one of Nava or Kalish. Not bad at all with Victotino being a switch hitter and capable of playing LF and RF. We really need to focus on SP.

I pray somebody is dumber than Cherington and offers him 4-years.

How can we not be signing Nick Swisher but signing Victorino for nearly the price of Swisher? Swisher is an all around good hitter, with a good on base percentage. He plays mediocre defense, and doesn't have much speed. But when was the last time a team won a lot of games because they had players who stole a lot of bases but who couldn't really get on base in the first place?

CHERINGTON PLEASE DON'T SIGN VICTORINO TO THAT KIND OF MONEY ITS A BAD MOVE!

Victornio is worth about 1-year $5M and anybody who gives him a cent more than that is a moron. 3-years $38M is beyond laughable.

Also the AAV probably got kicked up as reports were multiple 3 years offers and a 4 year. People crush Cherries for not finishing deals, looks like he had to add some AAV to close this one. If it actually happens

You're talking about giving a player in clear decline $12.5M per year?! For 3 years?! So he can hit .255/.321/.430/.770?! Oh but wait he steals 35 bags a year so that's worth it.... NOT

Signing Swisher would give the Yanks our 2nd round pick as they offered him a qualifying contract. Considering how high we're selecting this year, I'd rather not go down that road.

Exactly. Ive been trying to be fair to BC unlike most everyone else around here......but this one is hard to defend.

If Victorino is signed at the expense of signing Swisher......that would be incredibly frustrating. Nick Swisher is the classic mold of the money ball scheme. The lineup is pretty scary when you add a guy like Swisher.

Swisher isn't Josh Hamilton, But we don't need Josh Hamilton.......we need guys who get on base and slug a little. We dont need superstars, but we need more than Shane Victorino.

At least he has speed. Loading up with a bunch of power bats didn't help us last year.

Yeah, because the Sox were full of power bats last season... what team were you watching?

IDK, $13 mil/yr for 3 years of Victorino is so much less exciting to me than 1 year/$13 million for Haren would have been.

Red Sox To Sign Shane Victorino

By Tim Dierkes [December 4 at 4:29pm CST]

The Red Sox remodeling project continued today, as they agreed to terms with Shane Victorino on a three-year, $37.5MM contract. The 32-year-old, a client of John Boggs & Associates, slipped this year to a .255/.321/.383 line for the Phillies and Dodgers, but still did well in free agency. Victorino will play right field for the Red Sox, who previously signed Mike Napoli to play mostly first base, Jonny Gomes to play left field, and David Ross to help behind the plate.

When taking in the draft pick aspect I'm more leaning toward I'm glad they didn't sign Swisher. That and I think he signs for more towards BJ's contract then Victorinos. I hadn't thought about that before my previous post.

I really hope there is something bigger in the works with Ellsbury for a SP. I like Victorino a whole lot more as a CF then a corner OF...
