I heard on MLB radio that BV wouldn't let Aceves on the team plane for the West Coast trip. He had to arrange his own transportation out west. The question is what does this mean for Acevves's future in Boston.

WOW

seems like BV is out there to clean the cancer of the clubhouse and is taking it very seriously. I tip my hat for that to him.

That's why I want him to come back. He has things under control in the clubhouse now.

Aceves is one of their few decent pitchers. The wrong guy to throw in the street.

Valentine made a mistake not communicating with him. He has had all season to exert his authority, and hasn't done it very effectively. Now is the wrong time--on the wrong player.

Maybe the season has finally gotten to Bobby.

No way is this on BV. Aceves knew the situation. He stunk the night before. He isn't a closer. He has blown 7 saves. In any event regardless, Aceves was out of line. There were reasons why New York didn't want him. We now know what they were.

the only thing i dont like about him is rubbing the guys the wrong way. he should have authority over Pedey or anybody in the clubhouse but he needs to earn that as well.

Its mutual.

He let out all of his frustration on that umpire on Sunday.

That’s going to happen from time to time when someone exerts their authority.

Valentine is finally getting the backing of management. V has never been afraid to ruffle feathers and always seems to get the most out of the kids who are just coming up. His motivational tactics seem to piss off the fat cats and finally, the sox moved on from a lot of them. The guys who remain are either untradeable (Lackey) or guys who are smart enough to let it slide off their shoulders. You will see how much of a leader Pedroia actually is come next yr. If he gets into lockstep with Valentine, presuming he is there, you could see a very exciting team full of up and comers.

If they fired Tito because they thought the players had taken over the ship and it was sinking and hired BV to correct the problem then let him. Aceves knew when he got the closing job it was because a player got injuried. I thought it was kind of an unwritten rule that players don't lose jobs because of injuries. I also read that Aceves ripped his jersey off in the bullpen when he didn't get the call to go in. Now if BV didn't communicate with him before the game I can see him being upset, but the whole jersey thing is showing up a teammate, also one of those unwritten rules.

It is possible if not probable that the reason BV didn't notify Aceves before the game was because BV hadn't made up his mind until after he saw how Bailey was pitching. Managers do have the right to change their minds during a game depending on the situation. In any case Aceves antics were worse than unprofessional they were childish.

Aceves is a known hot head. He acted immature and deserved the suspension.

He has been commendable this year stepping up to take on a last second unexpected gap with Bailey going down. Really though he isn't cut out to close, and the numbers this year don't lie. I think he could be valuable in the bull pen next year, but with his attitude problem he might fall into the house cleaning thats taking place.

Pedroia showed some true colors this year with out his safety blanket (Tito) and they weren't pretty. He better fall in line. From Youk to McClure to recent house cleaning, management is clearly on board with V. I hope they lean on him this off season in evaluating the younger guys. All this chatter on WEEI about "2013 no play off rebuilding year" is so terribly ignorant. Being competitive is easily with in reach next year.

Why are sox fans so horny about Farrell? Is it just because peeps in the Tito regime loved him so? Thats clearly not a road to follow. Allows will love the WS rings, but it's been a while since we've won a play off game, and there was way too much bad culture to clean up from Tito/Theo era.

I agree. We have a terrific opportunity to build a strong competitve team for 2013, and the FO knows that there is a sense of urgency to win. They have seen the ugliness of persistent losing. It is damaging the franchise. They are not planning on another bridge year.

As for Farrell, I don't undertand the enthusiasm to hir him as the manager. He has not achieved anything in Toronto. He has his team run recklessly insituation that make no sense. I have seen nothing about him that impresses me.

2013 shouldnt be the goal, though. If they go for a win at all costs attitude for next yr, you're gonna run into the same problems you ran into this yr with contracts being paid out for past performance and a salary cap hell. They need to start making some shrewd acquisitions and maybe push some of their kids a little to see what they can do. If they dont contend in 2013, but the rooks they develop are able to hit their stride in 2014, then you'll be closer to a title. We all know that the guys who will finish this season under contract are more than just 1 or 2 guys away from a title. This sox team is about 5 guys away from a title

Sorry havent read through this whole thread and dont come on as often as I would like but I read the other day Bard would be activated today and rejoin the bullpen and imo where he belongs, but what is everyones opinion on Bard assuming the role he should have when we let Papelbon leave and before we decided to let him try convert to be a starter, and have him be the closer?

Right now I trust Bard in a high leverage situation about as much as I trust Melancon. If he can get his confidence back and thrive, then next year I'd consider him as the setup guy for Bailey. We brought Bailey in to close, it should be his job to lose.

Bard has to prove he can handle major league activity again. If he can get back to where he was at the beginning of last year then he will be able to help the Sox at the end of the game. Until he does that I don't think you put him in any talk about the Sox 2013 closer job. As of right now on a depth chart Bailey still belongs there as closer.

Looks like just another day or two and Melancon is gonna be a real threat for top spot in this poll.

The "someone else" section has a good shot at it too.

Ten bucks says Melancon voted for himself. Aceves voted for "someone else" because he thinks if he can't have the job, then no one should be able to.

Good s*** right there.

Melancon had a 2.85 ERA in 92 innings in the NL. He has a 6.09 ERA in the AL.

If they send this guy back to the NL and he stays there he might be able to have a career.

Can I put in a write-in vote for Andrew Miller? He's shown a lot of improvement this year. He's harnessed his stuff and found the strike zone with it, and that's all he ever needed to do to dominate. I'd guess he could be a sufficient closer, he's got the power stuff for it. That would preserve our other good arms for middle inning work which can be just as important.

I'd particularly like to see Aceves back in the middle inning multi inning role that is so rare in modern baseball. That 2 inning reliever with an ERA in the mid 3's can be a season saver. If Miller can continue to make progress, and Bailey and Aceves are able to back him up, that's a heck of a pen.

Not to mention Breslow, Atchison, Hill (if he can stay healthy,) Tazawa

What the Sox's pen needs is a manager who knows how to use his relievers. They also need the starters to get that "innings per" up over 6 to take pressure off the back end of the game so they don't have to use 4,5,6 pitchers per game. The role players are good, it's just a matter of figuring out who does what well and putting them in a position to succeed.

If the Sox get Bard back to where he was the beginning of last year then Melancon is a chip to trade. He has success in the NL and is not making big $$$$$. He might be able to bring back a useful every day player or a every day prospect that is a 1B or OF.
