It looks like his hamstring problem yesterday was more than cramps.

Sox may be dealing with Middlebrooks injury

Jul 2, 2012 01:28 AM

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff

OAKLAND - Will Middlebrooks looked a little worried after the Red Sox beat the Mariners 2-1 in 10 innings on Sunday. He injured his left hamstring while stealing second base, and the team should have a better understanding of how long Middlebrooks may be out or whether he has a tear.

The Sox would have to use a Nick Punto/Brent Lillibridge combination at third. The team recently signed Andy LaRoche to a minor league deal, but the Sox have a 40-man roster problem, which means they'd have to cut a good player to make room for LaRoche on the roster.

The Sox ideally could use a veteran corner infielder or someone with third base experience. Guys like Ty Wigginton, Mark DeRosa, Adam Kennedy, Brandon Inge, Casey McGehee, Jeff Baker, John McDonald could fit the bill.

The Padres are also said be shopping third baseman Chase Headley, who would be a more significant player.

The Sox are heading to Oakland for a three-game series and Inge, who is currently Oakland's starting third baseman, would seem to be a perfect fit for the Red Sox.

The Sox do have extra outfielders to deal.

This is like announcing that we must use a Saddam Hussien/Slobodan Milosevic combination at our Human Rights conference

Yeah, I wonder where we could possibly find someone like that...?

Guys like Ty Wigginton
Still alive?

Mark DeRosa
Ditto?

Adam Kennedy
Again, how old is this guy

Brandon Inge
Currently tearing it up for the league's premier offense, yeah.

Casey McGehee
The Pirates may not actually be sellers this season

Jeff Baker
Took him out of Coors and suddenly he hits like a guy at his level is supposed to. Which is to say, barely at all.

John McDonald
I love the guy defensively, and for being from Connecticut, but come on. He's good for 2 home runs a year and 30 RBI at best, and he's much more reliable at SS than 3B.

I know it was time for Youk to go to make room for Middlebrooks, and I know this is a minor injury and Will is still the future, but I also knew that getting garbage for Youk wasn't necessarily a given and was going to bite the Sox in the ass. I wasn't asking for Pujols and Verlander for Youk, but Lillibridge could not possibly have been the best player they could get for a guy like Youk.

But we got Lllibitch for insurance. Oh, I forgot. He sucks as an infielder. Let's see if Cherries can make anything happen. Andy La Roche? Puhlease!

It would be great if we could find a team giving away a player like Youkilis. Oh, that would be the Red Sox. I will ask again. What was the burning reason to give away Youkilis. He was given away. Make no mistake about that. Did he threaten to burn down the clubhouse? Why did he have to be moved before the Trading Deadline? Was the deal for Zach Stewart and Lillibitch just too good to pass up? Was that $1 million in salary relief for the 2012 payroll going to make or break the Red Sox 2012 business plan?

Christ. Fingers crossed on this one. This is the last thing this team needs or can stand. The injuries are f***ing rediculous. I mean, it's not getting hit in the face with a pick off move fresh off the DL rediculous, but it's pretty bad.

Also, 1. Turn Middlebrooks into one of those athletes who does yoga and 2. Next offseason start working Daniel Nava out at 1B.

And what was the mad rush to get him out of here? It couldn't have waited until the trading deadline. A little more patience and the problem would have played itself out. Youk would be playing every day and the kid would be DL'd to heal properly. He has gotten a lot of experience this season and Youk would be gone next year anyway, if not sooner, so what the f*** was the rush?

Isn't Iggy injured?

He's listed in the boxscore for yesterday's doubleheader. I think he's been back for about a week.

Calm down people. As far as I know there has been no announcement about the severity of the injury yet. If its a couple of weeks that includes the ASB we can weather that with Ellsbury and Crawford returning-if our pitching holds out. Middlebrooks is young. If its not too serious he will heal relatively fast.

The Red Sox are gping to either hire some new physical therapist people, a new medical staff or change their training methods radically. Whatever they are doing is becoming more disastrous by the month. No team has had the injuries we've had the past two plus years. It simply is not working for us. But I wonder if Prune Face Henry even gives a s*** anymore?

f*** Lillibridge. Send his ass to AAA. I would rather see Ciriaco or Iglesias promoted and play Aviles at 3B. I am not sure about this, but can Ciriaco play 3B? I would not be against trading for a veteran 3B. I just cannot stand to watch Punto or Lillibridge play as an everyday player. We might as well just give the other team an out each time they come to the plate.

I haven't really been paying attention to the Paw Sox this year but Ciriaco is playing 3B for them today, I saw Joe McDonald tweet the lineup (hitting leadoff also)

I just hope they at least give this guy a shot before going after a *sigh* veteran 3B. What do we do with that dude once we've most likely overpaid for him, then Middlebrooks returns...

I would love to see Ciriaco over Lillibridge or Punto at 3B if something is going to keep Middlebrooks out for a while. I am assuming Ciriaco is at 3B because Iglesias is at SS. That is probably to get Ciriaco in the lineup. Maybe it is also to see what he can do at 3B, just in case Middlebrooks is out for a while. I know Andy LaRoche is also an option. I have occasionally followed the Paw Sox some this year, but I do not know how many games Ciriaco has played at 3B.

With all due respect fred ellsbury really hasn't been in the

right place everytime he has gotten hurt. I mean the shot

To the ribs i dont think anyone could have gotten over very

Quickly.

V didnt rule out a DL stint for WMB

I haven't heard anything more about the injury other than that he has a hamstring injury. Anyone got an update? Until then, no need to make any moves at all.

Posted

I'd rather have WMB here for 2 of the 4 games against the Yanks (1 of the DH on Saturday, then the Sunday night game) than to have someone like Andy LaRoche for a couple games against the A's.

Sit him, give him the week off, he'll likely be back by Friday.

from rotoworld

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine hasn't ruled out the possibility that Will Middlebrooks (hamstring) will need a stint on the disabled list.

"He feels better today than he did (Sunday) and better than he expected," said Valentine. "That's the only news we have. It's not discolored and that's good. But it's going to be some days (before he plays). We won't let the calendar dictate; we'll just see how he feels. Maybe (a trip to the) DL, maybe a few days. It's just one of those injuries." Middlebrooks believes he could return to the lineup before the team leaves Oakland on Wednesday, but fantasy owners would be wise to have a backup plan at the ready.

Middlebrooks not in lineup (Punto at 3b) but apparently no DL move coming, either. #RedSoxTalk
