This thread remind me the movie "There will be blood"
That was a dark movie. Daniel Day Lewis played a very dark disturbing character. At the end, he beats to death the phony preacher with a bowling ball.

Hopefully this doesn't end that way.

Bad: Ramiro Mendoza, Edgar Renteria, Matt Clement (due to that vicious line drive), Wily Mo Pena, Julio Lugo, Brad Penny, Joel Pineiro, Mike Cameron,

Good: Mike Timlin, Coco Crisp, Jason Bay, Victor Martinez, Adrian Beltre,

So-so: Keith Foulke, JD Drew

Keith Foulke is a good example of a move that's hard to judge. He was a huge part of winning it in 2004, then a washout after that. So it was not a good value deal, but was it a move that you would make again? I think most Sox fans would say yes.

Yeah, and how was Coco a good signing but Foulke so-so? Makes no sense.

It's all personal opinion. Coco played 1 great season and 2 average seasons. Foulke played 1 great season and 2 mediocre seasons.

Mike Lowell- one of the best especially as a throw in

That deal was made while Theo was in the gorilla suit.

Wasn't the Beckett-Lowell-Sanchez-Ramirez trade made when Theo stepped away for a few months?

The problem with that one is that we don't know if the negotiations were left in advanced stages by Epstein before Gorilla-suit gate.

Epstein stated after the fact that he wouldn't have traded Hanley.

Beckett & Mike Lowell for the trade of Sanchez and Hanley, definitely earned us that ring.. but he wasnt responsible for it.. atleast of what i have heard..

I sure as hell know who gets the phony preacher role, which one of you wants the Daniel Day Lewis part.

DAVID MOTHA f***ING ORTIZ
Two things about the Ortiz acquisition:

First, this thread was intended to address Theo's record signing big money free agents. Ortiz was just released by the Twins and was obtained for little cost.

Second, Pedro was responsible for the Ortiz signing. Ortiz saw Pedro shortly after he got the news that the Twins released him. Pedro called Theo on the spot and strongly recommended that he sign Ortiz. Theo got the jump on the other GMs thanks to Pedro, and he probably signed him as a favor to his star pitcher. Thank you Pedro for Ortiz.

All the title specifies is best and worst signings, by FA or trade. It doesn't say they have to be low cost acquisitions.

I think the point is that the entire league would not have left Ortiz sitting on the scrap heap. Pedro gave the Sox an early warning and an opportunity to get him before the rest of the league got cranked up. He was available for next to nothing. Everybody has next to nothing that they can come up with to spend for a guy and any number of teams would have taken that shot.

I think it is hard to believe we would have ended up with Ortiz were it not for Pedro. Think about that one for minute and when your heart comes back out of your throat take yourself a shot of some good scotch and say a little prayer.
