We really ought to be going after Garza or some other SP of high quality and not putting all our eggs in the DiceK basket. He could easily fail, as could Cook. Its going to be a dogfight in the ALE and we are going to need more high quality SP to compete.

Pettitte sucked balls in his last minor league start and he has owned since coming up. I wouldnt worry about rehab numbers' date=' unless it's velocity or stuff related[/quote']The difference is that Pettitte had been a very reliable pitcher for his entire career. Dice K, on the other hand, has been bad since 2008.

From Cafardo:

Daniel Bard's control issues have followed him into winter ball. The Cubs are expected to keep working with Bard, however, as they can give him a longer leash than the Red Sox did

From Cafardo:

Well Bard's their problem now.....and good riddance with that. Bard reminds me so much of a pitcher the Pirates once had four decades ago by the name of Steve Blass. He was the hero of the 1971 World Series when he won the big 7th Game of that series with the Orioles. All of a sudden with a year or two he couldn't find the plate to save his soul and was soon out of baseball. Looks like the Cubs now have one of those now and we're free of him.

He reminds me of every pitcher who failed at trying to go from a reliever to a starter and failed. Very sad. At least Papelbon changed his mind about going down that road.

Blass had the good sense to retire. Bard is still getting paid so he will stick around until no one pays him.

It'd take a baseball miracle now for Bard to make it back. I'd certainly like to see it, but it's pretty doubtful to say the least.

VA---Papelbon might act goofy at times but he is dumb like a fox. He had it totally wired back in ST 2007 when he called a halt to the starting pitcher experiment and said quite clearly he wanted to be in the bullpen as closer. In fact, I was in Fort Myers right at the time we were first hearing that he was through being a starter and wanted his old job back. Now to be sure, the closer candidates we had didn't look too swift in ST but Paps knew where his future was. Too bad Bard didn't. Of course, Bard started showing signs of serious decline that last month of that forgettable 2011 season, so his problems could have started right there.

Kind of crazy how in 2 years one guy can be an elite player at his position and then suddenly be pretty much out of baseball due to diminished skills

It is, sadly, another Blass-type situation.

he had 9 walks and recorded one out in winter ball. that is absurd. i know for a fact I could do better and I never pitched past high school.
