Anybody watching this Thursday night game, Yanks and O's? You can tell its Playoff atmosphere. The hitters are so amped up that any mistake by the pitchers is getting tagged. The O's just hit three HR's in the 8th after the Yanks got 5 runs in the top of the same inning to tie. O's now back up by a 10-6 score and still no outs in the bottom of the 8th. No assurance the the O's can get through the top of the 9th without damage.

Dlowe on the mound for the yanks now bringing back memories throwing that hard slider.

Did anyone else notice that the Phils and Brewers are only 4 GB of the wild card?
Yes, the Phillies got back to .500 yesterday, and that overpaid closer, whats-his-name, has a win and a save on Sunday and a save yesterday. He sucks. The Phillies, unlike the Red Sox, are making a run.

That's nice, for their fans, but for me it highlights what I don't like about this new Wild Card. A team that's at .500 on Sept. 12 should be cooked.

It's a smart business move by Selig to create more interest for more fans, but it's also a gimmick that over the years will result in some teams just a few games over .500 making the postseason with a chance to win it all.

And I think our FO was counting on that gimmick to keep the 2012 team competitive, but we just were so bad that we couldn't stay competitive since July.

Like the Cardinals in 2006?

It's amazing what having strong starting pitching, and pitchers to close out ballgames can do for you. They were sellers at the deadline, and they still have climbed back into it.

It would be weird if the Phillies make the playoffs after having a semi-fire sale. That would be a first, I believe. Anything can happen now in Bud Selig's Fun House.

The "hot shooter" that is the Baltimore Orioles appear to be on their way to a 15th straight extra inning win. If they hold on, they will be 2 extra inning wins away from tying the all time record set by the 1949 Cleveland Guardians. For the record, that Guardians team was coming off a WS championship (the last time they ever won one) and finished 3rd in the AL behind the NY Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, missing the playoffs. This Orioles team, on the other hand, was almost unanimously picked to finish in last place.

Unbelievable.

Melky Cabrera:

''I ask the Players Association to take the necessary steps, in conjunction with the Office of the Commissioner, to remove my name from for the National League batting title,'' Cabrera wrote in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press.

''To be plain, I personally have no wish to win an award that would widely be seen as tainted, and I believe that it would be far better for the remaining contenders to compete for that distinction,'' Cabrera wrote. ''So too, the removal of my name from consideration will permit me to focus on my goal of working hard upon my return to baseball so that I may be able to win that distinction in a season played in full compliance with league rules. To be plain, I plan to work hard to vindicate myself in that very manner.''

What a classy son of a bitch. Seriously, well played sir.

It buys absolutely no goodwill from me. Somehow I doubt he would feel the same way if he hadn't been caught. He's most likely trying to desperately salvage some sort of dignity after being outed as a user.

If he got away with using and won the title, does anyone honestly think he would release a statement afterwards along the lines of "I won unfairly, so I am turning over the award to the league and submitting myself for punishment."? Nah. He's not sorry he cheated, he's sorry he got caught.

Let's not forget the phony website that he tried to put over on MLB.

True, but he didn't have to do this. A good gesture on his part. Or his agent.
