It is hard to tell if Paps even wanted to return to Boston to pitch.
That's right, but yet so many people are willing to conclude that he didn't want to stay. I guess the allure of the bright lights of Philadelphia was too much to ignore.

A minor league contract "often" leads to becoming 25th man on the roster. What's the definition of often, 5-10%?

Face it, you were wrong.

If someone gets dinged up, the Sox shouldn't run straight to the media. What do they gain by disclosing every player's injuries? All it would do is to increase your blood pressure.

Wake was in for Fort Myers well before he announced his retirement. At his retirement announcement' date=' he did state that he would consider suiting up and coming back in mid-season. Neither retired gracefully. Bobby V stripped the unis off their backs. I don't blame the players for that. Any major leaguer that leaves anything on the field is a fool in my opinion. I respect the players who have the uni torn off their backs. The Red Sox FO signals were just stupid. They should not have had to rely on Bobby V bailing out their asses when camp opened.[/quote']

Cherington showed just what a weak kneed second rater he was when he invited those two to ST and then offered them minor league contracts. Whether he was hoping they would not accept them or whether later he could prevail upon BV to put them on the 25 man roster we most likely will never know, but one thing is plain. Both were interested in still playing and never mentioned that they were retiring until AFTER ST started and AFTER BV made it clear he had no need for them. They most certainly did not retire gracefully UNTIL AFTER it was clear they had no chance to make the team. Also keep in mind that they could have kept playing for some other team but no other team made them an offer of any kind. They had no place to go but home.

700--why the hell are we talking about these two anyway? What does this have to do with giving Bailey an MRI ten days ago?

Because you were wrong, you still are, as shown by the above post, yet refuse to admit it.

As for Bailey, he pitched to minor leaguers a couple days ago. They're just being cautious with him.

So overpaying for more players is the answer?

You either keep overpaying, or you stop. They are trying to stop, yet people still complain.

I'm not sure if they are trying to stop or just waiting to get the right wave to surf in (2013).

Of course they are not trying to stop. They overpaid for Ortiz this year and last year. They just keep making the wrong decisions.

That's a good point, but by that time, we will be able to judge, if they make any major acquisitions, whether or not they overpaid.

There is a set market value for a lot of these players.

Everything I am reading is saying that he may miss opening day. The thumb injury is might not be that serious and like UN said, they are being cautious with him. This is injury prone Bailey's second injury this Spring. They want to make sure he can fully recover so they avoid any reoccurences. Hopefully this is the last injury we have to discuss in regard to Bailey.

It's interesting that UN keeps directing comments toward me even though I don't see his posts. I guess it is probably lost on him that it is impossible to ignore A700Hitter.:harhar:

Bullseye 700---A perfect hit. Still, I like jousting with User since I really like the guy. My blessings come with knowing that there is someone on this board who does not read my posts and I couldn't be more thrilled. We all have our foils 700.

This guy Bailey strained a lat during a physical this spring.

Well, some bad decisions will come off the books in 2013. As Pumpsie and some here said, maybe this is just a bridge year and hopefully they will learn from those bad decisions.

haha, I heard about that. Hopefully this guy spends more time on the active roster this year than the DL. If I remember correctly, someone on the Globe staff did an article about our injuries already before opening day is even here. With Bailey's injury, that means nine guys are now starting the year on the DL. I think our trainers need to recommend Vagisil to some of the players on this team. Injuries are going to be the down fall of this team.

Andrew Bailey returning to Boston to have thumb checked out

FORT MYERS — Closer Andrew Bailey will return to Boston to have his right thumb checked out, manager Bobby Valentine said after today’s 5-1 victory. Until the diagnosis comes in, the team is remaining mum about what it will do about his spot in the bullpen but clearly they are preparing themselves for starting the season without him.

For now, Mark Melancon or Alfredo Aceves are the top choices to close out games.

More later.

It doesn't sound like the Sox are convinced that it is minor.

A "bridge" year , by definition, is a year in which a team has no chances on contending a basically gives up on the season before it even starts.

Do you think the Red Sox can't compete in 2012?

Unfortunately, i couldn't care less about him. I post what i want and respond to what i want. Ignore is for pussies.

Damn, well hopefully things work out for the best for him. These injuries are frustrating. Hopefully it turns out to be better than expected.

So I was proven wrong, so what? You think that bothers me? I'm never afraid to admit it when I'm wrong. The fact is I would have been pissed off to have been proven right. However, stop throwing bouquets at yourself MVP because you were barely right. Both those guys did show up, both were offered contracts and it was Bobby who cut the legs out from under them. So we both wound up happy. Leave it at that.

I do not like how it sounds.

We all knew that Bailey somehow had this handicap... Prone to injuries.

He pitched on Wednesday. Reports say that the reason he hasn't pitched in ML games is because they want to put him on the DL taking advantage of retroactive days. In that case, how serious can it be?

I've been kind of critical this offseason and on paper I think we just have a team to compete at very best for a WC spot.

On the other hand User, call me crazy but I have a good feeling about this team this year. I see a loooong road in the ALE. Even Toronto could be a surprise. IMO this season will be cardiac and very funny to watch.

I wondered if that was the case once I knew he had pitched.

The Red Sox have a very good team. There's simply no disputing that. They'll need a couple things to go their way ,(who doesn't) but this is a team that could go all the way.

Well let's hope that it is not serious. You know as well as I do that we can ill afford to lose our closer for any length of time considering some of the bumpkins we have down there in the pen. And when he gets to Boston give im a damn MRI this time. What the hell is wrong with our medical staff anyway?

Oh yeah... We have a very good team. The thing User is that this season, you have more very good teams on paper than in the past IMO, mostly in the ALE, and some "mid/low" market teams seem to me be very competitive as well.

We need the season starts.

We do need the season to start.

I mentioned this earlier but while there are improvements to teams in the east, my larger concern is that there are now two pretty solid teams in the West that are going to win a bunch of games in my view. While we have grown used to fighting for WC spots with other ALE teams, I think the real problem is that it will be easier to envision the WC team coming out of the West because the West now has two decent teams but is not that strong top to bottom meaning one of those two teams could work its way into the WC easier than the Sox or the Rays for that matter.

Best thing to do would be win the division. That would be terrific!

It has little to do with me patting myself on the back. It's about you going overboard. You ranted all offseason about Tek and Wake for no reason. Now you believe there is some sort of Bailey injury conspiracy. There's not always an underlying mystery and intrigue with every little detail.

Didn't he spend all off-season threatening us about a "rain of hellfire and brimstone" if he and his crew were right about their predictions though?

It just plays into the need to be angry about anything involving the Red Sox. I'd rather just enjoy life than revel in misery and expect the worst around every corner.

Unless you're playing Skyrim. That s*** was just too buggy.
