Interested to see how many years the two sides agreed to for this contract.

Doesn't matter in the end IMHO. It won't be 1 year, and managers get fired all the time.

Surely it will be longer than 1 year. It will still be interesting to see where the two sides ended up. I would surely be surprised if it did not matter to them.

According to Mike Lynch of WCVB-TV in Boston, the Red Sox and Bobby Valentine have reached a "verbal agreement" to become the team's next manager.

We haven't heard anything official from the team, so take this report with a grain of salt for now. The Red Sox continue to say that Gene Lamont is still a candidate for the job and we likely won't hear otherwise until they are ready to make an announcement.

I don't mind him. Should be a good manager

Jesus H Christ. I hope he's a better manager than announcer. Also hope he learns David Ortiz' name.

Are everyone's panties out of a wad now? Probably not, keep on complaining about everything. Let the season play out.

Welcome and good luck Mr. Valentine.

Do we think that the FO will be very influential in the choice of a Pitching Coach? If V gets to make the decision unilaterally, any idea who he might choose?

Dave Wallace.

That's where my betting $ is going.

Why on earth would you think his ability as an announcer somehow correlates with his ability as a manager?

Just more whining......

You bet it's control Sox Sport---and it always has been since that group took over ownership back in 2002. Cherington is just like Epstein in that he wants to control what goes on in the dugout, at least influence it as much as he can. We now know from Francona's own mouth that he and Epstein used to meet EVERY day the team was at home to "go over things". Go over things? How many GM's meet with their manager EVERY day the team is playing at home? You think Madden, LaRussa, Girardi or Scioscia meet with their GM every day they're at home? Francona was exposed as an errand boy way back in late 2004 or early 2005 when O'Nan and King's book "FAITHFUL" was published. Right in there somewhere Francona was quoted as saying "I LIKE IT HERE; I DO WHAT I'M ASKED TO" In other words he did what he was told by Epstein, or Carmine.

Most everyone in the media knew that Francona was little more than a puppet of Epstein and you didn't have to read a book to figure it out, and that is exactly what the front office wants to continue. It's as if they've learned nothing from the last three years of failure and rot. To Lucchino and Cherington those three years are abberations and not the sign of rot deep in the organization, but they are wrong. There are still fans here who say let's wait this out but we have to agree to disagree on that point. The longer we wait the longer we will be wallowing in deep s***.

Ahhh....fred's 2 cents.....was SO waiting for that.....

At least you finally spelled Francona's name properly....it's not FrancoMa and it's not funny or clever. It's ancient. What no "Boy Blunder" references?

Fred, we have been posting this for many many years. Finally we are vindicated. I have some hope that LL has learned his lesson, that a gofer type of manager is as useless as an appendix. That is how Francona will be remembered: Epstein's gofer. Guess the Cards realized that when he was stoned at his interview there.

This hiring will stick in your gullet all year, won't it. Its the right move, the move that needed to be made. In about three years he will be fired, but he will have done the job he was hired to do.

Go Bobby V!

Shut it "Dr. King of Whining and Complaining and Thinking You Know What is Best for the Red Sox"

As you may or may not have noticed....my final line was "Welcome Mr. Valentine" I wish him well and will support him.

You and your Sauxhead friends need to chill a little bit.

No it won't but you possibly might.

I could see the Card interviewing Francona. However don't you think it would be pretty hard for the Cards to go from LaRussa to Tito? I think that would have been an ugly match and the Cards may well have concluded as much as well.

The ONLY reason you welcome him (after being against his being hired, incidentally) is that you think that the Red Sox can do no wrong. Keep waving those pompoms and wearing that pink bonnet. The team needs suckers like you.

According to Karl Ravech (lol what) Gene Lamont is no longer a candidate to be manager. So that only leaves Valentine. Unless there is something going on no one knows of.

On another board someone mentioned that with the Astros' President and GM fired, babbling Brad Mills might be next, and that could mean something I predicted two years ago. That he would fail miserably in Houston, get fired, and find his sorry ass back in Boston. EnFuego, I don't mean to alarm you but if there is anything to this rumor that would be the worst of all worlds. This guy was Francona"s right hand man, a clone to a tee, and a miserable bench coach to boot just as he was a miserable manager in Houston. This is a rumor that I hope has very short legs because it would be a tragedy to the Red Sox if this is indeed that phantom other candidate that some people here are saying is out there.

Keep patting yourselves on the back and high-fiving. Tito will be remembered for being the manager when the Red Sox won 2 WS after an 86 year drought. Far from perfect but 2 WS under his managment isn't bad.

Jung, I may have to delete the previous two posts I entered but I'm elated that we got Bobby Valentine because he is just what we need, the antithesis of FrancoMa, Lamont or Mills. I'll believe it when I see it, or will I if I keep scrolling down on this thread?

You need to step back and shut up. I have been a RED SOX fan my ENTIRE life. I don't like you or your Sauxhead buddies. I am not a pink hat/bonnet wearer. And I have never been banned from any Red Sox forum. Sorry about you and your "knowledgable buddies"

I will not apologize because I tend to see the glass as HALF FULL.

Francona was one of the most over-rated managers in history. He simply did what Epstein told him to do and won 2 WS with players provided to him by someone else, including, in 2004, players mostly from a different GM. He repeatedly made the same mistakes over and over again during games, proving himself to be an incompetent in-game tactician. Although he admittedly managed well during the postseason games, every year his stubborn errors cost his team losses in the double digits. In the end, his players refused to put out for him and refused to accept his authority because, in fact, he had none. He was too busy shielding the misfits on the team from the media to gain control of the clubhouse. The Cardinals saw this and refused to hire him. Had he been as good as some people think he would have been a shoe-in for that job. Guess what: he isn't.

I wish him well, but I am very glad that he is gone.

You may be confusing him with Joe Torre? :dunno:

No, you see it as FULL ALL THE TIME. Your kind agrees with the team regardless of whether or not you think what they did was right.

The Red Sox did it; it must be good.

That pretty much defines a "Bonnethead". Look, you are entitled to behave like that if you want; go for it. But you will catch grief here from those of us who call you on your irrational exuberance.

Francona couldn't wash Torre's shoes.

How many WS and ALC did Torre win with the Yankees?

Hint: its TWICE as many as Francona won with the Red Sox.

Glad I could deliver VA. I also don't know why you still carry that flaming torch for FrancoMa? He was a miserable field manager and I didn't use FrancoMa for comedy effect. I used to show his ineptness as a manager and the fact that he was little more than a errand boy for Blunder. If you needed proof on that you only had to see how the Cardinals shined your Tito on when they rejected him out of hand for manager and chose instead a person who never managed ANYWHERE before.

As for Valentine, it might stick in your craw but you will see a different Red Sox team out there next season, and there will be no beer guzzling in the clubhouse during games, nor any sending out for fried chicken. He also will be in charge of making out the lineups and using our offensive weapons to the fullest because he is a terrific game manager.
