Lovullo out and it's down to two

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff November 28, 2011 05:10 PM

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff

A few minor updates on the managerial situation:

• A team source says that Torey Lovullo has been eliminated from consideration.

• It will be either Gene Lamont or Bobby Valentine. No mystery candidate (John Farrell, Brad Mills, etc.) is in the running. So expect Lamont or Valentine to be named by the end of the week.

---------------------------------------

Oooohh! Lovullo is out of the running. What a stunnong development. What next, Dick Williams is ruled out?

Barney Frank announced today that he will not seek another term in Congress. Perhaps he is the dark horse candidate we have all been waiting for.

Breaking News- Torey Lovullo is out of the running for the vacant Red Sox managerial post. Johnny Pesky is rumored to have declined the post, because his actuarial life expectancy of 6 months would be unlikely to get the team through the 2012 campaign. Pesky is said to have recommended his 75 year old grandson for the position.

Because some people need a reason to bitch and moan, and others need to demonstrate that they think they know the internal workings of the Red Sox FO.

#1 is bad, #2 is laughable.

You have trouble discerning what is laughable. To me, its laughable that the FO cannot make a decision despite knowing all of the available candidate for several weeks now. The interviews have been completed, the candidates are unchanged, and still they cannot make up their dysfunctional minds.

Thats laughable.

kind of hard to believe Cherington and the FO seem to be split between Lamont and Valentine...well' date=' maybe it does happen often, i just feel both parites should actually want the guy they plan to hiire...last thing you want is your manager smack in the middle of a GM-FO spat...i think you guys will be right there no matter who the skipper is...[/quote']

I agree Jete. The question is how many years it will take to get "right there". Two or three is my guess.

I heard that Barney was interested in the openings left by the dismissed assistant coach at Syracuse.

He is also interviewing at Penn State.

Yeah, pretty stunnong!;)

With so many folks so worried that a manager hasn't been hired, I was mainly pointing out that a decision should be made by the end of the week. But people's panties will still be in a wad.

And the deadline for Theo's compensation was November 1st.

Do you not see how dysfunctional this makes our FO look? The candidates are the same; they have all been interviewed. It makes the FO look indecisive and fragmented. Thats exactly what they do not need right now. Perception is everything, and the perception people hold of our FO now is deteriorating daily. Read the posts here, at least some of them. Sometimes if others tell you that you problems being decisive it influences your future decisions. This is a mistake. The manager should have been hired last week at the latest.

Fegler and Mazz went on another tirade about this issue. No serious observer can expalin the Red Sox FO's inaction, even the announcers on MLB radio are taking their swipes at how screwed up the Red Sox look.

So did you get this by being part of some of the meetings of the FO? Or is this just assumption, as everything else said on the site?

You don't know the inside workings of the Red Sox Fo. Pretending otherwise is laughable, meaning that you have trouble discerning what is laughable, not me.

No amount of media crap is going to replace the fact that only the Red Sox FO know the inside workings of the Red Sox FO. This is common sense.

Why is this "are you in the front office" defense pulled up every single time? So damn lame. Why don't you offer something up with a little thought? If you want more than assumptions and opinions on an issue then get off a message board and get a job in the organization.

Seriously though, how is it not bad that the organization has had the candidates interviewed and in place for a long time now, but no decision has been made? It just doesn't look good. After a collapse as large as this you'd think they'd show some urgency and make a statement, but nope. They've sat around letting time pass. Why would a free agent want to go to manager-less team and a team that seems to be having internal issues?

Actually the longer this has taken the less I am thinking that it is actually an issue of trying to decide between these two guys. For one thing they are to dissimilar to make it likely that they would have made it to the top of the heap together. Second, if we are actually to believe that Lamont is Charington's preferred and Bobby V is LL and JH's then that means that Bobby ranks no higher than 3rd on BC's list and in reality probably ranks even lower than that. That is getting close to unrealistic.

I have thought for awhile now that one element of this is that Bobby V did not wow them in the interviews like they thought he would. I am inclined to think that at this point the Sox are leaving Bobby and Lamont out there as the public face of the manager effort while behind the scenes looking at an alternative to both of them. I don't believe we will see more interviews or more pressers from candidates. I think we will suddenly just get an announcement of the new Boston Manager, someone other than V or Lamont.

Maybe they are waiting on drug test results that they felt were necessary after finding out that both Lamont and Valentine are Facebook friends with Ron Washington.

Maybe after all the criticism directed at the medical team they are going over the results of their physicals with a fine tooth comb. Maybe some of the results are giving them cause for concern. Tests probably revealed that Valentine has a badly inflated ego and a dangerously sharp tongue. Lamont probably has a personality disorder in that it lacks any pigment whatsoever. They are probably also having a lot of difficulty getting any readings on Lamont's head xray.

Agree. It doesn't look good at all from an outside-in perspective. A lot of time has passed and any move yet.

As I said, and beyond the time that has passed, I'd hope that they have at least a plan or a strategy to face this 2012 offseason; the thing is, that the more I read the more my concerns grow and grow in our moving forward to fill our several holes which IMO are more important than the manager or Theo compensation.

Then tell me something concrete from the FO's line of thinking that isn't strictly assumption and is not fueled by media ********. I'll wait/

I've said before what i think, i think they should take their time regardless of what the fans, who are fans, not FO members, or the media, who is just media, think.

Fans were killing Tito all the time, so now that they're looking for a good in-game tactician and taking their time, fans are killing the FO.

You know why? Because fans are fickle. That's why the FO needs to make the right decision, no matter how long it takes.

In fact, i argue this: Because of the magnitude of the collapse, they need to find the right guy. If they f*** this up, they will feel the fan and media rage, and they will deserve it.

I don't see how that position is unreasonable.

Exactly. Outside perspective. From fans. Who know nothing about running a baseball team. You don't know what they're doing and neither do i, but assuming that they're sitting on their thumbs is not logical.

Reports come out of them pursuing, scouting or going after players, but the whiners choose to ignore this reports. It's dishonest.

Sure, everyone is entitled to an opinion. But it's just that, an opinion. Don't paint it as fact, because it isn't.

Show me where I claimed to know what is going on in the FO. You also have problems reading, I guess.

Frankly, I could not care less what is going on in the FO. I care that the team is successful, and the adverse publicity it is receiving diminishes the chances of future success. Thats the bottom line. A team that looks silly (ie is "laughable"), dysfunctional, and indecisive will not look good to free agents who might be considering joining the team. They might still join if the price is higher than it otherwise might be. Thats only ONE example of how this ludicrous behavior hurts the team. For contrast, look at the Patriots. Players join that team at a discount because they have their s*** together.

Try thinking before you post what you consider "laughable" in the future.

How do you know they haven't made up their minds and we're merely on a formality stage?

That's an instance of "i know what's going on". Remember Tito? They chose him mid-November but announced him early December.

Problems communicating from you instead of reading from me perhaps?

Excuse me iOrtiz. Can you you use your extensive business knowledge to read the mind of the FO so we can know what they're thinking? :D

I'm business consultant not magician my friend

I'd tell you the same thing. You've done nothing but regurgitate media babble and the thoughts of your clique. What a hypocrite. Read my thoughts above. They are mine and mine alone, no clique or outside help needed.

Still waiting for you to show me where I said that I attend Sox staff meetings or that I KNOW what is going on in the FO...

What I DO know is that a manager has not been named. Thats the bottom line. Thats ALL any of us know for sure. They are the laughing stock of the media now. They APPEAR dysfunctional and indecisive. Read the link below from Shaughnessy if you don't believe me. You don't think players read some of this stuff? You don't think a team gets a reputation, positive or negative? Do you think this sort of stuff helps us out when it comes to APPEARING professional?

I don't care if they have already decided; they should have already ACTED and named a manager in a prompt and expeditious manner. The longer they wait, the more LAUGHABLE they appear.

I have been posting this opinion LONG before it became fashionable.

IMO they ownership group is just digging its hole even deeper.

Despite the fact that your business knowledge is unsurpassed on this forum, you remain humble. I, on the other hand, would have claimed to be all-knowing and offered an opinion.
