Theo asked for Montero and Banuelos for Garza' date=' lol[/quote']

When you're a big market team with a cost controlled pitcher, you don't need to trade him unless blown away. Especially to a team that made your life miserable for ten years of your life

Yankees Fail To Reach Deal With Hiroyuki Nakajima

By Mike Axisa [January 5 at 11:29am CST]

The Yankees and Hiroyuki Nakajima have failed to reach an agreement, the team announced. New York won the negotiating rights to the 29-year-old infielder with a bid around $2MM last month.

“We unfortunately could not come to an agreement with Hiroyuki," said GM Brian Cashman in a statement. "We wish him the best of luck during the upcoming 2012 season.”

This had been predicted in an earlier press report.

The Yankees will be meeting soon to talk about the budget. They might increase it, it stands at about $206 million right now. Red Sox stand to have about a 182 million payroll. We need to keep our Evil Empire name, so lets spend some money!

The Yankees are talking to Edwin Jackson, if we could spin a one year type deal that the Reds got with Madson, say one year 12 million for Jackson, I'd be down or even 2/20.

Wishful thinking.

If the Yankees sign someone it will be only on a one year deal. They're preparing for Hamels, much like they did for CC in 2008.

I wouldnt be surprised if he does that. Jackson had a good yr, but is coming off a pretty rocky track record. If he can put up another big season, he'd be a pretty attractive option next offseason.
Posted
I don't think so. This offseason, he has leverage. Next year he has to compete with Hamels, Cain, Greinke, Marcum, Floyd, Haren, E. Santana, Shields, Baker, Sanchez, Lewis. Half of those players will be off the market by 2013, but even if half of them are still available, would you really give 50 million to Jackson, when those options are available?

I don't see the Rays paying 9 million for anyone. The Angels will likely be short on cash and let one of their pitchers go. Either way, they'll probably all be available by trade.

If he repeats his 2011 performance, he'd be worth a lot more than $9 million.

The Rays are paying close to that for Shields this yr. And the Angels will absolutely keep Haren.

Point is-- pitchers who throw 4.50 in the AL and 4.00 in the NL are not elite players. At no point will he get the 5 years that they're throwing around.

With the DH spot opened up now, we have a few options...

Staying put so to say, A-Rod and Jeter getting rest at DH with Jones getting some time as well.

Signing Fielder.

Signing Pena

Shipping AJ out for a bad contract, Soriano of the Cubs and Carlos Lee of the Astros come to mind.

Jorge Vazquez being called up and given a legit shot.

Then there's always Manny Ramirez(I don't like that at all but it's an option I guess)

What do you think will happen, what would you like to see happen? I'd personally go for dumping AJ for Lee or Soriano if the Cubs covered the difference in money. Also wouldn't mind Pena coming aboard, he'd destroy in Yankee stadium.

I don't think the Yankees will be in on Fielder. Having Texieria, Fielder, and A-rod to split time between 1B/3B/DH seems like a collosal waste, especially considering that whatever they pay Fielder is essentially multiplied by 1.5x. Is Fielder worth 35 million a year to DH for six years?

Hold the phone... Woah. Yankees and Royals are talking trade right now. The frame work of the deal seems to be Billy Butler to the Yankees and Hughes to the Royals.

The latest hot stove rumor has the team making a move to acquire Billy Butler from the Kansas City Royals. Butler is just 25 and has played in nearly 700 games, but it's his run production that interests New York the most. With 74 career home runs and 185 doubles in a spacious park like Kansas City, those numbers would increase 10–15% in a hitter friendly park like Yankee Stadium.

The New York Yankees have dominated Major League Baseball's headlines lately for their free agent signing of Hiroki Kuroda and trade for Michael Pineda in recent days. Now they might be at it again for a potent bat to add to their line-up. The latest rumor on the Interwebs has the Kansas City Royals dealing Billy Butler to the Yankees in some deal that includes young pitcher Phil Hughes of the Yankees.

Billy Butler has been deemed the best trade asset of any of the Kansas City Royals hitters for some time now for several reasons. He's very experienced as an ML hitter yet he's only 25 years old. He's also quite affordable at $8 million for 2012 and signed through 2014 with a club option for 2015. For the Royals, however, he could be termed expendable since he's the team's most expensive player and yet he's also their designated hitter. Those two things generally should not go together for a small-market team like the Royals.

As for Butler, he'd give the Yankees a .300 hitter with solid gap power that would play well in Yankee Stadium. The Royals on the other hand would take on Hughes, who is the same age as Butler. Hughes took a step back last year yet is still considered one of the better young pitchers in the American League. Yet back problems persisted last year and the recent acquisitions leave him likely out of the starting rotation for the Yankees. Both players have their cons and yet both players also fit the needs for the team receiving him.

Everything is conjecture at this point, but it's an interesting rumor to say the least. If anything, it's a spark of Royals news in a dead period of the off-season.

I would have to assume it's more than Hughes, as anyone would. It's hard to gauge what the Royals would be looking for but Hughes, Betances and maybe a lower prospect with a decent ceiling would work. Inserting Butler in the lineup would be within our budget and would cut down on our SP depth, but we'd still have either AJ or Freddie in the wings as well as Warren, Phelps, Banuelos and Mitchell.

Edit: this was also in a KC newspaper I believe yesterday.

It wouldn't be Betances. Hughes looked very good at season's end, so I'd be hesitant to give them much more. Maybe Warren or Phelps would be sufficient. Remember, he can hit, but he's an $8 mil DH, so his worth has its limits.
Posted
Maybe you're right. I'm not the biggest Betances fan so maybe I undervalue him. Getting Butler would mean expanding the budget by 3 million(given we have 2 million to spend and Hughes is making 3.2 million next year so hopefully we can get it done. I wouldn't expect any type of moves until the Montero-Pineda swamp is official though.
Posted
Betances has Pineda stuff without the consistent command. I like Betances a lot, but due to his size, it takes awhile to tighten up the delivery. Don't throw him around as fodder for role players. He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn last yr and still nobody could hit him. Another yr of adjustments could see him elevate his game to elite.

If Butler to the Yankees happens' date=' I will vomit. What the hell does Benny Boy have in the works? Does he have anything in the works?[/quote']

I doesn't appear to look that way. I honeslty believe despite what happened last year, the Red Sox were in a better position not to make too many major moves. The Yankees pitching going into the offseason was in no way sustainable, and they HAD to make a few moves.

The Red Sox still have a great (when healthy) 1-3 combo with Lester, Beckett and Clay. Now move Bard to the rotation and make some decent bulpen signings and you still have a pretty strong pitching staff.

As far as offense goes, AROD looked terrible last year and may be falling off a performance cliff... Jeter is 38 this year and even Tex is getting to his low to mid 30's. The only sure bet to repeat last years performance is Cano. Granderson will be good, but I doubt highly that he repeats last years performance.

The Red Sox still have AGONZ (29), Pedroia (28) and Ellsbury (28) all in their prime. I said early it stands that Granderson comes down, and Carl Crawford should go WAY up.

Bottom line, even as terrible as last year ended the Yankees were still in worse position heading into 2012 and had to make moves to counter that. I still look at the overall talent level on both teams after these latest yankees moves and call it a wash. Sure the sox need a few things to break there way, but I honestly think they will.
