Wow this is surprising. To be honest it's probably not what I would have done, but it's exciting. It's a huge contract, probably more than he is worth and it will probably be ugly in years 5-7. But this team is going to very good and very fun to watch in the next few years.

And of course, the lineup projections. This is kinda tough.

Ellsbury

Pedroia

Crawford

Gonzalez

Youkilis

Ortiz

Drew

Saltalamacchia

Scutaro/Lowrie

There's no more L/R balance, so how would you make it?

NOOOOO.

Crawford or Pedroia will lead off.

Elssbury hits 9th.....if hes still with the team.

I absolutely cannot disagree with this.

We're all glad you're happy a700. You deserve it.

Now we can both rejoice in how much we like Theo and this FO, huh?

I've always said that on the whole the FO does an excellent job. I also said after the miserable end of last season that I expected bold things from the FO this off season. AGon was great, and that was enough for many, but I felt that there was another shoe to drop. I preferred Crawford over Lee, but if they wanted to close the gap on the Yanks, one of those moves had to be made. If the Yanks landed them both we'd be playing for second place. It will be fun to watch Crawford and Ellsbury run down balls in the gap and play running bases with old man Posada. It should be a lot of fun.

And let this be a reminder to all of you:

A700 is almost always right.

I agree with SCM. I hate the contract but Crawford is a good player.

Crawford hitting 3rd? Why?

This. Crawford is good, but Jesus, 20 mil is ridiculous. 20 mil should be the price of someone like Crawford, but who hits 30 home runs.

Common sense bro.

Right. Common sense dictates that paying a 36 year old shortstop with an average glove and average bat $17 million a season just because he's THE CAPTAIN is a much better move than paying $20 million a season to a 28 year old OF that hits for average, steals 50+ bases, and plays legitimate gold glove defense. Can't believe I missed that.

I HATE the contract.

But I am excited that they front office has gone out and shown to all of us that they WILL pay the money.

Couple questions.....what does this mean for Ellsbury and does this mean that there are other moves coming down the road?

They are STILL wayyyyy too LH happy.

Is there any chance that Ellsbury is traded to NY for Beltran?

a700 treatment for you too.

To me, this means a couple players days in Boston are numbered.

I think Lowrie, Ellsbury and Kalish all have the chance to be part of a deal for Beltran now.

You pretty much explained why it's poor logic. Just because player a is vastly overpaid does not mean player b should make more.

lmao. You're such an idiot.

Derek Jeter is extremely overpaid.

I agree. My point though was that everyone seems to gloss over his contract and go apeshit over this one, even though it makes way more sense to overpay for a player for Crawford's ability than it does to do it with Jeter. The only thing he offers the Yankees right now is sentimental value to the fans and leadership in the clubhouse. Neither of those two are worth $17 million a season.

Crawford on the other hand offers a hell of a lot more and then some. He makes our team better on countless levels. And that's all that really matters to me.

While Jeter's deal is definitely worse than Crawford's, that doesn't mitigate the fact that Crawford's deal may or may not also be a bad deal. Comparing the salary to Jeter's doesn't accomplish anything.

This officially puts Anaheim in position to steal Lee from the Yankees.

On the other side, it motivates the Yankees to go even harder for Lee. I don't think the Yankees sit and watch the Sox get the two best position players of the offseason and do nothing.

It doesn't ever really make sense to overpay, ever. Unless you have no limits, like the Yankees.

What does this mean for Ellsbury?

There is no way they begin the season with 3 LH bats in the OF and 1 LH bat at 1B and DH.

Carlos Beltran, Im telling you, thats the next brick to drop.

Memo to a700:

You don't get to bitch, whine and moan about anything, they went out and got A-Gon (and you managed to bitch about that too) now they got your guy.

Your bitching and moaning rights are hereby revoked.

Hell no!!! I'm holding Theo's feet tot the fire to build a decent bullpen. I judge the moves as they come. Theo usually gets it done, but he's on probation on the bullpen issue. I am sorry that the fanboys can't take it when I criticize some of his moves. I can't believe that some of you are bothered by the financial terms of this deal. Ticket prices are set for 2011 and they go on sale on Saturday. They will be tough to get. Is he overpaid? Everyone that sets foot on the field for the Sox is overpaid, so why complain about this guy. Your GM just got you one of the premier talents in the game. Be happy. Show him the love.

Memo to Angels and Rangers: Sign Cliff Lee!

That way i can have my keg party with my strippers, my foam machine and my jello shots.

It does because Jeter's is a known entity. There is no getting around how stupid the Yanks are for giving him that kind of coin.

We won't know if Crawford's contract is a bad one until we've seen him play over the course of multiple seasons. Risking $20 million a season on him is a much better proposition than giving a 36 year old Jeter $17 million a season.

Love this move. Crawford had a 5.7 and 6.9 WAR in the last two years respectively. I have to believe the Red Sox think he's that level of player for at least the next 4 years and a 3-4 WAR player in the years following that.

He's a game changer. Awesome speed, defense, and contact hitting abilities. I assume he'll hit leadoff, which would give the Sox an unbelievable 1-4 and a very good back end of the lineup.

Also with Drew coming off the books next year, the Red Sox don't want to be stuck trying to fill two major corner OF spots and Crawford is probably by far the best FA option that will be available in the next couple years.

Ellsbury is definitely expendable. Beltran depends on how much salary the Mets eat, I'd think.

You mean sign two relievers to round out the bullpen? Sure to happen.

Oh, and evaluating and bitching are different things. Just sayin'.

Who says we have limits? John Henry has been sitting on a goldmine for years with this club. It's about time he spends some money to make them better.

As a fan, I really don't give a f*** how much money it takes to sign these guys. Especially considering the kind of money the Sox make every year off me and countless other fans. Just get it done and field a legit WS contender.
