Gonzalez and Cameron will play the numbers game for 23

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff December 6, 2010 05:29 PM

Adrian Gonzalez wore No. 23 in San Diego. But he put on a jersey that was blank on the back when he was introduced today at Fenway Park

Gonzo wants No. 23 in Boston, too. But that the property of Mike Cameron and under the unwritten rules of baseball etiquette, he is under no obligation to give it up.

"I have 15 years in this league," Cameron said by phone from his home in Georgia. "They can't just take it from me."

But Mike is a reasonable fellow. He didn't even want 23, having worn 25 or 44 for most of his career. But Mike Lowell had 25 and wanted to keep it and Cameron didn't want to take 44, knowing that Jason Bay had worn it in 2009.

"That would have just started trouble," he said.

Now Cameron is willing to take 44 and give up 23 to Gonzalez. But there will have to be a little tribute.

"He's going to have 160 million ways to make me happy," Cameron said, laughing. "No, that's not me. I'll have him make a little donation to the Boys & Girls Club."

Cameron and Gonzalez played together in San Diego from 2006-07. Cameron predicts big things for the first baseman at Fenway Park.

"It's a perfect park for him because he can go to the other way or go down the line in right," Cameron said. "The guy is an all-around good player and he's going to make a big difference for us."

Cameron is glad the trade got done now as opposed to during the season.

"Now AG gets all winter and spring training to settle in and that's important," he said. "Plus we open up on the road. So by the time we get to Boston and he's dealing with the expectations, he'll have some games under his belt."

Cameron believes Gonzalez will make a smooth transition to the clubhouse as well.

"He's quiet but he's friendly, like Jason Bay," Cameron said. "People like him and he's bi-lingual, which helps. I think he's going to do fine."

Cameron said he "as close to 100 percent" as he can get after having surgery in August to repair the torn abdominal muscles that sidetracked his first season in Boston. A right-handed hitter with power, Cameron could play a key role for the Red Sox in 2011 in the outfield and as a DH.

Ok. We get it. Some of us overreacted last night. No one more so than me. I've explained it and I am certainly willing to admit it was a knee-jerk reaction, that I was wrong, and to "eat crow", whatever that may constitute in this case.

Can we move on?

Not attacking anyone. Just trying to make someone put their money where their mouth is. He told me he was a deadbeat by saying that he wouldn't pay up on the bet. That is the definition of a deadbeat. I take back the no balls comment. I was just trying to goad him into the bet. I like betting action. Can't help myself. I understand that most people don't have the spine to put themselves on the line with those things.

Why don't you just drop it already? BSN07 is a great member of this forum and he has a lot to add/share and thank gawd he is one of the more positive posters out here. He was obviously joking with you the whole time but you have to turn into an ass and call him a deadbeat (way to "man up" and take back the no balls comment).

I'm sure we're all glad that you like betting action and have the spine to put yourself on the line with those things. But not everyone does for various reasons that are none of your or my business. Chill out.

I repeat' date=' we just got Adrian Gonzalez. One more time, we just got Adrian Gonzalez. What on earth does anyone have to fight about?[/quote']

I apologize and will drop it.

I am so excited about the Sox getting Adrian Gonzalez!! He's is going to be a huge contributer to the team. Great move by the FO. Looking forward to other moves that will make the Sox contenders in 2011. Getting A-Gon is SO huge!!:thumbsup:

Just saw this mentioned on Twitter:

From ESPN Blog: Gonzalez is Good, but He's no Beltre

The wonders of statistical analysis. A lot of it makes sense, but I can't agree that Youk will be bad at third.

I'm with you Youk has been and will be fine at 3rd again. I love Beltre but he produced during a contract year. There is no room for him with the Sox anymore and he will be missed. I hope he'll get a great deal and am sure he will.

They do realize A-gon came in 4th for MVP in the NL last year' date=' despite hitting in petco with that lineup, right?[/quote']

Probably not

That kind of common sense would give them less material to "Twitter" with :D

Gonzo has a rooting interest in Foxboro

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff December 6, 2010 07:39 PM

Had to pass this nugget along, courtesy of Globe colleague Mike Vega:

Adrian Gonzalez is headed to the Patriots-Jets game tonight and he told Mike that he picked up Danny Woodhead for his fantasy team.

Just another reason for Boston fans to love him.

Cameron is at least close to right. The 2010 Beltre was monstrous, and regardless of Youk's quality at third (which the writer underestimates), Youk is not as good as Beltre at third, and the same could be said of A-Gon and Youk at first. A-Gon's bat will probably end up being better, but it's not exactly clear-cut that a 2011 A-Gon is better than a 2010 Beltre.

However, this is obviously not the relevant decision that the Sox had to make. A 2011 A-Gon will be better than a 2011 Beltre, given a lot of the luck that Beltre had in his 2010; and a 2011-2014 A-Gon will definitely be better than a 2011-2014 Beltre.

So looking on the bright side: AGon and his agent go back on their word, we have one year of AGon plus two picks for three prospects. That's not terrible.

And before anyone jumps on me, I'm not saying this will happen, just that we have some protection if it does.

I doubt that it happens, think signing Crawford is more likely (if anyone wants to make a small wager with me). If he does, though, the status of the picks might change if they alter the CBA next year.

Sorry if this was already posted, but it's damned funny:

Not only did the Red Sox acquire a three-time All-Star and a two-time Gold Glove winner in Adrian Gonzalez, they also acquired a pretty good actor.

How's this for a nice-to-meet-ya:

While Gonzalez was in Boston for his physical examination over the weekend, he was at dinner Friday night with some Red Sox executives when, from across the restaurant, came a familiar face to greet him.

It just so happened that Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury was having dinner in the same restaurant.

Ellsbury approached the Red Sox table and congratulated Gonzalez on coming to Boston.

Without missing a beat, Gonzalez smiled, accepted the congratulations -- and then congratulated Ellsbury.

"And my place is going to be open, so if you need a place to stay in San Diego, let me know," Gonzalez deadpanned to Ellsbury.

According to a Padres executive, who had been briefed by their Red Sox counterparts, Ellsbury momentarily froze ... before he was assured that no, he was not headed west to San Diego as part of the trade.

Everyone was said to have gotten a big laugh -- including Ellsbury.

And then, presumably, Gonzalez, who is expected to receive a seven-year deal worth $23 or $24 million a year sometime around Opening Day ... picked up the check? No official confirmation on that part of the evening.

Alex Speier' date=' Pete Abraham, and Gordon Edes were very level headed throughout the near-fiasco yesterday. Speier knew it was all about luxury tax before the extension negotiations had even started.[/quote']

Right. I didn't think WEEI was up to that level of analysis.

I imagine they probably arrived at some numbers the first part of the meeting, then had a few drinks until 2 pm.

Watching Millar and Ozzie Guillen on MLB.com. Hilarious. Guillen saying some nice things about Boston and the fans.

Off-topic: Patriots 45 Jets 3, final.

From today's Globe:

The Sox and Boggs still needed to craft an extension, though, which was proving problematic. Boggs reportedly wanted an eight-year deal for as much as $180 million. The Red Sox [team stats] reportedly held firm at six years and $120 million.

A 2 p.m. deadline on Sunday came and went, and the parties prepared to disperse: Boggs and Epstein to the winter meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Gonzalez to New York with his wife.

Then Boggs got a call at his hotel. The Red Sox wanted to reopen talks and felt the two sides had built enough trust to move forward. For his part, Gonzalez desperately wanted to play for the Red Sox.

The call probably came right after Werth signed. That would be my best guess.

This guy Boggs is a good negotiator. Publicly, it seems that the Red Sox have already come up $40 million to 8yrs/$160 million. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes higher.

you just love this Boggs guy don't you? He's the next Boras right?

I don't know, I think the Sox 6/120 offer was simply them lowballing him. They must have known they needed to do much better, and that was just their low bid. Its called haggling haha
