With a 12 man pitching staff and 5 starters, there'd be 7 relievers, with one of them being Wakefield. Still, I wouldn't mind getting Dan Wheeler to make our bullpen even better, but with Papelbon, Bard, Jenks and a halfway decent lefty (other than Doubront), I think we'd have a pretty good bullpen, and one that's good enough to start the season.

Yeah-- it completely sneaked up on me, but the Sox need one more reliever and their 25 man should be done. Sad to see such an incredible offseason come to and end... unless they have another big move?

Doubt it, I'd imagine that a big move (like a trade) could create more holes which would have to be filled later. That said, I'd love to get Fuentes and Wheeler, but the only thing I think we need is a serviceable LOOGY. But I'd rather have Wheeler than Atchison or Wakefield, but that's my preference. I trust that Theo will make the right moves to put us in good shape for when the season starts.

I like Rich Hill as a dark-horse candidate for lefty specialist. He's held lefties to a .687 OPS during his career (mostly as a starter) and could probably be more effective on a relief role limiting his exposure versus righties.

I also like Andrew Miller's potential if he can ever get that wildness under control.

Alex Spier of WEEI claims the Sox are done pursuing Fuentes, but Wheeler is still a possibility.

Also, congrats to our old friend Bill Hall who is getting a starting job with the Astros. Well-deserved!

Yeah, I was almost certain that we weren't going to get Fuentes. I really liked him but I figured he'd cost too much. I agree on Bill Hall though, congrats on the starting job, even if it is with the Astros.

We may need to have someone pay a visit to Wakefield to tell him that it is time for him to take a hot bath and open a vein. Maybe he can succeed Mike Andrews at the Jimmy Fund. I don't like Wakefield or Miller in the pen.

It's a shame because I wanted him to reach 200 wins before he retired.

It seemed like I always saw Wakefield pitch when I'd go to Fenway. I told my son that my nightmare scenario was that in 20 years at age 70, I'll be at a game where 65 year old Wakefield will be trying for his 300 win after averaging 5 wins for the last 20 years of his career and Mirabelli will be going for 200 HRs after hitting 2 a year for 40 years. He's got to go. It'll take him 3 - 5 years to get to 200 wins.

Hmm wow' date=' I didn't think it would have been that recent. The main reason I asked (other than an argument with a Yankee fan friend of mine) is because I wanted to see if Theo was really that much against being in the luxury tax bracket, and whether or not such a "cap" would prevent us from signing someone like Dan Wheeler or Brian Fuentes and the RH bat we could use off the bench.[/quote']

I think they use it as a guideline IMO. They would like to be under it. But when they go over they don't seem to mind just as it's not a lot. This will cost billionaires a couple million most likely. Not a huge deal. They sill make plenty. I don't expect them to ever fork over their complete profit margin to field a winner. I think that's really what separates them from the Yankees. They will spend big money, but not to the affect where they make little no $.

He still sucks [/Dipre baiting]

You're such a f***ing idiot.

No one defended the Hall acquisition on this board more than me.

Anyways, why don't you try actually adding something to the discussion for once instead of glittering, gay vampire?

That's the problem-- the Yankees profit just happens to be massive' date=' so it would take a much larger amount for them to be making nothing.[/quote']

Yankees project to make just over $600 million this year and they hide a lot of money in the YES Network and newly formed Legends INC books, so they could of easily made $700 million or even more from last year, factor in $300 million for the entire payroll(players, luxury tax, FO, scouts, etc) and then paying back part of their loan for the stadium. Also revenue sharing and they made alright money but their real money comes from the YES Network.

I can't wait for Twilight to respond to this one. The gauntlet has been thrown. It really is Edward vs. Jacob.

I don't trust Wakefield or Paps any longer - time to move on.

Last three years for Wheeler:

2008: 3.12 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 7.2 K/9, 142 ERA+, 4.49 FIP, .202 BABIP

2009: 3.28 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 7.0 K/9, 133 ERA+, 4.48 FIP, .203 BABIP

2010: 3.35 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 8.6 K/9, 118 ERA+, 4.11 FIP, .243 BABIP

Consistently low BABIP the last three years, so hopefully that continues as opposed to reverting to the mean. His career BABIP is .285. Bill James projects a 2.87 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 8.04 K/9, 4.19 FIP and .255 BABIP.

He's not the primary setup man or even the secondary setup man, so I'd say this is a good deal. It seemed the Sox were not very interested in Fuentes or at least the money and years required to get him, so I'd rather get a quality righty than a mediocre lefty.
