Are they bringing Miller in for the BP or is he still trying to be a SP?

He won't be a starter, he would have went somewhere else if that's what he wanted.

He sat low 90's for the most part when he he was a starter. I guess you could expect they typical 2MPH bump the starter tend to have when letting it go in the BP. If he is around 93-95MPH, that's nice to have from the LH side :D

When you make statements like this' date=' it's going to be hard for someone not to correct you.[/quote']

I just don't see the point of spending 6 mill a year for a guy who has averaged a 4.00 ERA over the last two years. Were he a closer, it'd be one thing, but for setup guys, the number of runs that cross the plate is actually important.

What?

Pretty sure it's important for any pitcher.

And they spent a little extra per year to keep the deal short. How is this a bad thing? Now they have one of the better closers in the AL pitching the 7th/8th inning. Again how is this bad? Do you have something against people with moobs or something? :D

ERA is the most overrated stat for a pitcher. Look at his peripherals or just stop talking.

It is the only number that matters. When BABIP, xFIP and and K/9 affect the scoreboard, let me know:D

Jenks is an end run around Soriano signing with NY. I can see that coming. Soriano wants much bigger dollars for sure. But he has to setup in NY. Imagine paying a setup guy $12 mil per year! Only in NY.

Jenks will probably be OK if he can stay in shape. He pitched well at Fenway and Yankee stadium last year . 0.0 era when I last looked.

That statement I saw about his replacing Pap is a bit premature, but he has that potential. Pap didn't look much better last year. Jenks will be 30 during the season, so he has time for another big contract if he can come back. He can always set up with Bard closing.

They still need a LHder for the late innings.

off-topic --watching that Bing Crosby tape of the '60 world series/7th game on MLB.com. Hal Smith just hit a 3 run HR to put the Pirates ahead 9-7. This was one great game between two great teams. Tony Kubak had gotten hit in the adams apple on a ground ball, and left the game. I believe that ended his career. Costas is narrating the showing, with an audience and a lot of the ex-players present. Hard to see how anybody could beat that Yankee team, but the Pirates were tough and scrappy--a great team as well.

BABIP and xFIP tell you why ERA is fluky and unreliable in projections. His BABIP is in the .350s (I think), which means that more batted balls were hits than normal, and that is likely to revert to the mean.

I'll be honest, when I first said I wasn't thrilled about Jenks I had not looked at his peripherals. After being informed of this, I am a big fan of the signing.

With relief pitchers who pitch much fewer innings than starters, ERA can be deceiving. A couple of bad outings inflates your ERA. WHIP is better, but his WHIP wasn't very good last year either, 1.37?

I'm more concerned about Pap. His heater is slower, and he can't throw his splitter, which used to be his out pitch.

I've seen that remark about his peripherals in the media. That was undoubtedly a factor.

Wonder what Pap's peripherals were last year in comparison? Don't know if it matters, as the Sox aren't going pay any closer not named Rivera $12 mil +. Not with Bard locked up.

Pap's peripherals have been indicating his ERA this season is about where it ought to be. His increased walk rate is killing him. His peripherals the past 2 seasons have not been great, but the season before last he survived by stranding nearly 90% of runners - more likely luck than skill (see: Dice-K's strand rate in his second year, and his subsequent years).

Doubt he goes anywhere, though.

I don't think we need to worry about Jenks replacing Paps. With Paps being in his walk year, I expect him to put together a big season. The guy has been dreaming of this season for awhile. If he can't perform with that carrot in front of him, I don't know what to say.

With the signing of Jenks' date=' it is being reported that the Red Sox payroll has exceeded the Yankee payroll.[/quote']

LOL Until they actually sign someone. It isn't from lack of trying to spend their money.

He was the PTBNL?

I believe it was a separate deal.

Idk if it's been pointed out anywhere on the board, but with the agreement to sign Bobby Jenks, the Sox right now have a higher payroll than the yankees

I just thought that was unusual. I know I haven't chimed in here lately, but I have to give the Sox kudos on making a bunch of great improvements to their club so far this offseason. It's definitely gonna be fun to see how this team plays in 2011.

The Yankees will have a higher payroll at the start of the season. At the very least they'll probably sign Pettitte.

But I have to say, with the offseason the Red Sox have had this year, the rivalry is really back, and that's further shown by the comparable payrolls. The Red Sox have nothing to complain about anymore with regards to money. The last two years have been fairly Yankee-dominated, at least in the end result. But these teams are going to be fighting until the end, and there's a good chance they'll meet in the ALCS.

Who knows what kind of "snaky accountant tricks" are done to compare the numbers, ie how to factor in bonuses, empty roster spots etc. I also wonder how many players were counted for each team. Either way, something in that doesn't make sense and I don't put much weight on it.

I'm sorry 26 to 6, is that thing in your avatar supposed to be attractive? Because all I can think of when I look up and see that is "Oh hey, the Geico caveman is a Yankee fan."

Yeah, the payroll discrepancy will go from 70+ million to 50 million. ;)

I'm just saying that when you sign two players (probably) to 20M+ AAV, you can't go around calling the Yankees financial bullies anymore.

I agree to an extent, but I wouldn't call them equal (or even close) in terms of spending either. And besides, almost every other team in the MLB can call the Yankees financial bullies.
