So?

The Sox can keep Bard in a setup role for as long as they have control of him.

Yes but what is stopping you from moving papelbon out of the closer role then?

Not "me" the Red Sox FO.

They were apparently willing to move Papelbon off the closer role when they made that offer to Rivera. Who's to say they wouldn't do it if they were legitimately interested in Soriano?

oh idk, the guy I responded to seemed to think if you signed Soriano he'd be setting up Papelbon.

SI_JonHeyman keep hearing #redsox open to trading papelbon.

of course, being a 5-yr arb eligible closer off down yr, value is miniscule

edit: He now says Jenks is on the verge of a deal with the red sox. So I guess papelbon could be traded and bard or jenks is closer?

I don't know if they'd trade Papelbon unless he gets a decent return. And I don't see Papelbon bringing us a return that would be better than the draft picks we'd get if he left at the end of the year.

I'm not the biggest fan of Jenks, but okay. He's not going to be the closer or even the primary setup man.

Just don't bring this s***:

Well s***, looks like they weren't sitting with their thumbs up their asses after all. ;)

You'll see when Lenny DiNardo and Brandon Duckworth are closing games in October! Theo STILL has no idea what he's doing!

Don't bring what? The pink beard or the man titties?

Yup, i mean who the hell does he think he is?

It's already December 16th and this dude has the gall to not have completed this roster yet?

The nerve!

I figure the moobs are a part of the package. I meant the goatee.

So the bullpen now:

Papelbon

Bard

Jenks

Doubront

Atchison

Wakefield

Add a lefty and be done with that. Then figure out who's taking the fourth spot on the bench. I can't think of anything else to be done besides more depth signings (everyone's favorite).

Uggh, I couldn't. I'd rather see what the Royals want for Robinson Tejeda, at least he's reasonably young and the price in talent and/or money won't be exaggerated by several years of closing. Aardsma and Jenks scream inconsistency, and that's not good alchemy with an AL East schedule. And as former closers both are likely to be overpaid. I could stand one or the other plus a solid setup lefty, but not both.

If there's any way you could get Tejeda out of the Royals for a prospect like Che-Hsuan Lin or Yamaico Navarro, guys that are blocked here but fill a need where they're going, I'd rather go that route. I love Tejeda's stuff and hes just entering his prime, that's worth paying a little more for. That, or I try to find a way to steal Hong-Chi Kuo from the Dodgers -- not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

It looks like Theo and I are on the same page ...again.

I think we just need a decent lefty reliever to give ourselves a pretty good bullpen at the start of the year. Not great' date=' but not as bad as it was last year.[/quote']If they get Fuentes, I think the pen will be pretty strong.

Soooo......you were wrong. How's that crow taste?

F*** yeah, me too. If the Sox got Fuentes too I'd get a mural of Theo Epstein and complusively masturbate to it daily like I do with Erin Andrews and Alice Eve. I would fully and happily suck Theo's balls and admit that I was wrong for ever thinking about doubting him.

I just don't think we have enough money (or the opportunity of closing) to get Fuentes, unless we traded Papelbon and that might not net us a better bullpen in the first place.

Padres Acquire Eric Patterson

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 16 at 2:02pm CST]

The Padres acquired Eric Patterson from the Red Sox, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter).

Thank goodness that we will not have to endure Eric Patterson again.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a bit early to panic' date=' but if relievers keep signing, we'll be progressively screwed and this isn't a good trend. And I'm not **blind** enough to think that our bullpen is good and that we don't need [b']AT LEAST 1 good reliever to make our bullpen decent. [/b]

**I'm not saying that you, or anyone here specifically is blind to that fact, I'm just saying that I for sure am not that blind.

Signed.

Just so you know, Jenks is an excellent reliever who had extremely bad luck last season, as evidenced by an unsustainable .368 BABIP.

His 2010 FIP and xFIP stand at 2.59 and 2.62, respectively. He induces ground balls and strikes people out by the boatload. All indicative of a dominant pitcher.

He's a fantastic option, but you have to delve into his numbers to see why his ERA wasn't that good last year.

For the offseason though, I wanted 2 good relievers, I just think we only had the money to sign one. I think Jenks is ok, but he wasn't what I was looking for. Who knows if he really wants to put us under the pressure of making him close. I still think the jury is out as to what our bullpen would be like, but I'm happy that Theo actually signed someone when many other options were being signed. Does it look like I will be wrong? Certainly, but not yet. If we sign Fuentes or a good lefty of some sort, I'll change my signature to something admitting that I was wrong.

Jon Heyman, you silly beaver.

a trade that would make perfect sense but would never happen: papelbon to the #yanks. #redsox clearly ready to move on now
