AGon and Heath Bell? I don't like it when they start adding to a deal. It becomes too complex and it starts to fall apart. Adding Bell to the deal probably means 2 more prospects from our side' date=' bringing it to 5 prospects. There will be a ton of haggling over which prospects get included.[/quote']

Kelly, Rizzo, Reddick, Doubront, Navarro

Was that really so hard? I mean, you might have to replace Reddick with another piece but every other one of those players other than Kelly is more valuable to the Padres than he is to us (Doubront a SP in SD vs an RP here, Navarro blocked by 3 different SS, Rizzo blocked by the oncoming Adgon, Reddick facing weaker pitching in the NL) and we have possible replacements for their value already within about 32 months of MLB playing time (respectively, Pimentel, Anderson/Lavarnway, Kalish, Britton, Iglesias

If they don't like Reddick because of his mediocre performance last year, offer them Lin instead. Che-Hsuan Lin was made for Petco both as a spray hitter and as a super-rangy OF and the Padres don't really have a leadoff type so they should be interested.

Wait' date=' is this a confirmation?[/quote']

Nope. It's my proposal. But it's one that definitely makes all kinds of sense for both teams. Padres come away with:

Possible replacement power hitting 1B

Highly athletic outfield prospect

LHSP/LHRP

RHSP with #1SP ceiling

Young underrated SS with a decent ceiling

That;s a dang good haul, even for a slugger like Adgon and a closer type power reliever. And it's nothing we can't afford to lose

Buster Tweets:

Sources: The Red Sox flew Adrian Gonzalez into Boston for the continuation of the process, to get this deal done. He is there now.

That would be very awesome. Youk at 3B, Adgon at 1B, go around the horn Youk, Lowrie/Iglesias, Pedey, Adgon, that's danged solid. Now just fix the outfield up and we're good to go.

Most of the reports I've been reading say Kelly, Rizzo, Iglesias, + two other minor leaguers.

Wouldn't mind parting with Iglesias, but that's because I think Navarro's a better prospect than y'all do. Hitting decently as a 22 YO SS in AAA is a very good sign, I've been surprised how not-seriously people have been taking him on that basis. Also I'm just plain not convinced by Iglesias' bat to date. Not that I think he'll suck, I'm just not sold that he's more than a defense guy.

I'm going to put this out there:

Doubront would be a lot to give up and I bet he's not involved. Iglesias shouldn't be either. I could be 100% wrong but I think it is less. My guess is Rizzo, Kelly, Navarro, and a lower tier prospect (Reddick, Renfroe, Alex Wilson, Kyle Weiland, Raymond Fuentes, etc.,). This is one of those places where just throwing in more prospects makes all the difference in whether the deal is a good one or not... as Jacko pointed out.

If Kalish, Doubront or Iglesias are in the deal I will be very surprised and a bit more disappointed... until I see Gonzalez putting that f***ing red and white jersey on, that is.

Doubront is more valuable to SD than he is to us, because we don't have a rotation spot for him going forward and they do. I like him too but trading a guy for high level veterans is as good a use for a solid prospect as most others. You don't have to keep them all.

The only reason I hold Kalish out is that I think he's going to be a really special player. Doubront is decent but I don't think he has a #1 SP ceiling which he has to to be comparable to a 5 tool CF potential like Kalish.

Posted

The deal has been agreed to in principle apparently. Sporting massive wood over here. I just hope they didn't trade Iglesias.

And Doiji, could you sit down and enjoy this instead of hyping s***** prospects for three seconds?

Lol Navarro.

I agree about Doubront's future with the Sox. That doesn't mean you throw him in the first time they want an MLB ready 4th or 5th piece. Save him. Use him later for another deal, of which there will be at least a few over the next year or two I'm sure.

They should get Bowden and like it.

Lol Navarro.

I'm with Doj on this one actually. Navarro will be an MLB utility player (wait, maybe I'm not with Doj... ) so he actually has some trade value. He's not the next Hanley Ramirez, however.

I would just like to do a quick financial analysis of this one.

2011 costs, as of the end of last season-- 100.5 million, via Cots.

12.5 for Ortiz

6.3 for Agon

2 million for Varitek

Estimated 15 million between Papelbon/Ellsbury

Total-- 136 million

Last year-- 168 million

Difference-- 32 million

The only thing this team absolutely cannot do without is 2-3 relievers, because I think they may be done at C, and they could survive with a bench of Lowrie/Kalish/Salty. But that leaves a ton of money to continue to improve this team. Its looking like they have very good potential to put together a legitimate championship caliber team, and a ton of money to do it with.

Padres writer (I think):

Hearing that #RedSox package for Adrian Gonzalez includes: Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo and Reymond Fuentes.

That seems about right to me.

I'm not thrilled about throwing another first rounder into the deal, but I guess there are a lot of prospects I'd much rather hold on to.

Or we could just throw in Doubront, Kalish and/or Iglesias like others have suggested. You know, to be SURE that the done deal is done.

It doesn't matter as long as we get him, etc.,

EDIT: thanks for holding a reasonable line, Theo. Glad you're in control and not the impulsive Sox fans I know.

Well, as I said, not thrilled about him being one of the "minor pieces" in the deal, but there are definitely ten guys more important to the future of this team.

Casey Kelly tweet this morning:

"Just waking up beautiful day in sarasota about to get some breakfast. Can't worry about things that are out of your control"

What a weird existence it must be to have your future life impacted by other people's decisions.

That said, there are worse things in life than to be told that you have been traded to the San Diego Padres, you will eventually live in San Diego and probably see regular big league about 2 years earlier than you were planning on last night.

I think they cashed in on Rizzo's good season, which probably has something to do with the Anderson having a similar rise as a prospect and subsequent fall.

Rizzo is a good ballplayer, but all accounts.

This is a wonderful deal and doesn't pillage the Sox system too badly, especially with all the talent they got in 2010 draft (Vitek, Ranaudo, Brentz, Cecchini, Coyle, Workman, etc.,). We won't miss Kelly and Rizzo at this time next year, IMO.

I think unless he is a complete bust, Blanks will fill the 1B role adequately.

I can deal with that package. No Kalish an no Iglesias? Win. Kelly will be good, but not for awhile. And Fuentes also has good upside but wouldn't have contributed for awhile. This is a sweet package. So much for all those claims of having to sell the farm to pry Agon away from SD

Twitter really is the best format for these types of things:

Importance of first-round picks RT @alexspeier: Confirmed: Kelly, Rizzo and Fuentes will be the prospects going to San Diego

--Rob Bradford.

I love it. I really hope people recognize the value of prospects and draft picks from here on out. Let's never talk about just throwing in whoever it takes to make a deal happen. The Sox presumably could have traded for nearly any player with the right combination of talent, but the prospects are simply too valuable. Rizzo, Kelly and Fuentes is a lot of talent going to SD but is only THREE players from the Sox otherwise deep system. Good deal all around.

Apparently Jed Hoyer would differ on that opinion. Rizzo being the main position prospect going back speaks volumes of how Hoyer envisions Blanks. If he thought Blanks was a sure bet, he would have tried to get a different prospect other then a 1B.

Holy crap that's a good deal, especially with Kelly's stock on the low side after last year.

Bring it home and finish it off, Theo! Get him and sign him to that epic extension he wants.
