The point is, he can still hit.

He hit 42 doubles and 14 HR's last year.

Even though minute maid is a hitter's park, how many of those doubles would turn into HR's playing nearly 100 games at Fenway, Camden Yards and Tropicana?

I'd be okay with Tejada for 1 year.

So would I.

But I think Theo has a giant boner for Scutaro and will likely offer a multi-year deal for the guy. That I just can't fathom.

Posted
If Theo offers anything more than a 1-year deal with an option to Scutaro, he needs to f***ing quit his job.

The Sox should sign Miguel Tejada for one year. Sure his defense is on the decline, but the guy hit last year, and for the most part he has always hit. Scutaro is a 34 year old one year wonder. We won't be tied down with Tejada unlike Scutaro who will demand a 3 year deal. Also I believe Tejada is only a Type B free agent, so we wouldn't have to give up anything other than money to get him. Scutaro is a type A guy. It just isn't worth it to sign Scutaro. We are all talking about stop gap solutions until Iglesias is ready, how the hell is a 3 year deal a stop gap solution?

Sure, he's better than Green, but don't kid yourself into thinking that that means Scutaro's actually good.

Scutaro has a .721 career OPS

Green has a .660 OPS

How much is that extra .061 really worth? Is it worth a first round pick?

I never said I think Scutaro is good. I think Scutaro sucks and wouldn't be anything more than a league average player.

AGREED.

There are a number of utility men, especially Maicer Izturis or Nick Punto, that I'd trade for before investing in Marco Scutaro.

Posted

Izturis is not getting traded.

Punto, Everett, Tejada, Cora, Juan Castro,Felipe Lopez,O-Cab,Ramon Martinez.

Any two of those guys on one-year deals are better options than Marco Scutaro.

A) Nitpicking FTW.

B ) I actually confused him with Ramon Santiago from the Tigers. My bad.

I realize there's a lot to not be excited about with Scutaro. I hope he's not Theo's plan.

That said, he's been worth 7.2 WAR over the last two seasons (2.7 and 4.5). His statistics don't look spectacular, but with decent defense and an MLB approach at the plate he was worth $32.3m over those two years ($12m and $20.2m).

If Scutaro is interested in playing for Boston (i.e., would take a reasonable contract to get his prefered team) then the Sox might be able to get him at a decent rate. I actually don't think he would be a bad guy to have hitting 9th if they could sign him for something like 3 yrs/$17m AND if they were going to sign another FA and they wouldn't lose key picks for him.

He could be worth the entire 3 years of his salary if he earns 4-5 WAR over the life of the contract. He would give them a reliable veteran and someone they wouldn't mind sitting if Lowrie or Iglesias are able to take his spot.

Again, I'm much more in favor of other options, but this one would not keep me up at night.

It would keep me up at night seeing that he's 34 and this is the first time he's had an above average performer as a regular in the SS position.

He's a bust waiting to happen.

I'm not sure $6m/yr would be a bust, per-se.

The obvious question is who else would you want? Miguel Tejada is a realistic option, except he's not very good at SS anymore and defense is something they should be aiming to upgrade.

A) Please read my previous post about Tejada.

NO WAY to a three year deal in Scutaro. We will almost certainly be eating the third year of that deal. How many contracts are we willing to eat, especially at the SS position?

I feel it is somewhat embarrassing to even be discussing Nick Green. Seriously? Starting SS for the Boston Red Sox, Nick f***ing Green? Come on man, give me a break. He was a AAAA outcast before last season with no resume who had a fluke first couple of months. Bottom line, he sucks and is not starting SS material, especially for a team built with the payroll like the RedSox.

Agon was the best option, that is gone and past. O Cab might be an option, however it seems like he may be more interested in playing 2B at this point in his career based on comments hes recently made. Tejada is a realistic option, he doesnt have the same long ball pop, but he can still rake, and Fenway is much more friendly than Houston.

If Nick Green is the starting SS for next season, the FO is pretty much showing us that the writing is on the walls, that the season is a lost one due to a poor FA class, and I wont be spending any money on Sox tickets next year after they just rose ticket prices AGAIN.

People might want to shoot me for this, but i'd much rather have Tejada and a Glovey McnoodleBat on one-year deals.

Tejada, contrary to popular belief, was a pretty good SS as soon as 2008, and i got to see a lot of him because he's "Captain Dominican" so we get a lot of Astros games, usually when Wandy Rodriguez pitches, or they face up against a Dominican SP.

2008 Tejada defensive metrics:

UZR: 9.3

UZR/150: 9.4

RF/G: 4.0

RF/9: 4.2.

2009 Tejada defensive metrics:

UZR: -13.9

UZR/150: -12.4

RF/G: 4.4

RF/9: 4.5

His range factor ratings actually improved in 2009, so a number of factors might have to do with his UZR decline, but the fact is, Tejada's defense is not what he showed in 2008 or 2009 but something in between, right around league average, and not a statue like some "Educated guessers" would lead you to believe.

Tejada on a one-year deal would be fine, but I think he could reasonably ask for a lot of money. I also imagine he would be hesitent to take such a short contract. I would be if I were him. They might consider Tejada for 2-3 years.

Honestly man, I'm really pretty "blah" about the SS position. What they need is 2-3 years until some of their young SS can develop or while they seek an impact player. Nick Green, Alex Gonzalez, etc. types might be what they get if they don't sign a guy like Scutaro. It seems to be a pretty weak position MLB-wide right now, certainly through FA, and the SS who are really good are understandibly locked-in wth their teams.

They seek a franchse SS; we'll know him when we see him. I imagne they want to be as flexible as possible untl that happens.

Personally, I hope that Jed Lowrie steps up and takes the position. They don't have to have a star there, but they need have either a developing, cost-controlled player who plays above average ball, or an established impact player. The SS postion has been a dead position since (before) Renteria left and I don't see any obvious answers that would make Red Sox fans happy.

Any option that is not 34-year-old Marco Scutaro on a 3-year deal sounds good to me.

People are advocating for re-signing Nick Green?

Really? Resigning Nick Green?

Doiji, to be exact.

I've advocated for him as a backup to a SS signed on a one-year (with an option if necessary) deal from the current crop. Preferably Tejada or Adam Everett.

If they signed him for 2-3 years, he'd be playing 3B after the first year.

Do you want Scutaro? I don't

He could slide over to 3B next after 2010. Lowell is off the books then. And Tejada at 3B for a season wouldn't be too bad. But next year's FA crop of SS is uninspiring again.

Alex Gonzalez *

Christian Guzman

Omar Infante *

Cesar Izturis

Derek Jeter

Julio Lugo

Jhonny Peralta *

Edgar Renteria

Jose Reyes *

Jimmy Rollins *

Ramon Santiago

Ramon Vazquez

Jack Wilson

I guess we can hope for a "Omar gaff" and he some how manages to not pick up Reyes option...

Marco Scutaro at 3B?

Seriously?

Stop and think about it for a couple minutes.

A700 can clarify, but I think he's talking about Tejada moving to 3B, which seems more likely.

If Tejada is willing to take a contract that is reasonable based on the player he is now then he's worth looking at, with the undertanding that he's a 3B in waiting.

The problem is that I don't believe he has played much 3B at all and whether he has the required skills to play the position. I don't love the idea.

If this is directed at me, I was saying Tejada at 3B not Scutaro.
