This is what gets me.. the Yankees are critisized for their payroll, but how much of it goes to Jeter, Pettitte, Rivera, and Posada? There was a debate that, "oh, since theyre so expensive you can't debate that they were homegrown." Well, my take on it is this... I'm glad the Yankees will dish out money to keep homegrown talent. Whats wrong with that? Atleast they're not the Marlins.. goodbye Josh Becket, AJ Burnett, Dontrelle Willis, Miguel Cabrera. If the Marlins did decide to actually dish out, my god.. that team would be stacked. What does that show the fans? That they aren't worth the money? They'll ship out an entire team to keep payroll under what Arod makes in a year.. but does nothing to keep the fans in the park.

The Yankees make a lot of money, they turn around and put it right back into the club. Whats the harm in that? Atleast I know any tickets and memoribilia I purchase, its going back into the team, not the owners pockets.

The Marlins are a bad example because their fans don't show up to the park. At all. I don't blame their FO for letting all their great players go. From a business standpoint, it makes all the sense in the world.

Their fans don't show because they get rid of all their good players!

You need to spend money to make money. Look what George Steinbrenner did, he bought the Yankees for 10 million Dollars and now the franchise is worth 1.5 Billion, not a bad investment eh?

What a great ceremony to cap off the parade. I just wanna know who this ugly bitch performing with Jay-Z who can't sing is.....f***ing Alicia Keys ripoff.

TK, what kind of answer are you looking for?

I know I've already stated this, but I don't care how much money the Red Sox spent in 2007, and I don't care how much money the Yankees spent in 2009. I'm just happy that they won.

Basically that's what it comes down to. I only bring up the fact that the Sox outspend the other 28 teams year in and year out (with the exception of this year apparently) because they're constantly bitching about the Yankees spending habits. Just a bunch of haters I tell ya!

The Red Sox have been 2nd in payroll 6 out of 9 years starting in 2001, and in 3 of those years the difference between the Sox and the 3rd place team has been 10 millions or less.

This is the difference between the Yanks and the 2nd place team since 2002:

In 2002, the Yankees spent $17 million more in payroll than any other team.

In 2003, the Yankees spent $35 million more in payroll than any other team.

In 2004, the Yankees spent $57 million more in payroll than any other team. "

In 2005, the Yankees spent $85 million more than any other team.

In 2006, the Yankees spent $74 million more than any other team.

In 2007, the Yankees spent $40 million more than any other team ..

In 2008, the Yankees spent $72 million more than any other team.

In 2009, the Yankees spent $52 million more than any other team.

Number 1: Get your facts straight.

Number 2: Look at the above numbers.

Number 3: Quit your whining.

Using the "I know i do it, but so do you" argument holds little water, specially you you don't know what you're talking about, for one, and the fact the the Yankees have the 2nd highest payroll plus the Oakland A's or Florida Marlins on top of it.

The Yankees bought their championship, and everyone else will call them out on it. Simple as that.

You whine more than anyone here. The Yankees make the most money, they spend the most money. Deal with it. You bought your championships as well...just not with as much money.

You don't need a girlfriend. You are your own bitch.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Gommie's butthurt.

That's ok. We understand.

You throw away the last part as if it doesn't matter.

It's the point. It's what everyone focuses on.

Bought championships include:

All of them ever. Every team is owned, every player is owned, therefore, every championship was 'bought'.

Thought experiment:

Can you imagine if the entire country of China bought a baseball team? And they decided that their payroll cap was about $500m in any particular season. Thus the payroll numbers would be:

Chinese Team: $435m

Yankees: $208m

Some combination of Mets, Dodgers, Red Sox, Cubs, etc.,: $100-130m

No big deal, I'm sure you're thinking.

Now imagine how you would respond if, when that Chinese team inevitably won its WS, their lowlife fans started talking s*** about the Yankees and how superior the Chinese team was over the other franchises because of their baseball prowess...

Just think about it for a second...

Are you saying that at no point would you bring up the monetary differences as a reason why the Chinese team was better--rather than the implied differences in 'character' or 'city' or 'fans' or 'ghosts of the stadium' or any other 'mystique' based s*** that the Chinese team would like to gloat about? I bet you would.

The Yankees have no chance of catching up to China in overall income or media market. The CSN (Chinese Sports Network) is worth $3.5 billion, they have plans for a new stadium and this year, although $100m is coming off the books, they're thinking of really pushing that payroll advantage. They just signed Pujols AND Mauer to $40m/yr contracts, but they realized that Roy Halladay and Josh Beckett were avaialble (the Yankees stopped their bidding at $25m/yr for each and thought they had it sealed, but the Chinese Warriors always get the last call by agents and they decided that they could manage to absorb another $50m/yr. It seems dick, it seems like its against the competitive nature of the sport, yet its totally legitimate. Deal with it.

The Chinese team's relationship to the Yankees (roughly twice as big) is only the relative difference between the current Colorodo Rockies and the real Yankees. Middle of the pack. For a team to have the spending advantages over the Yankees that the Yankees have over the Marlins, it would have a payroll of $1.236 Billion (to the Yankees $208m).

Would you be okay with a 31st team coming in and having a $1.236B payroll? Or are you only okay with it as long as your team has a 5x advantage on the lowest teams?

Just in case there's any confusion here, Gom, this is a rhetorical question. Regardless of what you say, we all know the real answer.

In Gom's world, logic is reversed , so what do you really expect?

Gom does have a point, though, when he says that the Yankees are able to put all this money into the team because they make the most money. This is a business, and, in a way, the Yankees deserve credit for making more money than anyone. They are reaping the benefits of their success in the late 90s.

So the point is you should be commended for buying championships?

Brilliant.

What are you talking about? The Yankees bring in more revenue than any other team, because of their past success. This is what allows them to spend as much as they do.

Think of it this way. By winning the business aspect of the sport (making money), the Yankees are able to better their chances of winning games on the field.

You don't get it, do you?

They make the most money and spend the most money.

But is it fair?

Just answer that question.

Is it fair?

Don't you think the team that brings in the most money should be allowed to spend the most money?

I understand that football and basketball have salary caps. That is certainly one way to do things. And if baseball ends up implementing a salary cap, I won't have any problem with it.

However, lets take a look at a hypothetical business example, because I liked E1's hypothetical Chinese baseball example so much.

Five companies are competing to find a cure for baldness. However, Company A made more money than the other four companies because of the success of their past products. Would you condemn them for spending more money than the other four companies on research?

That's fine, but also rather childish of you not to respond to the rest of the post, when you challenge me with a question. My business example made a lot of sense.

You can say that the Yankees bought their championship all you want. I don't disagree. They spent more money than anyone else.

However, they make more money than anyone. I don't understand why you think that's irrelevant. After all, America is a capitalist society.

Well you can call it childish.

But it's rather simple really.

If the team that makes the most money can spend the most money, that's a big "f*** YOU" to the teams that don't make as much money.

It's really that simple.

This is not a society by the way, this is sports.

You don't think that the team that makes the most money should be able to take advantage of that fact? It's absolutely ridiculous to think that they shouldn't take advantage of their success. Championships are won on and off the field, and the Yankees' ability to bring in revenue is one of the big reasons why they were able to win it this year.

What i think is absolutely ridiculous is that the difference between the Yanks' and the second highest payroll is more than some teams' entire payroll.

However, as a Yankee fan, you will defend this to the death.

I bet you wouldn't be so happy if you were a Rockies or Twins' fan.
