what OFers are on the FA next year?

and could we get a Beckett (or another pitcher of similar caliber) and a good OFer and maybe a decent SS (assuming we don't grab one this offseason) all in next years FA market, is that likely for us?

Sox signed Scutaro.

I have every possible finger crossed for it not to be true.

Because I'm lazy and don't feel like looking it up, what is your hopeful idea of the SS solution?

Miguel Tejada.

No draft pick cost, and he can hit. His defense leaves a lot to be desired, but he could probably be had cheaper and on a shorter contract than Scuta-FAIL.

The only problem I have is the defense is really really bad. I'd rather have an all glove, little bat SS for awhile. Then main objective, and I think it's an agreement, is getting another big bat here.

Scutaro really isn't that good a defender.

If Bay signs quickly with a team that's more interested (say... Seattle, just for the purpose of this discussion) what prevents the Yankees from raining on the parade and getting Holliday?

Given how little salaries ultimately matter to the Yankees, and the fact that they've lost a fair amount of salary off their books going into 2010, wouldn't they sign him just for sport? Just because they can? I think they would.

I will say this... Jeremy Hermida in LF will be hard for Red Sox fans to accept in 2010. Obviously, it could happen, or the Sox will be making another trade / FA signing.

But, I'm just saying, regardless of whether we all think Holliday isn't exactly worth a huge bidding war... he isn't really. But.... if Marco Scuturo ends up being their biggest FA signing....oh god, I don't even want to think about it.

well...

it could be a rough time for Henry (plus ticket prices up again, Yankee W.S etc). Plus, Marco Scutaro is not exactly who many fans are pleased with anyway.

Fielding Bible had him +13 in 2009 and 15 in +2008.

He had an UZR/150 of 1.0 and a Rf/G of 4.3. Those are just a teeny bit above average. He's not a defensive wizard.

This is 2009 btw.

In 2008 he had a fantastic UZR, but only played 56 games at SS.

So, what you're saying is, he's league average defensively and offensively?

Do you realize how much of an improvement that would be over the 2009 team?

You really think he's going to come close to last year's offensive explosion again?

Btw, it's being reported by the US media already.

lol, mlbtraderumors.

Besides, he's had a .730 OPS since 2005. Who was the last Red Sox shortstop to have a .730 OPS for a full season?

I'm not crazy about the player, but if he can give them league average production (something they haven't had since Nomar) at a reasonable cost, what's the harm?

I agree with Kilo. It's not something Sox fans should be jumping for joy at, but at the same time it won't hurt the team.

Especially if the reports of 2/10 are true. I mean, this team paid Alex f***ing Cora $2 million to be the backup infielder.

You wanna talk pure suck....talk Cora.

We'll see.

I hope he makes me eat crow.

But as i said in the other thread, i'm taking my "Career year LOL" chant until the end of the contract.

The draft pick. The Twins can't offer Cabrera arbitration, so they could have had him without giving up draft compensation.

Same for Tejada.

Not to mention, this is the first time Scutaro has had an OPS above .701 in a year where he played more than 118 games.

He's not 30, he's 34, so my concerns are legit.

And if the Sox go out and sign Lackey and Holliday, the pick becomes their 3rd rounder. If they sign one of them, it's their second rounder.

If Cabrera was thought to be a fit in Boston, he would have stayed after 2004, wouldn't he have?

What connection does this have with the Sox' current SS situation?

Completely cherry picked

The .747 OPS in 2006 in OAKLAND in 117 games counts for nothing, Mr. "Matt Holliday suffered from a terrible hitting environment for the early part of 2009"?

No.

This is cherry picked.

117 games =/= starting position player time.

Face it, he exploded offensively for the first time as a regular at age 34, and it's highly doubtful he'll keep it up.

As i said before, i hope to God he makes me eat crow, but the realist in me knows it's likely not going to happen.

According to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, Marco Scutaro's deal with the Red Sox is for two years and carries an option for a third.

The Red Sox were smart enough to keep things on a short-term basis with the 34-year-old shortstop. Scutaro posted excellent numbers in 2009 -- a .282/.379/.409 batting line, 12 homers, 60 RBI and 100 runs scored -- but some type of regression should be expected. After all, he's a .265/.337/.384 career hitter, even with the '09 stats factored in. The deal will be finalized Friday morning with a physical and a press conference.
