Haven't heard a ton of talk about Bay around here lately. All I'm really wondering is this - do you think we get some sort of extension done soon or during the season? Or does he end up hitting FA after 2009? Obviously he fit in well here after the trade and he's a guy I'd like to see the Sox hang on to for the long term.

I don't see any particular reason for Bay to want to leave, and I don't see any particular reason for the Soxx to want him to, so all in all there's no reason why we don't see an extension before he hits FA.

I agree he doesn't seem like the big flashy guy that will chase the biggest contract. With that in mind, i could see him exceptin a reasonable extension.

4/50-60M?

? He has an agent and he's a part of the player's association. He'd be negotiating with the second richest team in baseball. He'll be 30 and he'll either want the opportunity to get back into FA early on or be locked up for a long time. I see now way that Bay signs a deal shorter than 6 yrs. And with the way the market is going, if Bay hits the open market, he could get 18 mil a yr next yr or more

MJ- the market for corner outfielders has plummeted this offseason. Olney has actually referred to it a few times.

says who? 30 yr old OF bats with OPS in the .900 get paid that much on the open market.

Adam Dunn would like you as his agent.

The Yanks will sign either Bay or Holliday' date=' not both.[/quote']

They could feesably sign both. But if they only want one, I think it will be Holliday. Which could help keep Bay in Boston.

We'll see. If Holliday goes to Oakland and is mediocre, then we wont get him. And while we could theoretically sign both, I have a feeling CF will be figured out between Melky, Gardner and Jackson and I also think Damon returns, leaving one open spot.

It might be reasonable to assume the 2 top franchises will get the top FA LF on the market. Knowing that both will have a need at that position. Unless there is some unforseen trade, I think one will be in Boston and one will be in NY. Depending on which one NYY decides to pay.

If Nady has a good year (contract year), he gets an extension. Nady could be cheaper than Bay or Holliday.

I see Bay staying in Boston, 80/5 or something. But definitely Theo won't let him go.

That would make sense for most teams. But seems how he's on the Yanks, he could have a great year and probaly will still get replaced by the big money name.

If Bay doesn't except what Theo and CO offer, then I can see him being dealt at some point this season.

He will get 18M if he becomes a Yankee. No one else will pay that much.

I would offer him $15-$18M if he needed that much. He's a good hitter and fills a need position that otherwise we have to sacrifice money, picks, prospects, or a combination of the three to occupy.

If you can't replace a guy and you rate your first round pick as worth something in the neighborhood of $3-4M in value to the team then sure you go that high.

I think everyone will wait and see how these players do first. Both Bay and Holliday are coming over from the other league...Bay had some time here in the AL...but I don't think there's a rush for either player until we can see what they do.

I actually agree with Gom on this, there is plenty of time for the Bay/Holliday situation to work themselves out.

Oh' date=' stop. Like the Yankees need another left fielder.[/quote']

They will next offseason. Matsui is FA, and so is Nady.

On the Bay front, signs are pointing to the yankees dealing one of their OFers. It seems that the yankees are not sold on Damon's capacity to play CF 140 games out of the yr (nor am I), so they are prepared to go with the winner of the ST competition between Melky, Gardner and Jackson. With that said, Matsui and Damon are not going anywhere. Both have NTCs, both have one yr left and both, when healthy are better than the rest. So that RF slot is coming down to Swisher or Nady. And right now, both players are getting lots of interest. If the yankees deal Swisher away, then they will be left with no established OF talent after the season. They will likely have a CFer out of their young guys, but both corners and the DH slot will be empty. I could see them resigning Damon since he fills a need in the leadoff slot, but that would mean both LF/DH and RF are open. That could mean that either Holliday or Bay, or both end up in stripes next yr. I would think that Bay would be a moron to accept an extension right now.

Think about it. We'll be looking for a DH or LF (depending on if we resign Damon and where he will play) and definitely a RF. These are the major offensive attractions coming available after this yr.

Adam LaRoche

Mark DeRosa

Brian Roberts

Adrian Beltre

Coco Crisp

Johnny Damon

Hideki Matsui

Xavier Nady

Chone Figgins

Jason Bay

Matt Holliday

Aubrey Huff

Jermaine Dye

Miguel Tejada

of those players, Bay, Huff, Holliday and Dye are the only ones with great bats right now. Some are decent (LaRoche) others have a different dimension like Figgins. Some are old but could be solid in Damon and Matsui. But Bay and Holliday will both be the cream of the crop. Young, powerful, great eye, middle of the order presences. And after seeing what the top dog from this yr got, I doubt he'd pass up the chance to be the top dog in next yrs class, especially if Holliday struggles outside of coors. If Bay hits the market while the yankees have need for 2 OFers, you better expect Bay's offers to break 15 mil a yr and likely approach 20

Exactly what did the top COF dog get this off season?

Ibanez? 3/10

Bradley? 3/10(led the AL in OBP and OPS)

You over value the market.

The Yankees might give him 18M a season, but they will be bidding against themselves if they do so. No one else is goign to pay that much.

The way the market is and might head to, he might be better of signing an extension.
