actually they've made 2 acquisitions on offense. Trading for Swisher was one and then dealing for Cameron is another. But they have the cash. Look at the guys coming off contract in terms of AAV and single season payout...

Pudge- 13mil in 08 (option picked up by Tigers)

Giambi- 17.1mil AAV (21mil in 08)

Betemit- 1.1 mil AAV

Abreu- 16mil in 08 (option picked up by Yankees)

Pavano- 10 mil AAV in 08 (11 mil in 08)

Pettitte- 16mil in 08

Mussina- 11.5mil in 2008

That comes out to 84.5 mil coming off the lux tax cap and 88.5 mil off the 2008 total payout. Now lets look at the guys we are adding

Marte- 4 mil per, which is a 1 mil increase over his salary from 08- +1mil

Swisher- 5.3 mil salary in 09 with a 5.4mil AAV of his salary- +5.4mil

Cameron- if no salary is picked up, +10 mil, lets say for argument's sake, the Brewers pick up 3mil of it. +7mil

Sabathia- +23mil

Burnett- +17 mil (I think the 5yrs 85 will do it)

If all the above are finalized, we'll have no holes in the lineup and one hole in the rotation with a total of 53.4 mil being added to the payroll. Therefore, our team salary will decrease by $31 million and our total payout for 2009 will decrease by $35mil. Lets say for argument's sake, we meet Pettitte in the middle and sign him for 13 mil. That would leave us with a 22 mil savings from 08 to 09 while allowing us to field....

C- Posada

1B- Swisher

2B- Cano

3B- Rodriguez

SS- Jeter

LF- Damon

CF- Cameron

RF- Nady

DH- Matsui

Bench:

Molina- Backup C

Ransom- Backup IFer or OFer

Miranda- Backup 1B, LF, DH

Gardner- 4th OFer

XXX- utility guy to be named (sounds like either Bill Hall or Nick Punto)

Rotation

#1- C.C. Sabathia

#2- Chien-Ming Wang

#3- A.J. Burnett

#4- Andy Pettitte

#5- Joba Chamberlain

Relief

Rivera

Marte

Veras

Ramirez

+2 from a long list of viable candidates.

For the first time in a long while, I can honestly say that the team is stacked if the above team is fielded. We arent overly offensively loaded. We are significantly pitching loaded. And the only thing that will slow us down is the injury bug.

The scariest thing about the above team is that after 09, another 56 mil comes off the books (Cameron, Nady, Matsui, Pettitte, and Damon) and if things break right, Pettitte would be replaced internally. That means we'd have another 3 offensive holes (Action Jackson would likely start 2010 in CF) to fill with a good market once again in 2010. Just in time for Holliday and Magglio to hit the market.

Said on espnradio, that the Yanks have offered Burnett a 5yr/80M deal.

You guys can have him at that price.

there were reports yesterday that it reached 91 mil over 5 yrs, but those have since been debunked. The most recent rumor I heard was that it "exceeded" 80 mil over 5 yrs, most likely 84-85 mil. Like I said before, I dont give two shits about the money. Its the yrs. I dont like 5 yrs on Burnett. But so be it. We have a brand spanking new money machine being rolled out, might as well peak the interest in the fanbase from the getgo.

It's not like people won't go if Burnett isn't signed.

If the Yanks have to "peak" the interest of its fans, there alot worse off then they seem.

Any day now the Red Sox will start planting stories in the papers about how they can't compete financially with the Yankees. The claims of poverty are coming.

What would you have them do?

If they spend $200mm on Teixeira, will it keep you quiet?

but it is easier to sell to the fans when it is obvious that you are willing to spend to make your team better. The problems in the past have been the albatross contracts that prevented us from getting other players. Now that some of the dead weight is gone, it is easier for the team to make a whole hearted effort to sign premier talent.

Posted

Yes they finally got rid of all those untradeable albatross deals.

Only to renew them with 3 new ones(CC, Lowe, Burnett hypothetically).

Posted
Albatross contracts?

You do realize that they are attempting to make the exact same mistake again, only for more money and more years for each player, right?

That may be the case. Or they may be getting players that can actually perform for us. Going for Burnett is the risky move here, but if they have Wang, CC and another proven innings eater (Lowe or Pettitte) then they can afford to absorb the risk, because when AJ is on, nobody is better.

When has AJ been on?

I'm pretty sure even when AJ is "on" (which only happens sometimes during contract years) there are two pitchers ON THE RED SOX (not to mention the others in the league) who still throw better than him.

His numbers last year weren't even that good, by the way.

Posted
Burnett is 4 years younger than Lowe. Lowe is more consistent. Burnett has better stuff. Lowe eats up more innings. Really a toss up. But I'd take Burnett solely because of the age difference. Either way, the Yanks' 1-4 starters will give other teams fits next season. That is, of course, if Chamberlain is a legit starter, Wang bounces back, Sabathia lives up to expectations, and the Yanks sign Lowe/Burnett.

Burnett turned it on after the AS break. His post AS numbers were ridiculous. Also, adding CC and Burnett to Joba gives the yankees 3 power pitchers in their rotation, capable of striking out 8-9 guys per 9IP. We havent had that kind of power pitching in a long time.

5 years for burnett, 7 for sabby,18M for lowe??

good

come 2011 when the 3 of them are out of baseball it will be hysterical, meanwhile who will crack 1st?

the fat f*** sabby who is the arod version of post season pitching, the tuff luck burnett or d lowe,a man with a very fragile psyche who seems to be unloved inspite of success??

Burnett has the best upside, no doubt in my mind he can be dominant and of all the available pitchers hed be the one i wanted the sox to land...5 years is a stretch, long long time in pitching years and this isnt a kid we're discussing.

I do know the yanks went from 5-1 to 3-1 since monday to win the world series and the sox fell from 5-1to 6-1.

what does this mean?

how the f*** do i know but the men who do know think the yanks got a lot better in a hurry and i cant argue about that for a moment.

instead of the 1998 allstars they now have the 2002 allstar team with some guys remaining from the 98 team

Posted

Im not jealous at all of what the yankees have done so far. I think they are repeating their errors to a lesser extent in talent and to a greater extent in dollars in years, leaving their decision making on par with that made in the early years of this decade.

The second half of a contract year is reason to pay out 5 years at 17 per?

Posted

An unnamed Yankee told the post last night that he talked with Burnett and that AJ told him they would be teammates. If this is true, AJ intends to sign with us (gasp), if not over the weekend I expect it to be done sometime next week.

Now bring back Andy, if he doesn't want $10 Mil then sign Sheets. Pass on Lowe, we'll be fine.

And for this much money Burnett BETTER stay healthy. I fear that we may be seeing a Pavano-type situation all over again.

Quite a shopping spree that would be for the '08 season....Sabathia, Pettite, Sheets.

These f***bags would be tough to beat if all stayed healthy.

Damn, well the money is worth it when he's healthy. He's reached 30 starts just twice, those 2 times... his contract years

$240 million for 2 pitchers, will they break the $300 or even $400 million mark this offseason?

Posted

Posted this on speculaiton a few weeks back but with this most recent signing, it's official:

If the Yankees do not win the World Series in 2009 it will be one of the greatest failures in the history of professional sports. There is no way they should not win it. Any additional big name signings will make anything short of a title that much more of a failure.

It's almost like bringing a shotgun to a fist fight.

If they do win it? Big fkn deal...they should have.

Posted

Wow, 5 years 82.5M......

I was for the Sox going after Burnett at a reasonable cost. But that is ridiculous amount of cheese for a Barely .500 pitcher. Who only seems to start all season in contract years.

Time will tell on this one.

Posted
These are good moves for the Yanks in the short-term, but long-term, who knows? If it wasn't the Yanks I'd say the deals would handcuff them, but with their wallet...
