For the sake of discussion, and the fact the season is over 1/3 of the way done, who are your first and second picks for the major awards (ROY, Cy Young, MVP, Manager of the Year) in each league?

AL:

MVP - ARod. The season he has had to this point, this award really isn't even in question at this point. If he continues this pace, he'll win it going away. If he cools a bit, he'll still probably win it going away.

Runner Up - Vladdy. How do the Angels have that record with this lineup? (Hint - I know it's the pitching). But Vlad is having a truly tremendous season, and it's remarkable what the guy can do pretty much all by himself in that lineup. They get one more reliable bat and they could be the favorites in the AL. Arod's new home next year?

Cy Young - Dan Haren. Josh Beckett's been good, but I think the DL stint really hurt him here to this point. Beckett has more wins, but in terms of overall performance Dan Haren has been the best pitcher in baseball not named Jake Peavy.

Runner Up - Josh Beckett. Corner turned? I think so. Last week's start aganst the Rox notwithstanding, Beckett has been the bona fide ace for the team with the best record in baseball. He also has 9 wins, and since voters love the win total this could give him a big edge. It'd be a disappointment if he doesn't get 20. Anything less at this point is inexcusable.

Rookie of the Year - Daisuke Matsuzaka. Yeah, the raw numbers aren't there yet. But I think when his luck adjusts and he becomes more acclimated to the hitters in the MLB, he will have tremendous success. Those strikeout numbers are tasty.

Runner Up - Hideki Okajima. Call me a homer, but this guy has been the surprise of the season for the Sox so far. He has really solidified a bullpen many called suspect at the start of the year. At least so far, him and Papelbon have made games 7 inning affairs.

Manager of the Year - Eric Wedge, Cleveland.

Runner Up - Terry Francona, Red Sox.

NL:

MVP - Jose Reyes, Mets. Probably the ultimate 5-tool guy. Has an outside shot at 100 steals, which is nice considering he's getting on base close to 40% of the time. The Mets are in a bit of a funk right now, but Reyes has been their best player and he's the reason they are still in first.

Runner Up - Prince Fielder, Brewers. Off to an amazing start, he is one of the many young players Milwaukee is relying on to bring them back to baseball relevance. From the looks of things, he's on the right track.

Cy Young - Jake Peavy, Padres. Best pitcher in the NL easily, probably the entire bigs at this point. Had a rough year last year, but seems to have corrected himself rather nicely.

Runner Up - Brad Penny, Dodgers.

Rookie of the Year - Cole Hamels, Phillies (Is he eligible?)

Runner Up - Hunter Pence, Astros

Manager of the Year - Bud Black, Padres

Runner Up - Ned Yost, Brewers

Hamels isn't a rook.

AL:

CYA: Danny Haren, OAK

ROY: Daisuke Matsuzaka, BOS

MOY: Eric Wedge, CLE

Reggie Willits has some nice numbers, but he doesn't qualify as a rookie (he was on the active roster for 8 games in April and was called up on July 19, which, excluding the period in which rosters expand, gave him a grand total of 52 days on the 25-man roster last year). The idiots calling the Angels game last night were hyping him as a ROY candidate.

I agree with this 100%.

Willits is considered a rookie.

He was recalled from AAA on April 22nd, 2006, and optioned on April 30th, 2006. Eight.

Recalled from AAA on July 19th, 2006, and optioned on August 1st, 2006. Twelve.

Recalled from AAA on August 14th, 2006, and kept on the roster for the rest of the year.

20+17 = 37 days, which is eight days shy of the maximum level.

CYA: Jake Peavy, SD

ROY: Hunter Pence, HOU

Anyone who puts anyone over Arod at this point in the season for AL MVP should be banned forever from this board.

I would give it to Pedroia over Matsuzaka [is he eligible?]. If not, I would give it to someone else. I just don't agree with the Japanese player being a rookie thing.

Yeah, but he's A-Rod. A-ROD.?.?, you know, the Yankee.

Sensational year for both players. There' is still another 90 games to play.

That would be what I was looking at. It's VERY close though, but Mags and Rod are 1-2, whichever order they're in.

Maggs is also an outfielder/DH who plays D like a one legged retard. ARod plays a tougher position and is in the tougher market. People could also say that Maggs could be removed from the tigers and sheff plus the staff could hold their own. This season, especially when it has counted, nobody has been bigger than ARod. He gets my vote.

For once, A-Rod's value to the Yankees means something.

The biggest homer response I have ever read. A-Rod should get the MVP to this point because he plays in New York and plays 3rd base. Because Ordonez plays in Detroit and plays the OF he shouldn't be worthy of the MVP. Way to show true colors of a Yankee fan.

...by the way A-Rod is deserving because he is smashing the crap out of the ball and keeping the Yankees around .500 baseball....congrats. If memory serves many Yankee fans last season were saying Jeter should win because the Yanks are making the playoffs and the Red Sox weren't so Ortiz shouldn't be considered. Last I checked the Tigers are well on pace to make the playoffs and the Yanks....errr.....maybe?

This could push Rodriguez past Ordonez.

and is in the tougher market.

This doesn't.

Neither would this.

This season, especially when it has counted, nobody has been bigger than ARod. He gets my vote.

Ordonez has been the better hitter this year, and has more value as such. Nobody has been better than Ordonez.

It's a very close call but I would give the slight edge to A-ROD simply because and I hate to say this, he has basically been the only thing stable this year for the Yankees. He has helped them stay afloat in the AL east and wild card race's. His homeruns have also seemed more timely than usual this season. Also he has 70+ RBIs to this point with 27 homers.

A-Rod's been the steadiest thing for the Yankees...Ordonez has been more steady. A-rod hit .235 with a .783 OPS in May, Magglio has hit .344 with a 1.056 OPS or better every month.

Again, team success means nothing in terms of the most valuable player.
