You do realize the Sox would have to do trades to have Trot be the 4th OF. Drew is all but signed with Boston, bringing back Trot would give them a count of 6 outfielders signed for next year. Also his arbitration cost would be $7-8 million. Nice hit in the payroll as they try to sign Matsuzaka, Drew, Lugo, additional bullpen help (if any), backup catcher, and still possibility they are looking for another starter

Where'd you get your info? Trot made $6.5 million last season and could expect a raise in salary

That's an absurd amount of money for a Trot who doesn't really play very often and when he does he can't hit a HR even if someone told him th epitch that is coming. That said, I like Trot and would like to see him on the team.

Prediction: arbitration --> trade no lose draft picks

There are a lot of players who might fit those aspects and would sign for a lot less than Nixon. Offering Nixon arbritation is a mistake, there isn't an organization that will offer him a salary close to what he could make in arbritation and at this time in Nixon's carreer he is barely an fourth outfielder.

trot will get arbitration and he will accept it. Nobody is taking him seriously and the only thing he can do is count on a 20% drop in pay which is the most arbitration will allow. That would still have him around 5mil, which is more than he will make in a long term deal anywhere else.

I sure hope Nixon get arbitration, at first i thought no Nixons time is up, injury-prone, age... but i didnt really think of him as a 4th or so outfielder but no that its a possibilty he may return to boston as the 4th OF... Id love to see him back, he reminds me of Billy Mueller and Varitek, he is the true "dirt dog", he grinds it out, he plays no matter what, he has a great attitude and a great individual in the club house... not to mention how respected he is... Id like to see him back...

If Trot gets arbitration, you can expect him to have either a starting role or a platoon role in the OF. There is no way theo offers arb to him and puts him in their plans as a 4th OFer when he would make at least 5mil next yr due to arb rules. If they sign Drew and re-ink Nixon, expect the sox to 1. deal Manny, and 2. try to deal Wily Mo. This is a direct indication that they have no faith in this kid as a full time player.

If trot accepts arbitration i think the sox will just trade him away during spring training for a draft pick .then pick up some of his contract .I would love to see him get a chance to redeem himself with the redsox but i dont see it happining.

Even if Manny is traded we have:

WMP

Crisp

*Drew

Hinske

*Nixon

Whither Murphy? (Pawtucket we assume, and that's probably OK for a while)

A WMP / Nixon platoon doesn't really make sense because as of last year WMP couldn't hit lefties either (.660 OPS vs. .946 vs RHP). Maybe he fixes that, maybe not, but regardless, all the talk about him has been that he hasn't had the constistency of playing time to develop. So if Nixon accepts, the FO is spending $6.5 million to bring back a character guy who:

1) Can't hit LHP (like both platoon-mate options)

2) Is oft-injured

3) Is a mediocre fielder

4) Will block the development of at least one projectible player (WMP/Murphy)

All, one assumes, in the hope of his turning it down so they get a draft pick. I hope they know something we don't. I like Nixon, everybody does, but unless an OF besides Manny is getting moved (or god forbid Youks with Hinske playing 1B fulltime - shudder), this doesn't make a ton of sense to me. One guy's opinion, per usual.

if he accepts arb, he will be getting at least 5mil. Something that is way over market for a guy who right now looks like he is close to the finish line on his career. The only way he gets dealt for anything substantial is if he returns and has a monster start to the yr. Otherwise, he is an expensive player to have on the bench.

If Nixon comes back its as a 4th OF to play RF or LF, with WMP, Crisp and Drew who can all play LF, RF and CF. That's a versatile OF and if trot playes 1/4 of the time the chances of him getting injured as reduced. They better still get a good 5th OF cause I can easily see 2 injuries out of that crew.

I cant comprehend the fact that Theo thinks that Trot would be a better option than Wily Mo next season. Wily Mo had a better avg, more HRs, almost close to same amount of RBIS as Trot while playing in considerable lower # of games and ABs. Trot this offseason is somehow a Type A free agent, he couldve brought a 1st round pick had a team signed him before now

If Manny is traded, Id expect to see Wily Mo take over in left field-- Coco in center, Drew in right. But I just love your scenario of single hitting injury prone Trot coming back as the starter, even in a platoon Tito will give him out starts like candy

you dont offer trot arbitration with a minimum salary of 5+mil to sit on the bench.

I know what you're saying, and it sounds fine there, but only against RHP, and for $6Mil? Why not just wait on an injury and bring up Murphy? That's one damn expensive part-time 4th OF who is arguably worse than your incumbent 4th OF (Hinske).

If they offer arb I can think of a few situations where it might make sense:

1) they think he's got a better deal in the works and are angling for the pick

2) they think they can package him somewhere this offseason

3) they think a market might open up early next year where they can flip him and $$ for a needed small part

It's too much money for the player on a strictly performance-based rating. I'm stumped.

From the Royals? Nothing, they paid the league minimun salary and the Sox paid the rest.

Yeah Nixon is a hitting machine that is why in 114 G he hit for a 268 AVE 24 doubles 8 HR 52 RBI great numbers. LOL......

I hope Trot gets the offer. He has been a dirt loving hard playing memeber of the team since day one. Loyalty must have a place in this game. He is a throw back to Yaz and Rice....
