Wow, WTF umps. That play has to appealed, how can you cost a guy a perfect game like that? The only thing that could make this worse is if Joe West called him safe.

More media fodder to criticize the umps. MLB is going to have to get their hands dirty with this issue sooner or later.

They need to do something about the umpiring. It's awful. How on Earth can somebody not give even a close play to the guy 1 out from a perfect game? They pretty much ALWAYS give the tie to the defense, despite the rule stating it should go to the base-runner. In my book, he just pitched the 3rd perfect game of the season, I could care less what the actual box score says.

In the end' date=' it doesn't matter. He'll know he pitched a perfect game.[/quote']

But it won't be in the history books.

Absolutely... this is going to raise al sorts of replay discussion and whatnot. I just don't see how he so badly missed that call.

What's interesting though, is if he did get the perfect game is that it would have been the third one not only this season, but within a month. That's pretty crazy to me. Of the 20 PGs in MLB history, until this year there's never been more than one thrown in a single season. The fact that their rightfully should have been 3 this year is just mystifying to me.

Completely false. There are still 20 perfect games in history, not 21. It'll be the one that got away for him.

Agreed, 100%

That's ok, the Guardians still suck

I lied. For some reason I was under the impression that 2 perfectos have never been thrown in the same season (that's what I heard reported I think on either ESPN or MLB Network following Halladay's), but looking at the record books there were 2 thrown in 1880; by Lee Richmond for Worcester (June 12, 1880), and by Monte Ward for Providence (June 17, 1880). Both thrown in the same week. That's crazy I never realized that. So technically in the modern era this is the first year that 2 were thrown in the same season (should be 3).

f***ing unbelievable. Umpires are making a joke of themselves this season. Replay really needs to be expanded from just home run calls. Replays should be used to determine whether a home run was foul or fail and whether or not a player is safe at a base. Nothing more. You can't expect a human being to correctly make a call on something that happens so quickly.

What a bad call! I don't like the Tigers. But damn! What a bad call. Give it to him.

They can protest the call for 48 hours.

MLB can't get involved and overturn a call like that under the current rules unless I'm mistaken.

This is why I've argued for challenge flags in baseball. If I were Galarraga' date=' I'd be bitter about this forever.[/quote']This was a case of an ump feeling compelled to insert himself into a crucial play in a game to determine the outcome. I have seen umps like this over 40 years at all levels of baseball and softball. It's like a compulsion to be noticed.

I am trying to verify another lost perfect game story. I heard a story about an ump that called ball 4 on a check swing in the 9th inning with 2 outs and a full count. If I was the catcher, I'd have turned and punched him.

It's interesting that Talksox members feel strongly about this. Who really cares about the Guardians or Tigers?

Well, the answer is that wherever our loyalties lie, we are baseball fans.

We want to see GOOD baseball. What just happened illustrates how behind the times MLB is.

Baseball is run by a bunch of old rich guys that are out of touch with their market. It's time for some changes. Sell some sizzle. At least try to appear as if the game is legitimate and has some integrity.

How about a challenge flag similar to the NFL?

I think they can' date=' but they just won't.[/quote']

Unless the call changes the outcome of a game i.e. winning and losing, then you can't protest the call. Furthermore, the MLB rulebook seems to say you can't protest judgment calls, only interpretation of the rules.

You can protest error/hit calls and they often don't change the outcome of the game.

I don't care about the Guardians or Tigers, I just care about accuracy. And accuracy and history were dealt a severe blow today.
