I gotta say Ortiz and Olerud should be getting the bulk of playing time at first. NO MORE KEVIN MILLAR!! Please!!!

Even Youk could get some ABs over there. Nothing would make me happier than for the Red Sox to emerge from the All Star break Millar-less.

I think Ortiz should play 1st base ...

I agree. He'll need the practice for the World Series.

This would let other people rest or at least not play defense when they are the DH

im a big fan of kevin millar's. however i am too gettin annoyed he has to hop on the radio when rumors are being tossed around, his playing time, etc. basically trying to act like hes the team's voice... i heard trade rumors of him to the astros, wouldnt mind them getting in return chad qualls a relief pitcher, in 40 games has a nice ERA of 3.95, and with 9 walks/32 strikeouts--i mentioned him moreso cuz he is in last year of his contract

ok i had posted that last week, i got goosebumps now cuz i just saw this in an article in a trading block buzz section:

Do Mets have their eye on Millar?

According to the Providence Journal, the Mets had two scouts at the Red Sox-Orioles series this weekend, heightening speculation that they are looking at Millar. Newsday reported on Sunday that the Red Sox may have a deal in place that would send Millar to the Astros in exchange for reliever Chad Qualls, who has a 3.89 ERA in 41 games this season. ... According to the Globe's Gordon Edes, "Kevin Millar denied an ESPN report that he had asked the Sox for a trade. Millar said that while he would not be surprised at a trade - 'you hear that kind of talk every year at this time'-- he said he had not asked to be dealt. 'Play baseball, ready to go, it's time to roll,' Millar said. 'We're [three] games up. We're not talking about me right now. I didn't say [expletive]. I ain't going to say [expletive], so you guys are searching for something I'm not going to say right now. I'm just enjoying baseball. I'm happy.' On Wednesday's Baseball Tonight show and on Boston radio station WEEI 850 AM on Thursday, ESPN's Peter Gammons said Millar asked to be dealt. An excerpt from Thursday's Gammons interview: "Obviously Millar has a lot to do with this because he's so outraged that John Olerud is here, he's in the manager's office, now he's asked to be traded and all that. Now, c'mon… drama. Grow up and move on. He (Millar) was upset and asked Terry Francona to have him traded. They looked, and it's not happening. Houston I guess is interested a little bit, but they wouldn't give anything and now they don't want him because Berkman's going to play first base. It's not gonna happen."

Francona's loyalty towards Millar really irks me. It really is frustrating to see a better player like Olerud riding the pine so that Millar can routinely hit in to double plays and strike out with the bases loaded. Someone in upper management needs to inform Francona of this blunder. Not saying that Henry or Luchino should tell Tito what to do but I mean when it is something so blatant like this I mean it should be considered.

Francona is a good manager he just has a problem with the loyalty. IT annoys the hell out of me. He has the oppurtunity to make this team much better but will not because he believes a few guys are veterans and have proven themselves in the past as being good. Kevin Millar was OK in 03. He never was really good. IF he was ok in 03, and was worse last year, what does that tell you? Same goes for Embree. Embree has not been good in a long time. The guy pissed me off this year and he sucks worse now. But no, Francona wants to stay with these guys because they played for awhile and were good back in the day. Give me a f***ing break.

More Millar rumblings

The Providence Journal reported Thursday that the Sox have told Kevin Millar the same thing they told Jay Payton when he requested a trade: They will only do it if they can get a deal that will help the team. Millar, who has expressed his unhappiness with the increased playing time of John Olerud, will be a free agent after the season. The Journal wrote that Millar is worried that if he doesn't start regularly at first base he won't have impressive statistics to take into the market this winter. Millar is hitting .264 with four home runs and 32 RBIs in 74 games this season. ... I will always pick Olerud over Millar.

Only a dull manager (sorry Tito) will pick Millar over Olerud!

Hey Kevin, here's a thought. Want more playing time? Try playing better, nobody OWES you anything.

what about ortiz  LOL that guy sucks at 1st base

Actually in interleague he had some really nice picks and stopped Renteria getting his 17th error on the season.

I just want an answer to who you like better to start the bulk of the games at 1rst base. Maybe it's just me but I think Olerud by far is the better player.

I have to say tht Olerude is better hitter and fielder but keep in mind millar has had sum great plays. Plus u have to think about how old Olerude is.

SOME and YOU, god damn newbies.

Olerudes only 36 he just declined quickly. Millar does not make great plays, he makes plays appear great that most normal first basemen make with ease.

IN BASEBALL 36 IS OLD!!!! I mite be a noob to this site but not to the Sox.

I don't know why you'd bring up great plays with Millar. I've seen more from Olerud, and he's been on the bench for just about the first 8 innings of each game, if he even gets to come into the game.

36 is old for baseball. I think thts awsome tht they can play tht old like wells, clemens, franco hes almost 47. But im just saying what harold reynolds said onces you hit 35 your in the twighlight of your career. And we only have Olerud for this year i mean do we want to sign a 37 year old player. (we are the second oldest club in the league)

if you want defense...olerud. if you want offense...olerud. if you want a cheerleader with teased frosted hair...millar

I dont know dude, Olerud is in this offensive slump right now with just 4 hits in his last 32 at bats.

Not anymore ... 2HR and 9RBI in his last 5 games. Whens the last time Millar hit even 1 HR?

Its hard to say if Johnny Helmet was in a slump or not cuase he doesnt play regularly. I think if you gave him enough at-bats....he would hit for a better average and walk more than Millar casue he works almost every at-bat. I originally felt Millar would hit more HRs (maybe not so much anymore).

The biggest problem is Millar is a righty and Olerud is a lefty. I would like to have Olerud hit 5th in the lineup while Nixon is out....but when he is back that lineup may be too much lefty.

hey idiot what about when he picked off jeff suppan off 3rd in the world series...you saying he still sucks :thumbdown ?

Doesn't Ortiz have a history of back problems? I thought that's why the Red Sox weren't as active in trade talks involing Thome as people though, because neither of them would be able to play first, and only one could be the DH?

i feel more comfortable with olerud at 1st and not millar. olerud has a LITTLE more power and consistancy. plus he doesnt strike out that often.

i noticed someone mentioning why he wears his helmet on this thread...for those that dont know, olerud suffered a brain aneurysm in college and began wearing the helmet in the field for added saftey. i heard that the aneurysm was a big reason why he stopped pitching. the danger of getting hit in the head is greater on the mound than it is at 1st(ask clement). he was a stud pitcher at washington state with a 15-0 record his senior year.
