I just thought the same exact thing. You literally only have to go back 3 years to find a worse team. I can see Tomases point of view if you. Don't beleive in Casas Don't believe in Bello Dont' believe in Yoshida Believe the Red Sox will have an insane amount of injuries again. Yes, injuries will happen, but the Sox had an absurd amount of guys on the DL last year. If you believe all that, and there's nothing wrong with it, you're definitely a cup-half-empty kind of guy assuming the worst-case scenario. I certainly think it's possible this team sucks, but I think they have the capacity to be really good and that's my problem with Tomases writing. From a pure talent point of view, it's just insanely wrong.

But how? how can he become a starter? he pitched 17 innings in 2019. It's going to take years to build his arm strength up to handle a starter's load. His being allowed to pitch this year caused Philly to rush him because he had to play in the majors this year and it led to injury practically on day 1. His path to the majors is likely in a bullpen now. Maybe he will be a late-in-life starter like Rich Hill. His Injury actually helps Philly keep him, which is dumb, it almost incentives throwing a guy out there in a capacity to injure himself if it's even a real injury. The Sox should file a grievance here.

no no no, you can't compare him to Ort. There has literally never been a situation like Song before the odds of him having a mlb career were astronomically low. They still might be. I wish I could say something like "people like him never get protected" but I can't because the truth is there has never been a situation just like this before. Peter Abraham backtracked a lot of his comments too by the way for what it's worth, his opinion isn't worth much in my book. I would critique your statement. "leaving WARD unprotected in favor of ORT" was a major blunder. The kid has still yet to pitch more than 20 innings in pro ball, above A ball. We are getting hung up over scouting reports that are 4 years old. The odds of him being the same game are slim.

There’s a big difference between a guy who never stepped away from the game rehabbing and injury and someone who hasn’t pitched in 4 years. Wait! Can’t piss of Red, and forget about his 17 innings in 2019z If anything, his injury is proof of this, or at least may be. Phillie rushed him, he’s missed several years of not just developing his pitches but ramping his innings up. Whitlock had 205 innings to Songs 17 19 or whatever it is? Plus he never stepped away from pitching coaches and MLB trainers. They’re not the same.

I think it's just being delayed at this point. If you're not ready to add someone to the 40-man who doesn't need to be added yet then why DFA him when you can wait? Ort's 9 lives are close to being up. It feels like he's the 40th man on the 40 man roster right now.

I don't think we ever see this exact roster. I think they find a way to keep Bello on this roster with full health in the pitching staff. Maybe he finds his way down to the minors for a couple of weeks but if he's still there by the time Mondesi is back something horribly went wrong.

I don’t think we can compare their injuries and the treatments they receive. It’s always optimal to avoid major surgery if possible. Not all injuries are created equally so neither is the treatment. I know I don’t have the medical competency to say the same thing….but with that said, I too am a little more optimistic on Sale returning more value than Story this year.

Yup, I had forgotten about that. Still, leaving Ward unprotected is easily a bad decision.

No he wasn't, he was traded for in November, and the Rule 5 draft was in December.

I think that's 100% a hindsight opinion, because people who fit Orts description become really good players. Not all the time, and often they do not, and sometimes become something in-between. Look at a guy like Andrew Miller who looked like garbage until his 6th or 7th year in the majors. If we were talking about age 21-25 Andrew Miller on our 40 man right now what would the narrative be in here? On paper, he would be looking worse than Ort is right now. Just because it might be the right decision to DFA order today, doesn't mean we can go back retroactively and say he never should have been protected. At one point he showed more promise than he is today. And he still might become a big leaguer one day, I just don't think it's going to be in Boston.

I forget how long it was, but it felt like he was on the 40 man for only two weeks, I'm sure maybe it was longer but I know it was brief. I think the Rule 5 was mismanaged, leaving Ward unprotected was an obvious mistake. Politi and Song there's nothing you really could have done, but Ward shouldn't have been exposed.

Well, you know how relief pitching goes. Some guys can never put it together, and others tweak a thing or two and become shutdown relief pitchers. Another teams trash becomes another teams treasure, it's not un justified carrying Ort until now BUT there's a very strong argument that it may be time to move on now.

There were others too, wasn't there that SS who they literally just added to the 40 man a week earlier, traded for actually, only to remove him shortly after the rule 5.

Well I don't think we should assume if we DFA'd Ort back then that today we'd be DFAing Ward. I feel that may be a false premise, besides the fact that he was picked up with the #1 pick should tell us that if anything we would be trading him not DFAing him.

I suppose you could argue that in hindsight, but the fact that he was taken #1 overall tells you had had trade value, and the Sox let him slip away for nothing. So yes, it was a mistake.

This is honestly the best outcome for the Sox. Now they don't have to burn a 40-man spot to keep Alfaro as a depth option. Right?

It's still spring training, and it's true that he has stuff. It's an amorphous process, it's not like there's a clear definitive point in time where if you don't let that player go it means XYZ, Ort is almost certainly the next guy in line to be DFA'd and he just may be. Who knows maybe they still think they can fix something in him, guys who throw 100 don't grow up trees. But if it is time for him to go, what's the difference between last week and later this week at this point? We can play the hindsight game and say they should have DFA'd and added Ward to the 40 man but what is done is done. If it IS that time, that move won't be made until they actually are ready to make a transaction where they need his spot. Which may come any day now.
