On paper, the Yankees seem much improved from last year. The addition of Soto ( and to a lesser extent Verdugo) corrects a major imbalance in their lineup. The question is: Can they all stay healthy or will injuries be their downfall ? Their history indicates that it will again be a big problem in the Bronx. -
Sale is a great pitcher .Grissom is an unproven prospect who may or may not ever amount to anything.. He was considered expendable by the Braves. However, the trade saved the Sox money. And that is the name of the game.

Gambling often becomes an addiction, a sickness. Look at the NCAA tournament. You have people betting their paycheck on a game of hoops , played by a bunch of kids they never heard of , with a point spread they don't even understand. It's crazy.

Ohtani has become one of the faces of MLB , both here and on an international level. They will try to ignore or cover this up and hope it goes away.

Pretty sure that MLB has no desire to look too deeply into the Ohtani situation.

It's not complicated. Players think they deserve more money. Owners want to keep the payroll down in order to increase their profits. It's the usual labor/management business , but perhaps on a bigger scale.

Once again we are hearing some noise about the pitch clock contributing to pitcher's injuries. Nick Pivetta ( Sox union rep) doing some complaining about it too.

That's Talk Sox for you. You can get an argument about almost anything. If I said the sky is blue, someone would come with an explanation why that is not true. -

1- Orioles. Obvious choice. Look like a legit championship contender unless the young players stumble , which is always possible. 2- Yankees. Strong team on paper. But injuries could derail their season . And they are definitely injury prone. 3- Red Sox. Will surprise. Should score plenty of runs. Improved defense will benefit the questionable pitching. Playoff spot possible. 4 - Rays. Due for a fall. The Sox should pass them at some point this season. Their MVP is the manager, Kevin Cash, arguably the best in the game. 5 - Blue Jays. Not impressed with them. Poorly balanced lineup fails to live up to expectations again. -
That is ninth in the A.L. , not MLB.

I think it is legitimate to ask why the Red Sox , who seem to be forever in need of starting pitchers, don't draft more highly rated college pitchers. I don't think the old bromide of " draft the best player available " is a sufficient reason. Of course, high schoolers are usually cheaper, but certainly not as tested as the college athletes. It is a little dubious to call a high school kid the best player available.

If you consistently finish in the basement, you should be able to improve your farm system with the better draft picks. At least that is what it's meant to do. But I would take all of the " official " farm system rankings with the proverbial grain of salt.

Obviously, things do not look too good, on paper or on the field. The best hope is simply that it is baseball. There is plenty of luck and randomness in the sport. There are always players and teams that exceed expectations. The Sox do have some talent. It's not a terrible team. Maintaining health will be important, as it will be for the competition as well. One good thing is that the relatively easy early schedule could result in getting off to a good start. That could help build a winning attitude , confidence and momentum. That being said, I would not advise betting the farm on the Sox winning the division.

Glass half full: This injury will give " Gio " more time to get over his divorce. Maybe find somebody new. Might help his pitching going forward.

That is about as soft an early schedule as you could possibly hope to get. The Sox need to capitalize on it and get off to a good start. That would get the fans more enthusiastic.

The word on Whitlock is that he worked on strength training and bulked up in the off season, in hopes of staying healthy this year. Maybe add a little velocity as well.

Breslow had twenty of his analysts in a hotel for a two week meeting on pitching. After much discussion, breakout groups, flip charts , brainstorming and power point presentations ; they came to the groundbreaking and revolutionary conclusion that velocity was important. ( Of course, Timmy from Little League days could have told them that.). Next month's topic: Does movement on a pitch make it tougher to hit ?

Well, we do now. That's for sure. But we wasted 18 pages of posts on the fantasy of signing Chapman and moving Devers off third. It was never going to happen.
