Bingo. A plain, straightforward, common sense statement. No ifs, ands, buts , maybes, might haves, could be's or what ifs. No gobbledygook. Just the plain truth.
Saves and blown saves is an indication of games won and games lost. That is what matters the most. ERA is a gauge of effectiveness. I honestly don't know what fWAR . is. Nor do I care. But if you can save fewer games and blow more saves and have a higher ERA, and still wind up with a better fWAR , then I would have to question it's worth.
Sox relief pitching: 2018- 46 saves. 20 blown saves. 2019: 33 saves. 31 blown saves. From a plus 26 to a plus 2. As usual, I will supply the facts. You will supply the spin and the " context" (aka excuses)
The Commissioner's office has just authorized me to make the following shocking announcement. Who starts the game thread has absolutely nothing to do with the outcome of the game. I know that is hard to believe , but it comes straight from the top.
People can have their own opinions. Their own beliefs. Their own ideologies. Their own preferences. Their own sources of information. And their own ideas of how to build a baseball team. But they should never let that replace what is the actual reality. And that often is what happens. Call it " context" , " spin" or whatever. But it does not change the reality. You can have a doctorate in physics or you can be a fourth grade arithmetic student, but two and two still makes four. And Chris Sale is a great pitcher, albeit an often injured one. Grissom is young , but is still an unproven prospect/suspect who is not close to being in Sale's league. And that is a reality.
Folks who thought the Sale for Grissom trade was a good deal are not about to admit that they were wrong. That is just how it is. That's the way the world works.
Dombrowski made one mistake in 2019. That was to neglect the bullpen. That, coupled with injury and underperformance from the rotation , sunk the season. The starting lineup was very good. You should not omit that the Sox were coming off of three straight division titles, something they have not done before or since. Dombrowski had a great run.
Very few fans who like to quote WAR actually know the secret recipe. Like, how in the world did Joey B. get a 2.5 and Jimmy D. only got a 2.3 ? And here I thought Jimmy was having a better year. Just goes to show you how little we know.
It is up to Grissom to earn his keep. You can't play him just to try and justify the Sale trade. Right now, other guys are playing very well. And please stop with the talk of trading Jansen , or even being sellers at all. This team is starting to play really good baseball.
How do they calculate WAR for these old time players ? Analytics were not in use. And there is limited film footage of the games. Do they just take the often mocked " baseball card stats " and convert them into a WAR figure? How ? As for the " Say Hey Kid" , I was lucky enough to see him play at the old Polo Grounds in New York. A real treat. R.I.P.
It wasn't long ago that the analytics folks were saying that stolen bases were overrated and not worth the risk. I guess they will admit they were wrong .
Just on the face of it, the trade was kind of strange. You trade a pitcher who has been among the best for a middle of the road prospect who the Braves didn't see in their future. Then you still pay half of his salary. Meanwhile, you have Story , with Mayer and Yorke waiting in the wings. Seems like the most obvious reason was to save some money.
Red, I don't know what to say about the Sox. They can't get anything going. But no worries about the Celtics. Just a bad game. It will be sweeter to win it at home anyway.
The Sox got slapped around by the Yankees last night. They are now 14 games behind them. They continue to play poor fundamental baseball. Screw up a simple rundown play. Can't catch an easy toss to first, etc. Yet we still have people saying they are " fun to watch." We have a twisted sense of what is fun.
