  1. Very favorable pitching matchup today. Houck, at least at this point, is the Sox best starter. We don't hear any more complaining that he can't go three times through the batting order. Should be able to put this one in the win column.
  2. I wonder if they will be able to sign Soto. Steinbrenner is starting to sound like John Henry in saying what a burden the payroll is becoming.
  3. Saying " The future looks bright" wears pretty thin after a while.
  4. Meanwhile, back in The Bronx, the Yankee lineup is looking like a wrecking machine.
  5. Essentially, they have been beating the bad teams and losing to the good ones. But you can hang around the wild card picture just by doing that.
  6. The thing I remember most about Oscar Gamble is the way that Yankee announcer Bob Sheppard said his name.
  7. Patience is a virtue. Let's give him a little more time to show what he can do. But at some point, he has to figure it out or someone else will take his spot. You can't keep making excuses for him indefinitely just to try and justify the trade.
  8. Al had a rubber arm. They even named the rubber ball after him.
  9. Schiraldi gave up three straight clean singles. With any luck , one of them would have been at somebody and been caught. He would have been a hero. That's baseball. A lot of randomness and luck involved.
  10. Despite having only a very brief stint in the majors, this pedo is referred to as " former Red Sox pitcher" Austin Maddox.
  11. It is not physically possible for a baseball thrown overhand or three quarters to rise as it nears the plate. However, there have been a few pitchers whose fastball at least gave the illusion of rising, making it harder to hit. I remember Eck, when he was in the booth, having an interesting discussion on this a few years ago.
  12. Today's athletes are bigger, stronger and faster. But not necessarily greater. Muhammad Ali would make Tyson Fury look like a buffoon before knocking him cold. And Koufax is an all time great.
  13. If you liked the Sale for Grissom trade when it happened, your only sensible position now is to say " let's wait a while before passing judgement." You can't possibly say that it is working out well so far. Not if you want to keep an ounce of credibility.
  14. Story is that guy in the shop/office who does a pretty good job when he shows up. But he calls in sick all the time. Yoshida would be an expensive utility guy unless he shows that he should be a regular. His contract is what it is. It doesn't entitle him to play ahead of someone better.
  15. The most logical lineup would be Devers at third, Mayer at short, Story at second and Casas at first. Look for a right-hand power bat for D.H.
  16. We will just have to see how the Sale trade plays out in the future. As of now, I think the general feeling around baseball is that the Sox were fleeced.
  17. Bard had a great arm. Psychological problems derailed his career.
  18. If you thought Sale for Grissom was a good trade for Boston, it's okay to say " I was wrong about that."
  19. Stephen Curry occasionally will post satirical suggestions . He has a unique sense of humor. Trading Duran would be beyond stupid at this point. I know it, Stephen Curry knows it and Breslow knows it. Anyone who has been paying attention knows it.
  20. Regrettably, runs scored is not cumulative. Each game is a separate contest.
  21. Anywhere you live has its advantages and its drawbacks. The people I know who have moved to Florida have no desire to come back.
  22. It's true that he was healthier and more effective in 2021 when he strictly relieved. I just don't know if that is enough to go by. He just might be a guy who has trouble staying healthy.
  23. Starters pitch more innings, but they also get more rest. Relievers pitch in more games and have fewer days off. Anyway, I am not so sure that Whitlock would continue to be healthier as a reliever.
  24. That might be. I really have no idea what the numbers are on that. And I positively do not want to research it.
  25. Seems to me that some starters get hurt and some don't. Some relievers get hurt and some don't. Right now, it seems many starters and many relievers are getting hurt.
