  1. I don't know that there is any valid reason that a pitcher would stay healthier as a reliever than as a starter. I think it is more a matter of genetics, physical condition, pitching style and just plain luck.
  2. The Mookie Betts trade will live in infamy forever. Hard to compare anything else to it. As for the Sale trade, we should probably wait a while longer to fully evaluate it. But if you told the average fan that the Sox had just traded Chris Sale for Vaughn Grissom, the response would be," Are you kidding me? You can't be serious."
  3. The season is not toast. Winning the Division is certainly in the realm of the unrealistic. But with three wild card slots up for grabs, you can stay in contention just by hanging around .500.
  4. I would actually rather stick with Dalbec ,and see if he can figure it out, than go with these career ham and eggers.
  5. MLB is big business. They are in it for the money. But that's life. You work for your money , and other people want you to give it to them. MLB may find out that folks are not so willing or able to give any more of their money to them.
  6. Yeah. I think we are getting off track. Talking about two different things here. I would rather go by Dever's track record as a hitter rather than a few at bats in the first seven weeks of the season. I don't think he has reached the declining phase of his career by any means.
  7. The last three seasons of a player with a long career may just reflect the aging process and a decline in performance. But that is not the same as saying that a guy is a good hitter but can't hit with runners in scoring position. Especially over less than two months of the season.
  8. I think the runners in scoring position thing is just coincidental. I don't put much stock in it. I have more faith in career stats than any small snippets like that.
  9. Might be worth a shot. Baumann is a better pitcher than the run of the mill DFA.
  10. The Yankees are looking awfully good right now. Kind of like Bruno back in the day. I agree that the Orioles look like their only threat in the A.L.East.
  11. Some of the anger at Devers is that he is not Mookie. That is really too much to expect and not really fair. He is still the best player on this club.
  12. Any team , especially a team playing half it's games in Fenway would love a couple of right-handed power bats in the lineup. However, I think it is wise to have a few good left- handed bats in there . Baseball is made to order for left hand hitters. I would be fine with adding Mayer to a group of Devers, Casas, Duran and possibly Abreu.
  13. I think Rafaela has a lot to prove before he can be seen as a rising star. His defense has drawn raves, but the fact is that he has already committed eight errors. You can't just ignore that. Offensively, he is struggling to keep his average above the dreaded Mendoza line. He is young and has potential , but he certainly has a long way to go to achieve that potential.
  14. Presumably, Mayer will be the shortstop in the very near future. Story would move to second . At least I think that is the plan.
  15. We will have to wait a while to fully assess the Sale for Grissom deal. But just on the face of it, trading a Chris Sale for a Vaughn Grissom, while still paying half of Sale's salary, seems like the work of a madman.
  16. I think one of the best things Breslow did in the off season was to not trade Duran. The many trade suggestions on this forum were ill advised. Other than Devers (and possibly Casas) Duran is key to the success of this club. And he is still young and still improving.
  17. I can't kill Breslow for the Cooper and Smith acquisitions. They were reasonable stopgap signings. They are nothing special, but better hitters than they have shown so far.
  18. I'll bite. Dombrowski is an experienced executive and a proven winner. It's not fair to compare a guy just starting out with that. Breslow deserves some time to grow into the job. He certainly seems to know the pitching part of the game. As for Bloom, he simply was not ready for prime time and was an unforced error by Henry.
  19. Yoshida may be a bit of a disappointment on the field, but he is not crazy.
  20. Yoshida turns 31 this July. He is not a kid. That may be part of the reason other teams were not very interested.
  21. 40% into the season and still haven't played the arch rival Yankees. What idiot makes up these schedules ?
  22. It's two different sports. Hockey games are much lower scoring , closer and harder to predict. Often one or two key plays decides the outcome. Baseball is somewhat similar in that regard. Of course, one or two key plays can decide a basketball game as well, but maybe not as often.
  23. The Celtics are clearly the best team in the NBA. If they play the way they can, they win it all. The Bruins are a very good team that has a chance, but they are not the best in the NHL.
  24. I would give much of the credit for the Ray's success to the manager, Kevin Cash. He gets the best out of whatever he has to work with.
  25. It's only May 11th. It hasn't even gotten warm yet. And there have been a dozen mood swings so far. Today, it's gloom and doom. But if they win today, it will be seashells and balloons, scoreboard watching and updated, color-coded wild card standings. Folks, you have to let things play out a little. You can't live and die with every game. It's baseball.
