    No matter how good or bad the overall quality of the league is, you can be one of the best or one of the worst. Or you can kind of be in the middle, which is where the Sox seem to have settled.

    I was at a game at Yankee Stadium many years ago. They gave all the fans one of those old IBM punch cards with the players names. You were supposed to push the tabs for your All Star Game selections and drop it off in a barrel on your way out. When I dropped mine in the barrel, I saw thousands of cards . They were wrinkled, folded , spindled ,mutilated , beer soaked , mustard covered and crumpled , with hanging chads everywhere. There was no way those cards were ever counted , either by machine or by hand. That was my first lesson in becoming cynical.

    If John Henry doesn't care if Phillies fans take over Fenway, then I will dislike him even more than I do now.

    It will be interesting to see how much of tonight's crowd are Phillies fans. I expect there will be a lot of them in attendance.

    Of course D.H.s can get injured. Players get injured playing on offense as well as on defense. Don't know which happens more often, but obviously a guy who plays both is more likely to get hurt. Not something that is even debatable.

    The Red Sox have a great history. No doubt. But that makes it more aggravating that they have allowed this to happen. Meanwhile, Phillies fans are having a blast. They are not concerned about what happened years ago.

    The Yankees made a serious effort to improve their team. And it shows. The Sox have not made a serious effort to improve their team. And it shows.

    On base and slugging percentages have been around a long time.. They are easy to figure out. I don't know that it was necessary to add them together to create a new stat, but it is easy to do. Personally, I don't know of anyone who would take the time to try to compute a player's fWAR. And if they did, would it match with what the website puts out ?

    OPS is a real thing . fWAR is not. Does the average baseball fan know how to compute fWAR ? Is there a mathematical formula that determines one guy is a 1.8 and another guy is a 1.6 ? It is just some guy's invention. A mystery to most fans. And not something that effects their All Star voting.

    John Henry is not a baseball guy. He can't evaluate ballplayers. That is the G.M.s job. Henry just has to sign the checks. Lately he has become reluctant to do so.

    John Henry made his fortune in hedge funds. I don't know much about that world, but maybe that is how they operate.

    I always liked Christian Vazquez. He is a good, solid catcher from the Molina school of catching. Always known as a really good teammate. He also is a winner. A guy who is an asset to his team. I think his teammates and fans were more upset about the way his trade was handled than they were about the actual deal.

    The Dodgers and the Yankees just completed a three game series in The Bronx. Three huge, sellout crowds. Plenty of excitement. World Series atmosphere. Star power galore. National TV. That is where we used to be. That is what we are missing. That is what we want to get back to. We don't want to hear that our expectations are unrealistic. We don't want an annual " wait 'til next year." Or that the future is bright because we have three kids who are doing pretty well in AA Ball. Two months into the season, we don't want the main topic of conversation to be " who can we sell off at the deadline ?" What we do want is an ownership and management team that is doing everything it can to get this team back to where it was six years ago. The Boston Red Sox are one of the most valuable franchises in MLB. Not some small market, small time Charlies. They need to start acting like it again. The expectations should be high.

    A big market, big time team with plenty of revenue , a storied history and a huge fan base should never, ever decide they want to emulate the Tampa Bay Rays . Tampa Bay North indeed. Worst idea in a very long time.

    The expanded playoffs give the opportunity for a wild card that makes teams hesitant about selling at the deadline. If the season ended today, the Padres, who are a game under .500, would be in. Kind of ridiculous, but that is how it is.

    I would be happy to see him sell the team, but I don't think he has any intention of doing so.

    Red Sox fans, and baseball fans in general, are a fickle, entitled bunch. If a player, manager, executive or owner falters, they take it personally and turn on the supposed culprit. DFA this guy, fire that guy, he sucks and so forth. It's just the way fans are. That being said, at some point John Henry made a conscious decision that he was spending too much on the team and he was looking to cut the spending. And he did it. The results kind of speak for themselves. It has not been very good. Now, he emerges from hiding and is displaying an attitude toward the fans who are spending their money on his ballclub. It is not a good look and not good business.

    The incident with the coach. He was upset about the batter bunting or something like that.

    He kind of snapped the other night for no apparent reason. You never know what is bothering people. Last week, a PGA golfer took his own life. Hope Martin gets whatever help he needs.

    The White Sox have a total of only 15 wins so far this season. They might be one of the worst teams in a long time.

    The Braves have quietly fallen seven games behind Philly in the NL East.
