  1. Not out of the realm of possibility by any means.
  2. The tragic number remains at three and holding. The Sox cannot be eliminated tonight.
  3. The A.L. Central wild card contenders benefit from playing the White Sox in another way as well. In case of a tie, the second tiebreaker is record within your own division. Thus, if the Red Sox and Twins finished with the same record, the Twins would get the wild card because the head to head record was 3-3 and the Twins had a better intradivision record.
  4. Just for information: There are no longer any play-in games. Tiebreakers are used. I believe the Sox win the tiebreaker with the Royals and Mariners, but lose it with the Tigers and Twins.
  5. The tragic number is now down to three. So, the Sox cannot be eliminated tonight.
  6. OPS is okay to give you an idea of a hitter's overall productivity. But it is not a real thing. It's something someone conceived of by adding two different stats together and taking the sum total. There is a redundancy in giving credit twice for one thing. And regardless of whether you prefer On base percentage or slugging percentage, there is no chance that these two different stats are exactly equal in value.
  7. Bob Gibson, Tom Seaver, Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman ?
  8. There are situations where you need to put the ball in play. Nothing good comes from a strikeout.
  9. Was it the late Marge Schott who said, " Why do I pay scouts? All they do is watch games".
  10. A win is a win, but this one was not very impressive. N.D. does not resemble a top team.
  11. After last night's snooze fest, the tragic number is down to four. Never give up.
  12. Every organization, every large company has some deadwood, some unproductive people. Maybe that's what Breslow found here. Or maybe he just wants to put some of his own cronies in there. Who knows ?
  13. Harm, Do the environmental factors have anything to do with the potential tying run getting picked off third base with one out in the tenth inning ?
  14. Mathematically in it. The tragic number for the Sox is now six.
  15. There is talk of Ohtani possibly pitching in the post season.
  16. By rule, somebody has to win the third wildcard in the A.L. No matter how hard they try not to, it has to happen for one team.
  17. I think the Sox have the best team of all the teams in the mix for the third wild card. Obviously, it has reached the point where they not only have to play well but get a little help also. It's not out of the question.
  18. Fenway is a special place. Flawed in more ways than one, but still special.
  19. They should try to get one of the young, 100 mph fireballers. There are several of them, with more coming along. They might well burn out after a couple of years, but can be very effective until then.
  20. Doesn't take much to leapfrog teams that are just laying there. None of them are very good.
  21. Yes. That's life. Plus, it's not fair to the teams who have earned a spot in the playoffs .
  22. The third wild card rule is ridiculous. Having a sub .500 team be in contention with a week to go should be an embarrassment to MLB. But the Lords of Baseball are immune to embarrassment so long as the money is rolling in.
  23. If there are two outs on two pitches, a lot of hitters will not swing at the first pitch. Doesn't make much sense, but it seems they would rather take a strike in that situation.
  24. I don't think you can have one size fits all. Some guys would be good to go every game, while others would benefit from an occasional day off.
